From the timing of bursts, longitudinal calculation or just to simply reassure how long something stayed on the air, watches, chronographs, stopwatches and timekeeping in general have been an integral part of aviation. Literally from day 1 , I'd even dare say day 0, the Wright brother used American made packet watches and stopwatches to measure air time (Slide 2), they were vital, though indirectly, to understand and apply the engineering changes that were needed to arrive at the 1903 Wright flyer. A while later, Alberto Santos Dumont (slide 3) asked his friend Louis Cartier for a watch he could wear while on flight, giving us, essentially, the first tool wristwatch, and some would argue the first "mass production" watch. About two and a half decades after the Wrights first flight, Longines helped Lindberg navigate towards Paris in his famous Spirit of St. Louis flight, In warfare the pilots of WWII saw wristwatches as a vital tool and part of their uniform, timing missions , and fuel consumption. The jet age gave us the modern chronograph, Navitmers, Type XX (a bit earlier but still), and I'm sure some pre-moon Speedmasters and Heuers were used by civilian and military pilots. The spec race arrives, only 56 years after the Wright brothers, and watches are there the Sturmanskie, Pobeda, Heuer, Bulova and of course Omega (Slides 4 and 5), making instruments, helping astronauts time bursts, land on the moon and return safely to earth! Fast forward to today and still watches are a vital part of aviation, the GMT a useful tool for the Jetsetter, and pilot, the g shock a tool for military pilots and astronauts, Omega still being the only EVA certified watch by NASA, IWC innovating inmaterial so fighter pilots can time fuel runs and turns precisely while not feeling anything on their wrists, and Breitling still using their aviation heritage as iconic design. Finally made it to the #nationalairandspacemuseum here in DC, which was partly fabulous but also a bit disappointing. Fabulous was the timeline for the Mercury 7 and seeing how completely tiny those first space capsules were - basically the size of a fridge with what looks like the plumbing of an entire kitchen on the inside. Astronauts must have been yogi’s as they would have had to fold themselves in 4 to fit, not mentioning the claustrophobia or fear as it shook, rattled and rolled towards the complete unknown. And the courage required to eat the early food - looked like dried old fashioned cat food. There was the “Houston we’ve had a problem” (now a misquoted bit of vernacular) square peg into round hole issue of Apollo 13, which is amazing to see. All sorts of other great and instructive things on show, with lots to read and learn. Disappointing was how much space was given over to merch…probably made worse by the fact the only t shirt I wanted (last pic) only went up to 5 years! Was actually cross that my hero #chuckyeager the man who broke the sound barrier in 1947 featured nowhere. At the time there was 0 idea of what would happen going faster than the speed of sound. Cannot begin to comprehend! The museum has done a brilliant job on diversity and featured another hero of mine #jackiecochran who by the time she died in 1980 held more speed, altitude and distance records than any other pilot, male or female. My gripe is that they downplay how insanely hard/impossible it was for women pilots, astronauts, scientists and support crews (and let’s not mention anyone who was not white) to do what they did when they did it #lestweforget And for me no Chuck is almost unforgivable. But glad I went ✈️🌍🪐🌒🚀🛰️☄️👩🚀👩🚀👩🚀

DC is my favourite US city period, Even though it has much to be critical about, mostly the politicians and some politics (both sides guys), to me it never detracts from its majesty, sobriety and fun. A city brimming with history, not only from it's monuments and artifacts housed there, but of course the things she has lived in the last two centuries, both good and bad, from I have a dream to Jan 6th, she's been witness and protagonist to everything. To me DC is a place of first steps, literally, in a family visit, DC is where I learned to walk, and figuratively, without the NMNH I wouldn't be interested in science, and without the Air and Space museum this page wouldn't exist! The Certina and the Lunar Pilot proved to be amazing companions in the museums, for the NMNH the DSPH200M a talisman for adventure, discovery and the passage of deep time, space and the natural world, while the Bulova proved to be a reminder of not only my grail and favourite watch, the Speedmaster, and reminder of how close the hobby is linked to aviation and the progress of technology, and final frontiers of exploration!!! My family and I drove through the night and stay up to watch the final shuttle landing at Kennedy Space Center. It was an experience I will always treasure with my mom and sister. スミソニアン航空宇宙博物館に最後に来たのは1996年と思われる。およそ28年ぶり。前の記憶があまり無いが館内に本物の月着陸船がいきなり置いてあり驚愕したのを覚えている。展示数もかなり多く早歩きでみても2−3時間はかかる印象だった。今回の印象はだいぶ展示数が減ってしまったように思える。サラッと見るだけなら実質1時間もあれば十分。 有名なApollo11では無くApollo17の月面の足跡とか好き。 #SmithsonianMuseum #nationalairandspacemuseum #washingtondc #20240318

National Museum of Natural History. So many exhibits from dinosaurs, oceans, animals, and gems. Very informative and i live the way they display the dinosaurs and animals. National Air and Space Museum was also a huge museum. They have great exhibits from the history of aircraft to outer space. So many fantastic real exhibits. 【Washington D.C】 Itinerary ワシントンへ3日間の旅。綺麗でコンパクトな街は、お散歩にもとても良い場所でした。徒歩でも十分でした◎ 【旅程】 Day1_ 到着日 ホテルにチェックイン後、ワシントン記念塔へ。記念塔のチケット予約はすぐにソールドアウトになるそうなのでお気をつけください!! 私達は記念塔には登らず、付近の桜並木等を散歩しました。海水とカモメと桜が日本では見られない光景ですね🌸 Day2_ スミソニアンインスティテュート 航空宇宙博物館と自然史博物館をメインに鑑賞しました!! これらの入場料は全て無料!! 規模の大きさと迫力に大満足です。前者は予約必須なのでお忘れ無く。どちらもワクワクする展示方法で飽きませんでした!! ちなみに...入場料無料なのに最寄駅の近くでチケットを販売している人達がいました😅 Day3_ホワイトハウス 午前中はホワイトハウス周辺を散歩し、午後は帰路のため空港へ。あの有名なホワイトハウス!! 想像よりも白かったです。空港も広々、明るく綺麗◎ ワシントンD.C.は清潔感もあってとてもよかったです、また行きたい😊 春の時期は桜も綺麗でオススメ!! 花粉が飛んでいるので花粉症の方は対策をお忘れ無く🤧 Three-day trip to Washington, D.C. The beautiful and compact city was a great place for a stroll. I was able to get around on foot. Day1_ Arrival day After checking in at the hotel, we went to the Washington Monument. We did not climb the monument, but took a walk along the cherry trees nearby. The seawater, seagulls, and cherry blossoms are a sight you can't see in Japan 🌸. Day2_ Smithsonian Institute We mainly visited the Air and Space Museum and the Natural History Museum! All these admission fees are free! We were very satisfied with the scale and power of the museum. Don't forget that reservations are required for the former. We were never bored with the exciting exhibits in both museums! By the way... There were people selling tickets near the nearest station even though admission is free😅. Day3_White House In the morning, we took a walk around the White House, and in the afternoon, we went to the airport for our way home. The famous White House! It was whiter than I imagined. The airport is also spacious, bright and clean. Washington D.C. was clean and very nice, I would like to go back 😊 I recommend spring time because of the beautiful cherry blossoms!
