Although a doctor may offer cosmetic, plastic, or aesthetic surgery, he or she may not be board-certified to perform that type of surgery. As matter of fact, there's no board certification for "Cosmetic Surgery." The person could be a gynecologist, pediatrician, or dermatologist with no training in plastic surgery whatsoever. Scary, huh? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Board-certified” means the doctor has gone through very specific and extensive training in a specialized field and has passed multiple difficult examinations administered by a board of experts in that field. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You may hear those who are certified as plastic surgeons say, "why would you go to anyone but a board-certified plastic surgeon?" They’re right, why would you? Would you want your cosmetic corrective surgery performed by someone who has never had any formal plastic surgery training? And that’s the issue; "cosmetic" surgeons may not have the training which is why the certification is so important. #CyprisFacts: A recent study published in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery involved 24 men. The patients had an average age of 49 and paid for their own cosmetic surgery. ⠀ The procedures featured in the study included upper eyelid lifts, lower eyelids reductions, face-lifts, brow-lifts, neck-lifts, nose reshaping, and chin implants. ⠀ Participants consented to their before and after photos being shown to 145 strangers who would review their personality traits. The respondents were aged between 25 and 34 years old, and were asked to rate how attractive, aggressive, extroverted, likable, risk-seeking, sociable, masculine and trustworthy the men seemed—but didn't know the purpose of the study to avoid bias. ⠀ The results revealed that face surgery overall appeared to make the men more attractive, likable, more trustworthy, and have better social skills. ⠀ More specifically, upper eyelid was linked with increased likability and trustworthiness; lower eyelid surgery made men appear less likely to take risks; while brow lifts made the patients seem more extroverted and inclined towards risks. A face-lift made them look more likable and trustworthy, according to the respondents, and a neck-lift more extroverted and masculine. The nose improved their attractiveness. It's derived from the term plastikos, which means to mold or shape something. This was when German doctor Carl Ferdinand von Graefe coined it to describe the process of doctors who molded or reshaped body tissues. Although it was not called plastic surgery at the time, the first instance of it can be traced back to the year 2000 B.C. At that time, people in India could have their nose cut off as punishment for a crime or during an act of war.
