Few pitchers are regarded for their hitting talents and Giants legend Gaylord Perry was no exception. One day while watching Perry haphazardly swing his way through batting practice, Giants manager Alvin Dark lamented, “They’ll put a man on the moon before he hits a home run.“ At 1:17 pm PST on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to land on the moon. Minutes later at Candlestick Park, Gaylord Perry hit his first major league home run off the lefty Claude Osteen —and pitched all 9 innings—to lead the Giants in a 7-4 victory against the Dodgers. #GIANTleapformankind #otd
