MARY READ PIRATE DIED OTD 1721. Fierce and famous pirate. Spent her childhood disguised as a boy to gain a legacy, then later worked as foot-boy and on a ship. Fought against the French, but fell in love and married a Flemish soldier. Bought an inn ‘The Three Horseshoes’ in The Netherlands, but when her husband died she ran away to sea and became a pirate. Her partners, and not just in crime, were Anne Bonney and Calico Jack Rackham. They stole a sloop in Bermuda but were attacked by Pirate hunter Captain Jonathan Barnet in the middle of a rum party off the coast of Jamaica. Taken by surprise and too drunk to fight, the pirates fled to the hold, leaving the women to fight the boarding party. When the men would not come up and fight, Mary Read angrily shot into the hold, killing one, and wounding others. The women were eventually overcome and surrendered. Brought to trial in Jamaica and sentenced to hang for acts of piracy, but Mary Read and Anne Bonny ‘plead the belly’ (pregnancy) and are given a stay of execution. The women were at least as fierce as the men. Anne Bonny told Calico Jack, on his way to the gallows, that if he had fought like a man, he wouldn’t be there. Also, to be fair, if he had been able to ‘plead the belly’… Mary Read dies of a fever in Spanish Town prison, Jamaica. Last year, statues of the two women were unveiled at Execution Dock, Wapping. The pirates appear to be lovers. Planning permission was refused and a new site was found on Burgh Island, south Devon coast. Permission refused again. Seems nobody loves a pirate.

On This Date In 2000: Shortly after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961, a top CIA official told an investigative commission that Russia had somehow learned the exact date of the amphibious landing in advance, according to a newly declassified version of the commission’s final report. Moreover, the CIA apparently had known of the leak to the Soviets-and went ahead with the invasion anyway. In an effort to oust Fidel Castro, the CIA organized and trained a force of about 1,400 Cuban exiles and launched the invasion on April 17, 1961. Castro’s soldiers easily repelled the landing force in less than 72 hours, killing 200 rebels and capturing 1,197 others in what became one of the worst foreign policy blunders of the Cold War. The investigative commission, chaired by General Maxwell Taylor, was established almost immediately and held a series of secret hearings at the Pentagon before sending a sharply critical report to JFK in June 1961. While portions of the Taylor Commission’s report were made public on two previous occasions, in 1977 and 1986, many pages had been blacked out for security reasons by the CIA. The newly declassified version, in contrast, is nearly free of deletions and contains a wealth of new detail. The National Archives released the document late Wednesday to the nonprofit National Security Archive to prod the government to release all classified documents on the Bay of Pigs. Why were documents still being held on this issue? What was being hidden by the CIA at this late date? It is amazing that the CIA blamed JFK for the failure when clearly it was all their fault. By the way, it was meant to fail. The plan was to get JFK to use the United States military and invade. TODAY IN COAST GUARD AVIATION HISTORY - 28 APRIL 1910 (1 OF 2): Elmer "Archie" Fowler Stone joined the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service as a cadet at the Revenue Cutter Service School of Instruction on April 28, 1910 (predecessors to the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Academy - the name changed in 1915). Stone would graduate with a degree in engineering in June, 1913 and was commissioned a Third Lieutenant. He served aboard the cutters ONONDAGA and ITASCA…and it is here that we find the genesis of Stone’s love of aviation.
