Fabulous FANY’s!
Isn’t this a wonderful photo- It’s women of the First Aird Nursing Yeomanry in front of their ambulances on the Western Front, a photo taken – incredibly in 1916. The FANY’s were all female volunteers who worked as drivers, nurses and cooks in conflicts from 1907 onwards. (They still volunteer today) Just check out their massive winter coats – I think they look great.
In #WhenIWasyours the main character Vivienne and her sister work as ambulance drivers for the FANY’s in France. They had to drive from combat scenes to hospitals, from hospitals to stations, ports and mortuaries, often in pitch darkness and sometime under fire. This was based on the real life experiences of the war artist #OliveMudieCooke and her sister. These women were incredibly brave.
The colourization of this is incredible and really brings the women to life – It looks so contemporary, they could be our friends. It’s a real pain-staking task to succesfully colourise a black and white photo, and requires a massive attention to detail. This one has been done by @colourisedpieceofjake.
