1911 - El Primer Ministro Ruso Pyotr Stolypin es asesinado por un radical revolucionario en la ciudad de Kiev. Prominente político reformista que reconocía la necesidad de modernizar Rusia y desarrollar un sistema capitalista fuerte, se oponía aún así a cualquier forma de gobierno diferente a la autocracia zarista. Para Stolypin, la economía agraria tan alabada por los tradicionalistas rusos, era un obstáculo para el Imperio Ruso, el cual debía desarrollar sus industrias. Aún así, comprendía el poder que el campesinado poseía y por ello entendía la contradicción de la dependencia política en dicho sector. Los campesinos eran en esencia más leales al Zar que el proletariado de las ciudades. Desde muy temprano, alertó sobre la verdadera amenaza de las ideas socialistas y comunistas para la monarquía rusa. Si el futuro del Imperio Ruso estaba en sus industrias, no se podía dar el lujo de perder a sus clases trabajadoras ante ideologías revolucionarias. En 1906 fue nombrado Ministro del Interior por el Zar Nicolás II. Como ministro de la corte, nunca ocultó su desprecio contra Rasputín. Aplicó la pena de muerte en gran escala para aplastar los movimientos socialistas, y se negó a gobernar junto a la Duma. La confianza del Zar en él disminuyó debido a la influencia de la Zarina Alexandra, después que Stolypin intentase desterrar a Rasputín en 1911. En setiembre de ese mismo año, durante una gira junto al Zar en Ucrania, Pyotr Stolypin fue asesinado de dos disparos mientras asistía a una presentación en la Ópera de Kiev. ✨ in memoriam - alice winn ✨ i was telling someone about the premise of this book recently and i was saying ‘so it’s about a group of boys, in a boarding school, in 1914’ and they went ‘oh. i see where this going’ and you do! you know where this is going as this group of privileged, upper middle class boys, sign up to this war one by one. this war that is definitely going to be over by christmas 1914 a warning! i’ve not cried this much at a book in a while, and multiple times as well! so many times! but it also made me laugh out loud and it made my heart so warm and you meet so many characters surrounding these boys’ lives, both from home and then in those long years in the trenches. at the heart is a love story, between two boys who start off as friends, who know each other so so well, but the circumstances never seem to align for so so long. and there’s a war on! that’s the important part but you feel so so strongly for these 19/20/21 year olds who had no idea what they were signing up for it also looks at class dynamics within the trenches as well as family expectations, those who may have german connections, and those who may be pacifists but have no other choice it’s heartwrenching and beautifully written and romantic and sad and it’s a long, sometimes hard, read but it’s so so worth it

Private Thomas Alfred Sewell 12171, 2nd Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment (then 77005, 2nd Garrison Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers). Being sold together were these medals and medallion with 'Ypres 1929 Belgium 1st Prize Cematery [sic] Gardeners Flower Show' written on the box. With the Blitz destroying WWI service records and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission reportedly destroying records in 1970, this has been quite a challenging yet insightful and enjoyable research project. Essentially, I believe that the recipient of the medals is the same person who was the head gardener of Poelcapelle British Cemetery. Although, this site is not the easiest to have an in-depth explanation, I will give it a go with some of the main points, albeit slightly briefer than the booklet I am putting together. The reasons I believe it is the same person, beyond having the same name, are listed in the comments. Thank you for having a read! Irishmen fought on both sides of the Easter Rising. 'After the Rising began on Easter Monday the British authorities had to move troops into the city as quickly as possible. What was available militarily were largely reserve forces as the bulk of the army was involved directly in the fighting in World War One. The first troops to be activated were those stationed in Dublin. At the Royal Barracks was the 10th Service Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. In Richmond Barracks was the 3rd Reserve Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment. The Marlborough Barracks housed the 6th Reserve Cavalry, while at the Portobello Barracks were the 3rd Reserve Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles. These troops were moved during the afternoon of Easter Monday to various parts of the city, and all came into contact with rebel positions at various times. During the late afternoon and evening of Easter Monday troops were moved from the largest military base in Ireland, the Curragh Camp, into Dublin by way of Kingsbridge station. Trains arrived every 20 minutes throughout the evening and moved into the city men from the 3rd, 8th and 9th Cavalry Brigades, the 5th Leinster Regiment, the 5th Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and the 25th Infantry Brigade. By Tuesday 25 April the troops that had moved into the city from the Curragh were joined by forces from elsewhere across the island. From Athlone came the 5th Reserve Artillery with four operational artillery pieces, from Belfast 1,000 men of the 15th Reserve Infantry Brigade and from Templemore the 4th Extra Reserve Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Those British forces stationed in Ireland that were the first to be ordered to act against the Rising were predominantly Irish born, and many of them were volunteers who had signed up to fight against Germany. Despite being at home, these Irishmen were involved in the fighting in Dublin during Easter week, and many paid the ultimate price. #OnThisDay 1916 'Margaret Naylor was shot on the Ringsend Drawbridge (as it was then) at Boland’s Mills. By a dark coincidence, Margaret died the very same day as her husband John Naylor, who was serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Hulluch, France (1916 of course being halfway through World War I). Margaret died two days later, having suffered a gunshot wound while out buying bread for her children, shot by a dum dum hollow point rifle bullet. Her husband John was gassed at Hulluch'. They left three orphaned childred 'Tessie age 10 months, Margaret age 6 and Kitty age 3'. . . . Antigo Sabre do Império do Brasil ( Pll ) Transição Império/República Modelo ( 1852 ) Sabre modificado de Império para República Guarda em alpaca com dobradiça, apresentando a remoção do cartucho Pll e Coroa do Império Lamina Adamascada apresentando motivos militares, mas as gravações do Império como o Brasão Imperial e a gravação Pll foram removidas Empunhadura em madeira com 9 gomos, com seu aramado torcido presente, mas faltando o acabamento em couro Espiga aprisionada ao pomo por parafuso rosqueado Bainha em alpaca com 2 argolas, faltando o guarda-lama, apresentando danos por atrito e perda parcial da ponta Sabre muito interessante, pois podemos identificar um pouco de sua história. Esse é um sabre modelo 1852 do Império do Brasil, que foi modificado para República, podendo ser utilizado na transição ( Império/República ), na sua guarda podemos ver que o ( Brasão Imperial Pll ) foi removido para continuar em uso após a proclamação da República. Também podemos ver na lamina, que as gravações Imperiais foram removidas. A bainha desse sabre apresenta 02 argolas, isso indica que o mesmo foi utilizado até 1908, pois após essa data, os sabre/espadas passaram a ter somete 01 argola na bainha. Então podemos dizer que esse sabre foi utilizado durante o período Imperial, modificado e reutilizado na transição Império/República até 1908. Sabre difícil de conseguir e muito interessante, pois conta uma história. Sorting through old paperwork today I found this exquisite birthday card written by my great great grandfather to my grandmother for her 21st birthday. He was born in the 1870s and lived in the East end of London, dirt poor and illiterate. Not only did he meticulously copy what someone else had written he was so poor he couldn't afford to buy another card when he had made a mistake. This would have been an absolute extravance to buy in the first place. He lived through the start of the suffragette movement, WW1 and the great depression. A memorial of the Scots Greys stands on a rock pedestal high above Princess Street Gardens in Edinburgh. The bronze statue, unveiled in 1906 to commemorate the regiment’s dead in the Boer War, depicts a trooper, designed by William Birnie Rhind. Ship: SMS Seydlitz Type: Modified Moltke Class Großekreuzer Germany: Germany - Kaiserliche Marine Location: Wilhelmshaven, Germany Date: After June 3d, 1916 As seen from a porthole aboard the Nassau class battleship SMS Posen, a crew-member snaps a photo of the post Skagerrak damaged battlecruiser SMS Seydlitz. The photographer gets the damaged 28cm Turrets Caesar & Dora and more specifically the 12in hit on the rear of Turret Caesar. During the battle at 20:30, the 12in projectile penetrated the bottom edge of the aft portion of the turret. When the hit occurred, the turret was turned 85 degrees to starboard. A semi-circular hole was opened in the turret. The pieces of armor & shell exploded into the turret and caused damage & four cordite charges were ignited. The fire they caused was able to be put out during a lull in combat. Splinters from the shell explosion were thrown all over the Batterie Deck. The electrical cables used to traverse Turret Caesar & Dora were severed. Execution of a French soldier (or possibly a foreign spy) by firing squad, ca. 1915. . Today 107 years ago, on April 29, 1917, the French Army mutinies of 1917 began as French units began disobeying orders en masse. . On April 16, 1917, the French Army had launched their 'Nivelle Offensive' in the Second Battle of the Aisne, being named after the operation's brainchild, French Commander-in-Chief Nivelle, who promised the offensive would win the war "within 48 hours", with French casualties estimated at 10,000. . Due to several reasons, the offensive was a disaster as the French suffered 187,000 casualties in under a month, having only advanced 7 km - the German defenses standing firm on the 'Chemin des Dames' ridge. . The bloody failure pushed the French soldiers over the edge, as they began to mutiny en masse on April 29, being fed-up with the war and their poor conditions. The soldiers mutinied by disobeying their officers' orders, refusing to enter the trenches, and some even violently attacking officers. . The soldiers weren't protesting the war itself nor them defending France, but the way they were sent into battle and slaughtered for no gains. They were also fed up with the poor conditions the soldiers faced in the trenches, wanting better food and more leave. . 49 French Divisions of 113 were eventually affected by the mutinies, around 43%. However, only 24 Divisions were deemed 'badly affected'. . As a result of the mutinies, 3,400 French soldiers were court-martialed; 554 mutineers were sentenced to death but over 90% had their sentences reprieved. Nivelle was sacked and replaced by General Pétain, who promised better conditions for the French troops and no more useless offensives. . The French mutinies of 1917, combined with the Russian Revolution in February 1917, gave signs that the Allied armies' spirits were near collapse.
