Here’s another household name: Enid Bagnold. Don’t recognise her? She wrote ‘National Velvet’ in 1935, among other popular novels. She was born in 1889, the daughter of an army officer. When WWI broke out, she volunteered with the FANYs and went to France. She wrote two books about her time ‘over there’ called ‘A Diary Without Dates’ and ‘The Happy Foreigner.’ She married in 1920 and became Lady Jones, but used her maiden name for her writing. She had four children. She died in 1981 and a biography by Anna Sebba was published 6 years later, revealing her personality as a difficult woman, which might not necessarily be a bad thing. #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #day28 #herstory #march #throwback #throwbackthursday #thursday #fany #firstaidnursingyeomanry #enidbagnold #author #nationalvelvet

Muriel Thompson (1875-1939) was quite a woman. Before she joined the FANYs, she could already drive. In fact, she was a racing driver, winning the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap in 1908 at Brooklands. The cars had been stripped down to reduce weight. The drivers’ skirts were tied to their ankles to prevent them getting caught in the car. There was another race a month later, but then the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club disallowed women racing for another 20 years. She was born into a wealthy family, where being a woman wasn’t a restricting factor. She had been driving from a young age and even chauffeured Emmeline Pankhurst for the Women’s Social and Political Union. When the war started, Muriel wanted to do her bit. She converted her Cadillac into an ambulance and went to France with the FANY. She evacuated Belgian troops under fire in Belgium, being awarded the Order of Leopold II. The Croix de Guerre and the Military Medal for her tireless effort to rescue casualties during an air raid in 1918. She died of encephalitis lethargica and is buried in Brompton cemetery, London. #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #herstory #fany #firstaidnursingyeomanry #racing #carracing #brooklands #day27 #march #suffragette #murielthompson #militarymedal #wednesday #wisdom #wednesdaywisdom

‘Her courage and endurance in the face of danger were a fine example of English womanhood.’ – War Office, 25th November 1928 on the announcement of the awarding of the Military Medal to Rachel Gertrude Moseley. She was born in 1874, on of six children. During WWI, Rachel joined the FANYs and worked with the French Army. She was sent to help to evacuate the hospitals. Constance Barbara Clarke (1867-1931) was a nurse in London before the outbreak of WWI. She volunteered to go to overseas with the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANYs) and served in Belgian and English hospitals. She received 5 war decorations. After the war, Constance because one of the most famous female yacht racers in the world. Part of the winning team in the American Cup in 1921 and she was the only female competitor in the King of Spain’s Cup in 1925, where she won. Beryl ‘Betty’ Hutchinson was born in 1892 near Rochdale. She joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANYs) in 1914 and went to France in 1915. At first she drove a mobile kitchen, but soon she was looking after casualties of the first gas attack. She used sanitary towels soaked in vinegar to treat the soldiers. She became 2nd in command and was awarded a MBE for her service. Like Molly, Betty rejoined the FANYs in WWII and eventually was moved to the Auxiliary Territorial Service with her unit. After the war ended, she studied palmistry (palm reading) and wrote a book called ‘Your Life in Your Hands.’ #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #herstory #saturday #day23 #march #berylhutchinson #fany #firstaidnursingyeomanry #WWI #palmreading #palmistry #wwii #ambulance

If you ride side saddle in the UK, you are probably aware of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. It started as a corps of young women, who had their own horses and were good riders. Their mission was to administer first aid on the battlefield before they were transported to the casualty clearing stations. As WWI broke out, horses were replaced by ambulances, but the bravery remained. We’re going to spend the next 7 days looking at some of the extraordinary women of the FANY. Mary ‘Molly’ O’Connell-Bianconi was born in 1896 in County Clare, Ireland. She is recognised for her unwavering sense of duty in 1918, as she took her ambulance through a heavy barrage of German artillery to rescue Allied casualties. She pulled the injured soldiers out of the dirt, gave them first aid and evacuated them from the front line. She worked for hours and was awarded the Military Medal by King George V and a citation for bravery. After the war, she returned to civilian life, getting married and running a hotel. In 1939, she rejoined the FANY and even became a Junior Commander in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She died aged 72 in 1968. On the subject of despatch riders, I found this debate in parliament very interesting to read. It's from 6th July 1943, a link can be found below. Lord Brabazon Of Tara had the following question: "To ask His Majesty's Government, how it is that the R.A.F. do not employ women as motor bicycle dispatch riders, in order to save man-power; how it is that both the Navy and the Army employ women with complete success, and that the R.F.C. used women as motor cyclists successfully in the last war, yet the W.A.A.F. do nothing in the matter." It appears that the RAF did not deem it appropriate for women in the WAAF to drive motorcycles, although they were employed as drivers, as they believed the RAF motorcycles were too powerful, despite women of the Army (ATS and FANY) and Navy (WRNS) being employed on despatch duties. "For one thing the motor cycles in use by the Royal Air Force are of the heavy 500 c.c. type. They are used on rough roads and they have to stand up to very hard work. Now these motor bicycles which, as some of your Lordships may have seen for yourselves, are very big machines, are not suitable for women to ride". Although, from my limited research I believe the RAF certainly did have motorcycles of lower power. The WAAF were never officially used for duties on a motorcycle during WWII. I’m so proud to have been able to work with Pat and Jean Owtram on their two volumes of memoir: Codebreaking Sisters and Century Sisters, which is out this week. Codebreaking Sisters detailed their time in the women’s services during WW2 but Century Sisters takes us back even further to their 1920s childhood in Lancashire’s beautiful Lune Valley. Back in January, I visited Jean there to work on her section of the book. I’m very sad that she didn’t live to see it published. We raised a glass to Jean at Pat’s 100th birthday party yesterday. #centurysisters #codebreakingsisters #ww2 #1920s #womensroyalnavalservice #firstaidnursingyeomanry #lancashire #lunevalley #lunevalleylife

Visited the grave of British spy, diplomat and public servant Daphne Margaret Sybil Désirée Park also known as Baroness Park of Monmouth. In 1943 she was a member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (or FANY for short, let's be mature about this 😂), it was during that time she came to the attention of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), due to her understanding of ciphers. From their she rose to the rank of sergeant and played a part in Operation Jedburgh (which in a nut shell was a series of sabotage and guerrilla warfare, as well as leading local resistance forces in actions against the Germans). After the war she rose further through the ranks of MI6 to become senior controller were she was stationed in Austria, Moscow, the Congo, Zambia and Hanoi. While many details about her time as a spy are still under wraps, rest assured she kicked some arse in her day. #daphnepark #baroness #spy #diplomat #publicservant #firstaidnursingyeomanry #soe #operationjedburgh #mi6 #grave #gravevisiting #badarse #patriot #wolvercotecemetery

This photograph of Miss Beauchamp Waddell appeared in the Mirror on 1st May 1918. Catharine Washington known as Pat Waddell born Catharine Marguerite Beauchamp Waddell (9th January 1892 – 25th December 1972) was a British volunteer ambulance driver, writer and member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY). She lost a leg but returned in the First World War and she then served again in the Second World War. She was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, the Belgian Médaille de la reine Élisabeth and the Polish Grand Cross of Merit (military class) In May 1917 she was driving a noisy chain-driven Willys Overland "ambulance" when it was hit by a train. The stretcher bearer was killed instantly and Washington had to have her leg replaced with an artificial limb. If she had been a man then the cost would have been covered, but she had to pay for the replacement leg. She recovered and went back to active duty in 1918. After the war in 1919 she published Fanny Goes to War using the nom de plume of Pat Beauchamp. She left the FANY and married Peter Washington who she had met while she was recovering from losing her leg and he was also wounded. They had two children but the marriage was short. She travelled extensively and her disability clearly didn’t hold her back. The 1939 register shows she was teaching cooking and other domestic skills. She was also noted down as a volunteer ambulance driver for FANY. Catharine left £48k in her will, a very large amount. She clearly didn’t need to teach so must have enjoyed the profession. This story is shared with kind permission from Debbie Fisher who wrote it for the Remembering British Women in WWI - The Homefront & Overseas Facebook Group #WWI #greatwar #firstworldwar #FANY #firstaidnursingyeomanry #womenatwar #womenshistory #ambulancedriver https://www.facebook.com/groups/1468972083412699/?ref=share

Tonights update includes this fantastic Women's Transport Section First Aid Nursing Yeomanry uniform grouping which belonged to M. C. Harvey who served in North West Europe in 1944-45 with the Joint War Organisation. This grouping consists of an original Service Dress jacket and skirt, matching trousers, battledress blouse, Sam Browne belt and two ties. It belonged to a lady who served with the Joint War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St John of Jerusalem which was created in the Great War and reinstated in 1939 for the duration of the Second World War. The JWO was one of a number of relief agencies which served abroad during 1944 when it was officially recognised by the War Office. Its volunteers worked behind the front lines supplying transport and medical stores before establishing relief and rehabilitation services in liberated areas. The original owner of this set was a member of the WTS so would have been attached to the JWO to work on their transport lines. The addition of the France and Germany Star fitted to the breast of the tunic means that she served in North West Europe in 1944-45 with this unit. Undoubtedly my best and favourite find from a brief lark yesterday is this Women’s Transport Service (FANY) cap or collar badge from WW2. The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) is a British independent women’s charity formed in 1907 which was active in nursing, life-saving and intelligence work during both World Wars. There’s much history around the organisation, but to summarise before WW2 it was known as the FANY and given the ‘yeomanry’ name as it’s members were originally mounted on horseback. It was a first aid link between the field hospitals and the front lines in WW1. After WW1, the organisation was not disbanded unlike many others due to its status as independent and self-financing. In 1937, wishing to move away completely from any assumed connection with formal nursing, the Corps became the Women’s Transport Service. At the start of the war the WTS/FANY was led by Mary Baxter Ellis (see in pic 2, sporting the uniform and showing the badges) who had served with the Corps during WW1. The WTS/FANY worked closely with the also all-female Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), set up specifically for the Second World War. A better known role of the WTS/FANY in WW2 was their service with the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a secret organisation set up with the aim of women’s espionage, sabotage and giving aid to resistance groups against the axis powers. One such individual was Odette Hallowes (see pic 3), who was incarcerated and tortured by the Nazis but survived and was awarded the George Cross. Another such individual in the SEO and WTS/FANY was Nancy Wake (see pic 4), who joined the French Resistance and was awarded the George Medal. What a great find, and another fascinating piece of Second World War history from this spot. It seems many people chose to sadly throw away their uniforms and badges, which is how I’ve found them at the dump. #ww2 #FANY #WTS #womenstransportservice #firstaidnursingyeomanry #ww2badge #ww2treasure #ww2britain #secondworldwar #mudlarking

Women riding horseback 🏇 jumping over this trench to rescue fallen men in battlefield?? This sculpture sat beautifully in the stunning landscape of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park when I was there in the winter. I have to admit I didn’t really understand what was going on with this piece when I was there, but the story behind this work is very interesting. It’s called The Coffin Jump by @katrina_palmer_a and it has a reference to the all-female First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY). The initial vision for this group was for women to literally ride on horseback to rescue injured men on the battlefield in the First World War. Unfortunately the horses were dropped and they drove motored ambulances 🚑 instead. Amazingly the British army initially refused to be associated with the group because of prejudice. The hand painted phrase ‘nothing special happened’ along with others such as ‘woman saves man’ in the piece, highlights the everyday heroism of woman during the First World War. Very poetic. Sometimes a horse and a local rider can be seen galloping across across the park to make the jump. The FANY has now changed its name to the Princess Royal’s Volunteer Corps and it is the longest established uniformed military voluntary organisation for women in the world. They were deployed in terrorist attacks in London, Manchester and London Bridge and to the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #artinnature #firstaidnursingyeomanry #yorkshiresculpturepark #firstworldwar #nurses #horsejump #womanpower #everydayheroes

A fantastic original battledress jacket which belonged to Patricia Thelma Vine who served with the Women's Transport Service First Aid Nursing Yeomanry during the Second World War. The The jacket is a standard issue British Army 1940 Pattern (Austerity) battledress blouse. These were often issued to women in place of ATS pattern examples, particularly in the latter part of the Second World War. The jacket is a small size and has been tailored with shoulder pads being added - a typical period addition. One of the most inspiring pieces for me at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park was this, the Coffin Jump. It was installed to commemorate the work of the FANY the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry in WW1. These brave women volunteered to help rescue injured men from the battlefield in WW1 yet much of what they did isn’t well known. Originally they were meant to ride on horseback but they actually used motorised ambulances but this is what inspired the installation. The phrase “nothing special happened” is supposed to highlight the everyday heroism of these women during this period which has been so overlooked by the history books. The FANY are still going with them being deployed after the terrorist attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge and after the Grenfell Tower fire. #yorkshiresculpturepark #thecoffinjump #thecoffinjumphorse #fany #firstaidnursingyeomanry #everydayheroism #horseriding #horsejumping #ww1 #firstworldwar #yorkshire #visityorkshire #visitengland #uktravelguide #uktravelblogger #ukhistory #artinmotion

The Coffin Jump, Katrina Palmer, Yorkshire Sculpture Park The Coffin Jump takes as a point of departure the role of an extraordinary group of women in the First World War and symbolises the new challenges and freedoms afforded to women in the war, with specific reference to the all-female First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY).  The art work is an intervention in the historic deer park, comprising an inscribed fence above a trench. This negative horizon, a line that cuts across the landscape and descends into a shallow depression, resonates with the trench as a site of mortality but also new beginnings as the woman on horseback cheats death. Hand-painted on the horse jump, phrases such as ‘woman saves man’ and ‘nothing special happened’ highlight the everyday heroism of women during the First World War, capturing the sense that the FANYs were doing their job and getting on with what had to be done in a practical manner. In other words, women’s courageousness and selflessness is not exceptional, rather it is taken in their stride. In her work, Palmer uses writing as a form of sculpture in which the object is elaborated through spatialised narratives. #Palmer #KatrinaPalmer #CoffinJump #FANY #FirstAidNursingYeomanry #Narratives #Art #NorthingSpecialHappened #WomanSavesMan #Representation #YorkshireSculpturePark #Modern #Sculpture #Design #ArtHistory #Display #Yorkshire #ThisIsYorkshire #VisitYorkshire #Yorks #ThisIsYorks #Explore #Discover #LookCloser #Think

#ObjectOfTheWeek is this First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) hat, currently on loan from the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry - PRVC. This hat belonged to Captain Dorothea ‘Dee’ Hewlett, who was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star and the War Medal. Initially a driver, Hewlett later taught on intelligence courses. https://www.militaryintelligencemuseum.org/women-in-intelligence-2/fany-hat The hat features in a new display recently put together by our Assistant Curator, which can be seen when we reopen on the 1st September. #WWII #FirstAidNursingYeomanry #FANY #SecondWorldWar #WomenInIntelligence #WomensHistory #MilitaryIntelligence #BedfordshireMuseums #Museums #Bedfordshire

THIS is my favourite Xmas card. ‘Pushing on’ - F.A.N.Y on the Western Front’ #WWI (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) painting by @tjgodden 👊🏼) Aptly it was sent to me by 97 yr old ex-FANY Joyce Wilding who was in #SOE branch during WW2. (Pics 2-4, she’s only just given up tennis (blame covid!) and wears a tea-dress better than #katemiddleton.) Yes she is a bright ⭐️in my 2021 book #armygirls - and the card a timely reminder face masks once kept us warm!! # #wwii #womeninthemilitary #womenwhoserve @fany_prvc #fany #firstaidnursingyeomanry #ww2

Fabulous FANY’s! Isn’t this a wonderful photo- It’s women of the First Aird Nursing Yeomanry in front of their ambulances on the Western Front, a photo taken – incredibly in 1916. The FANY’s were all female volunteers who worked as drivers, nurses and cooks in conflicts from 1907 onwards. (They still volunteer today) Just check out their massive winter coats – I think they look great. In #WhenIWasyours the main character Vivienne and her sister work as ambulance drivers for the FANY’s in France. They had to drive from combat scenes to hospitals, from hospitals to stations, ports and mortuaries, often in pitch darkness and sometime under fire. This was based on the real life experiences of the war artist #OliveMudieCooke and her sister. These women were incredibly brave. The colourization of this is incredible and really brings the women to life – It looks so contemporary, they could be our friends. It’s a real pain-staking task to succesfully colourise a black and white photo, and requires a massive attention to detail. This one has been done by @colourisedpieceofjake. If you're interested, do check out some of his other work too and some of the other ‘colourisers’. They really do an amazing job of showing the human face of conflicts. #WW1 #inspirationalwomen #ambulancedriver #womenonthewesternfront #newreleases #historicalfictionbooks #historicalfictionnovel #historylovers #lovestories #firstaidnursingyeomanry

“Military cemetery at Étaples” by WWI ambulance driver and artist Olive Mudie-Cooke (1890-1925). Regular followers of these posts will know that I am moved by the way that trauma, as exemplified by the trauma of war, impacts on the work of artists. Some escape to visions of bucolic rural life, some remain broken by their scars and deeply flawed. In January 1916, fledgling artist Mudie-Cooke and her elder sister Phyllis went to France as volunteer members of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, FANY. Mudie-Cooke began to sketch and paint the scenes she saw around her, both among her fellow ambulance drivers and the medical staff they were working with. In 1920 the British Red Cross commissioned her to return to France to record the activities of the Voluntary Aid Detachment units who were still providing care and relief there. Her paintings from this visit include examples of war damage, the shattered landscapes of the former battlefields and women tending graves in a cemetery. Olive Mudie-Cooke returned to England for a short period before returning to France in 1925 where she took her own life following the breakup of a relationship. What deeper trauma lay within I can only guess at, but I’m sure that her untimely death cut short the career of a deeply sensitive and talented artist, who deserves greater recognition. #olivemudiecooke #ambulancedriver #firstaidnursingyeomanry #voluntaryaiddetachment #étaples #wwi #lithography #warartists #firstworldwar #historyofart #arthistory #interwarbritishart #trauma #artcollector #womanartists

Lockdown VE Day Garden Party! 🇬🇧 We had a fantastically fun, action packed day! It started with cake and jelly making, then onto creating paper chains and decorating outside! We had a party lunch whilst listening to some war time music and we then enjoyed a teddy bears’ picnic and aeroplane racing! We also spent time thinking of our gorgeous Granny (Gan Gan) who is 96 years young and served with The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry ( @fany_prvc )and our dearly missed Grandad who served with the RAF Coastal Command and who 75 years ago was celebrating on the Champs-Élysées! 🥳 I am hoping all of this activity means the kids will sleep well tonight as I am shattered! 😴 We hope you are all safe and well and want to say a big thank you to everyone who kept us safe all those years ago and to those keeping us safe now 😊 Keep tagging your activities with #may_play and @monthly_play so we can share team favourites! 😊 #makeamesswithmama #may_play #veday #veday75 #lockdownveday #gardenparty #baking #partytime #aeroplanes #teddybearspicnic #creative_little_hands #thelockdownlist #inalldayplay #isolationinspiration #remembering #thankyou #grandparents #wpdweeklychallenge #paperchains #firstaidnursingyeomanry #royalairforce #ww2

In the run up to #internationalwomensday 2020 we wanted to focus on just some of the females that we support here at GL RFCA, so each day leading up to Sunday we will hear different stories from strong women from the reserves, cadets or FANY💥 Meet Laura Lean from the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY). 💥 “I joined the FANY to serve the community, to learn new skills, to take on new challenges, to meet liked minded people. 💥 Spending 10 years in the corps has given me opportunities that I would have never have had if I hadn’t joined, for example I have had the extraordinary privilege of gaining my parachute wings with the French army. But it also gives me the opportunity to give back to society. It's always hard being part of a response team to a major incident but I know that our work has a real impact on those affected by incidents such as the 2019 London Bridge attack and 2017 Grenfell fire.” 💥 To find out more about what the FANYs do or want to get involved, go to their website now to learn more about what this amazing group of UNPAID volunteer females do! 🙋‍♀️🧗👩‍🎓👩‍🔧🧑‍🏭👩‍✈️👩‍🚒🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️⛹️‍♀️🏊‍♀️🚵‍♀️ #femalereserves #femalecadets #rfca #london #womenindefence #firstaidnursingyeomanry
