EZE NRI OBALIKE, the 15th recorded Eze Nri (King of the ancient Nri Kingdom), said to have reigned from around from 1889 to 1936. The Nri Kingdom is arguably the oldest kingdom in Nigeria. Eze Nri Obalike reigned at the height of British colonial imposition into north central Igboland. He was forced to annul the laws of Nri which opposed British colonial interests. He was the first Eze Nri to leave Nri to attend a native court in Awka, compelled by the British under threat to his people. The whole assembly at the court rose and prepared to flee when he arrived because it was the first time an Eze Nri was seen in person!
