Kind The Kingdom of Nri was an Igbo polity based on southern Nigeria that started around 10th century AD until 1911 when they were overthrown by the British. What was notable about this kingdom is its commitment to pacifism and non-violence. The kingdom was ruled by a priest-king called Eze Nri, who managed trade and diplomacy of the Nri people and maintained an unbroken line of succession from the first king named Eri, described as a sky being. Because of its non-violent policy, the kingdom was a haven and welcome those who have been rejected by their communities, especially the physical and mentally disabled and orphans. They abhor slavery, and slaves that made it to the boundary of the kingdom were automatically set free. The kingdom expanded not through warfare or conquest but by allegiance where neighboring regions agree to join the kingdom through conversion or diplomacy. The policy, beliefs, and taboos have shaped much of the northern and western Igbo people to this day. The Eze Nri is still around and continues guides the Nri people. #art #drawing #digitalart #digitaldrawing #procreate #madewithprocreate #digitalpainting #beatboard #storybeat #visualstorytelling #inktober #inktober2022 #inktoberkind #kind #inktoberprompts #drawingprompt #history #historytrivia #igbo #igbohistory #nri #kingdomofnri #nigerianhistory #nigeria #ezenri #igboland #pacifism #africanhistory

EZE NRI OBALIKE, the 15th recorded Eze Nri (King of the ancient Nri Kingdom), said to have reigned from around from 1889 to 1936. The Nri Kingdom is arguably the oldest kingdom in Nigeria. Eze Nri Obalike reigned at the height of British colonial imposition into north central Igboland. He was forced to annul the laws of Nri which opposed British colonial interests. He was the first Eze Nri to leave Nri to attend a native court in Awka, compelled by the British under threat to his people. The whole assembly at the court rose and prepared to flee when he arrived because it was the first time an Eze Nri was seen in person! This picture was taken around 1910-11. #eclectichistories #nri #ezenri #nrikingdom #igbo #ibo #nigeria #africa #blackculture #blacklivesmatter #anambra #blackhistory #history #culture #ezenriobalike #britain #life #awka #eze #king #blackmen #africanmen #africanculture #westafrica #explore #explorepage

A Lowkey Punk/MathRock Christmas look for Naomi, AKA little @doaldon 🎄 I had riot brining this young lady's vision to life: "this hand black gray and white with checkers on the middle finger, and this hand red and green (for Christmas) with checkers on the middle finger" 👏🏼🖤🏁 💡She rolled with my suggestion on the checkers stripe accent. She liked green more than red for the one hand of solids. When time to decide what color to make dominant on the greyscale hand, I asked if she preferred black or white? The way she said "BLACK!" decisively, I excitedly, & w/ a shy grin.... I knew she meant "Power to the people" ✊🏾 In fact, this is lowkey inspo for #manibhm coming up in February... Nri people believe that Eri derived his divinity from Chukwu (the Creator) and all Eze Nri are believed to derive their sacred and mystical powers from Eri. This mystical power has passed down from generation to generation (patrilineally) to the present Eze Nri, who holds the original ofo and alo of both Agukwu and Diodo Kingship. To become Eze Nri, one must hold all the titles except that Of Nri i.e. the Ozi title. Succession of the Eze Nri (based on observations from a 20th century succession); The major lineages take turns to produce a candidate for Eze Nri. However the candidate is not elected or appointed. The fact that Eze Nri to be is not selected is regarded as a ritual statement. The candidate would begin to see signs, such as the former Eze Nri appearing to him in a dream. Then people would begin to watch out for signs which such as the walls of candidate's compound collapsing in the dry season. Other signs included the candidate predicting the future, having the ability to make it rain or prevent it or causing plagues eg of locusts. However despite the signs and the manifestation of mystical powers (although these were a sure indication that the candidate has been elected to succeed by the spirit of the past Eze Nri) the future Eze Nri had to be confirmed by divination (afa), which required three different diviners to reach the same unanimous conclusion. Once confirmed the coronation ceremony would proceed which had a number of stages: 1st Stage; The Visitation - The future leader visited all the temples of the past Eze Nri and all the alusi in Nri in their order of seniority where sacrifices would have to be made. The future Eze Nri would also travel to Umu Diana offering more sacrifices. The Eze Nri was then given a small Adama boy from Umu Diana lineage to carry his wooden bowl of white chalk as he traveled to other Igbo towns. 2nd Stage: The Journey to Aguleri - The future Eze Nri was then accompanied by musicians, representatives of Sri lineages and his wives to a number of towns where he spent a night, spending 4 nights in Aguleri in order to receive a lump of clay from the river Eri came down on (the Anambra river)...[cont]

Ichi refers to a facial scarification ritual performed on Igbo noble men of Nigeria, for example men taking the Ichi (Nze Ichi) title. This is not a tribal mark per say but a titular mark in the form of the winged solar disc, the emblem representing the Chi of the sun (a fractal representation of Chukwu - The Creator). Those who wore Ichi held the sacred power of the Eze Nri, the Priest-King of Nri, enabling them to perform ritual cleansings. “Altogether, it took sixteen straight lines, eight crosses, for a full face scarification that mirrored the rays of the sun. It was their way of honouring the sun. But it was more than that. It was the face and service and another way of losing one’s facial personality.” To lose one's facial personality through masquerade and ichi is to give room for the sacred to enter. These men had, as of necessity, the ichi facial scarification by which they were recognised. It was a religious prerequisite for those taking the Ozo (Nze Agbala) title thus indicating that a man had been initiated into nobility or social elite.  Ichi is seen as a sign of class stratification, not only by virtue of receiving the marks, but by the Nwa Ichi’s ability to ‘hire’ the costly implements used to make the mark. Ichi were not comprised of raised keloids but were instead made of long furrows, cut out with a sharp, leaf-bladed knife . The art of ichi facial scarification was mainly the work of the Umudioka communities (in Neni and seven other towns among the Igbo), they were historically known as specialist surgeons who carried out ichi and nki facial scarification, mbubu (body marking from neck to belly) and iwa eze (tooth filing), they went from place to place carrying out these major operations. The ichi scarification process began with a journey by the Nwadioka (ichi specialist from Umudioka) to the Nwa Ichi (his client). The Nwadioka is accompanied by Nwa Nso, an assistant who carries the the Nwadioka’s tool bag and prepares the ground (mat and wooden pillow) on which the Nwa Ichi lies for the marking. He was also accompanied by the Nwa Mgbado Ichi, a second assistant who held down the Nwa Ichi’s legs on the mat...[cont]

The Kingdom of Nri, in the Igbo language called Ọ̀ràézè Ǹrì is a medieval Igbo Kingdom that originated around 900 AD to 1911. The Kingdom was then reinstated and is still in existence today, although influence and territory has significantly waned. It is among the oldest existing monarchies in Nigeria, and had its capital at Igbo-Ukwu. The Kingdom of Nri was unusual in the history of world governments in that its leader exercised no military power over his subjects. The Kingdom's philosophy was peace, wisdom, justice, harmony and being one with creation. The basis of this pacification is in the Nri religious belief that violence was an abomination that polluted the earth. Unlike most contemporaneous kingdoms, slavery was frowned upon, thus the Kingdom of Nri was a place where all people were welcomed including outcasts from other communities and runaway slaves. The Nri Kingdom is popularly credited as being the cradle for Igbo civilization, culture, and religious practices, the latter being what they were revered for. Their religious institutions were so highly revered it instilled fear in people. The kingdom existed as a sphere of religious and political influence over much of Igboland, and was administered by a priest-king called the Eze Nri. The Eze Nri's method of leadership which was a cult-like religious-polity, a theocratic (a community governed by a god or priests) indirect leadership style. Hence the undisputed influence over all Igbo territories. It was the base for all Igbo cultural, traditional and economic activities, and at its peak, its influence extended outside of Igbo lands however the kingdom did not have absolute control over the whole of Igbo lands. Origins (1 of many oral traditions) The Eri period is said to have started around 800 AD based oral tradition in the Anambra valley. It is said Eri ,who is believed to have established the Nri line of kingship, was sent by Chukwu (the Creator) from the sky to rule mankind; he (Eri) came down the Anambra River to near Aguleri. Eri is belived to have settled among the indigenous (Igbo) people, during which time he married daughters of the land who bore him children...[cont]

Two igbo masquerade dancer - circa early 1900’s The Kingdom of Nri (Igbo: Ọ̀ràézè Ǹrì) was a medieval polity located in what is now Nigeria. The kingdom existed as a sphere of religious and political influence over a third of Igboland, and was administered by a priest-king called an Eze Nri. The Eze Nri managed trade and diplomacy on behalf of the Nri people, a subgroup of the Igbo-speaking people, and possessed divine authority in religious matters. The kingdom was a haven for all those who had been rejected in their communities and also a place where slaves were set free from their bondage. Nri expanded through converts gaining neighboring communities' allegiance, not by force. Nri's royal founder, Eri, is said to be a 'sky being' that came down to earth and then established civilization. One of the better-known remnants of the Nri civilization is manifested in the igbo ukwu artifacts. Nri's culture permanently influenced the Northern and Western Igbo, especially through religion and taboos. Image: Photo by “Igbo masquerade dancers. Nri-Awka region, Nigeria. Early 1900s . An Igbo Civilization, (Ọ̀ràézè Ǹrì). Odinani Meaning “Ways of our Land” was the belief of the Nri kingdom, Nri is the glory of Igbo past and present. Long before the foundation of Onitsha Kingdom around 1700, long before the rise of Arochukwu in 1650 and long before the establishment of Aboh and Oguta Kingdoms between 1700 and 1750, Nri Kingdom and its hegemonic influence had been established and felt in a large portion of Igbo land from around AD 800 to 1910. The myth of Nri was just like the present bible story to the Igbo. Nri also known as “head of the earth force, isi ana” believed in God, the Creator – They also believed that Chukwu Okike and Chukwu gave them spiritual powers; hence they were able to bring the Igbos together (Chikoba Ndi-Igbo). linguistically: 'Igbo nwe eze ora eri ndudugandu', meaning, Igbo have democratic kings, generations ago. According to Aguleri; Aguleri is the first son of Eri who migrated from Egypt, The origin of Nri is Egypt about two centuries ago and the father of Nri was called Gad. Gad was the son of Jacob while Jacob was the son of Isaac and Isaac was the son of Abraham. The family tree of Nri was traced from the origin of Abraham who was the favourite child of God. Scholars and Historians have compared Nri kingdom to the religious cities of Rome and Mecca, with similarities of the Hebrews during the bible era. Nri kingdom’s ideology was known as peace-culture. Rulers of Nri did not use military conquest, but used religious authority, The spiritually ordained “Eze Nri” (Divine king of Nri), is believed to be a spirit, Nri kingdom only emphasis on peace, “UDO”. UDO NRI as it is called, was given a ritual sanction, democratically controlled by EZE NRI Nri town was the center of Igbo pilgrimage, dated before AD 900 until 1911 when the British troops forced them to end its political power and ordered all Igbos to avoid Nri. The early missionaries were solidly behind this move to destroy the institution to enable them achieve their colonial objectives #nrikingdom #biafra #Ezenri #udonri #spirituality #colonisation #ChukwuOkike #missionary #Abraham #Eri #Arochukwu #PeaceCulture #westafrican #igbo #igboamaka

Joseph Lewis (@antisocial_m_e_d_i_a_ ) as Eze Nri of the Nri Igbo.🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹 • According to legend Eri, the first Eze Nri descended into the world from the heavens and found himself standing on an anthill surrounded by wet and marshy land. He complained to the high God Chukwu about his situation, who then sent down a blacksmith, who dried the earth with his bellows. This blacksmith would become the ancestor of the legendary Awka blacksmiths who are the most famed metalworkers in Igboland. The place he founded was Aguleri the capital of what would become the Kingdom of Nri. 🔹🔹🔹 • • Eze bore a son named Nri who found that the Igbo people were without sustenance as the mystical food provided to them by his father Eri left from the world upon his death. To remedy this he sacrificed his own two children to the earth. From his son sprouted the yam plant and from his daughter came the Cocoyam two of the major crops of the Igbo people. In exchange for such a grave sacrifice the Eze’s reserved the right to purify the land of taboos, preside over sacred religious rites and play a significant role in the installation of title holders. In a place were one’s children are more important than almost anything he sacrificed what was most beloved to feed his people. The willingness to offer ultimate sacrifice and experience terrible loss for one's people is a common theme in the foundation myths for many of our ancestors. #TheFoundersProject #BuyBlack #africanart #blackmillennials #blackartist #teachmeblkhistory #educator #100blackmen #blavity

#Igbo Author & Lawyer Remy Ilona from the Priestly Clan stated in his work "Igbos: Jews in #Africa" that the #RedFez that men in important positions wear such as the #Priest, leaders & royalty was probably the original #Hebrew head-covering for men i.e. #Yamaka. "The red cap is from #Nri ('the land of the ideal manifestation, the Nri are the priest who maybe #Levites or descendants of #Gad through his son Eri') and was given to the Ozo (meaning 'saviours') and Nze (apprentice Ozo) who were 'peace warriors' that went on #spiritual missions (ifu ije or gbata ọsọ) across #Igboland. The red symbolises fire and fire Agbala, which is the 'holy spirit'. The red cap signifies that the Ozo and Nze are agents of Agbala. The ozo sects also acts as a 'parliament' from which the #EzeNri is selected.
