Did you know, “sustainability” does not necessarily mean “healthy.”

Well, when it comes to the environment it typically doesn’t.

Do you try to make conscious choices when buying groceries, skincare, cleaning products, etc.?

Do you find yourself in the shops opting for greener products that are labelled as “sustainable,” or even contains recycled contents?

Sustainable items like this are mostly aimed at protecting the environment. Not you, sadly.

This is where things need to change.

We need to preserve and regenerate the environment, but also protect our own health too.

One of my biggest frustrations is when ‘sustainable’ clothing labels incorporate PET plastic (recycled fishing nets) into activewear, or even, underwear.

Our skin is our largest organ & it is a sponge. PET plastic (and polyester!) can contain phthalates, antimony & formaldehyde. And when it comes to activewear, most is worn tight to the skin. And when you combine that with your body heat, you skin can start to absorb those toxins quickly.

I’ll expand on this soon, as it is a huge topic! But in the interim, when opting for “sustainable” items, ask yourself if it also will benefit your health. Or, if there is an alternative that supports BOTH the environment and your wellbeing.

Follow along for more tips and info on all things design & wellbeing.
