On our one and only afternoon in Hambantota we decided to visit Asia’s largest Birds Park and Research Centre 🦜
This was super spontaneous so neither of us did much research before going and we really wish we had 💻
Upon entering the bird park we were met with an array of beautiful and colourful birds. From flamingos to parrots, there were over 180 varieties of exotic birds. After snapping some photos we headed further into the park.
But as we progressed we noticed that a lot of the birds were kept in small, cramped cages and they looked in bad condition. There was a whole section of cages hidden towards the end of the park where the bird cages were covered in faeces and looked forgotten.
We’re not experts but we could tell that a lot of these birds weren’t in a good way. With missing feathers 🪶 and a lot of aggression displayed (even from typically less aggressive species). We actually came here to do bird feeding but decided against it as we didn’t want to promote this place or contribute any further. 💵
The staff consisted of lots of young boys who seemed inexperienced with the animals. It is clear that the most “attractive” and healthy birds are situated at the start of the park and towards the back are the birds that live in dirty sheds deprived of stimulation, light and cleanliness. 🦢
There are no signs of positive research being conducted here and it seems that the money goes towards the fancy resort next door instead of looking after the birds 🧐🧐
‼️ Please DONT visit this place. We left feeling sad and guilty for enjoying the first half of the park before we saw the true colours of @birdsparkhambantota ‼️
