Each Spring and Fall, Friends and the Grand Rapids Forestry Department rally the community to plant trees!
🌳The goal in 2024 is to plant 15,000 new trees throughout the city as part of the ongoing goal to reach 40% tree canopy!
Increasing tree canopy cover has numerous benefits for the local ecosystem. Here are several data-backed reasons why:
Air Quality: Trees absorb pollutants like carbon dioxide, improving air quality.
Temperature Regulation: Tree shade reduces urban heat and energy consumption for cooling.
Biodiversity: More trees mean more habitat for wildlife.
Stormwater Management: Trees help absorb and slow down rainwater, reducing flooding.
Soil Health: Tree roots prevent erosion and enrich soil.
Human Health: Access to green spaces with trees reduces stress and improves well-being.
