A specialist in ranching, Western painter Vicki Catapano was trained in the buckaroo tradition using the style of horsemanship from the Spanish Conquistadors that can be found in Nevada and California. Vicki Catapano understands horsemanship from the highly trained 'spur bit' technique and she names her 6 x 8 oil painting accordingly. The "Song of the Sage" title refers to the 'cricket' (a roller in the bit that the horse rolls with it’s tongue) which makes a pretty sound. When the horse plays with the roller (cricket) it produces saliva and this in turn keeps the horse's mouth very sensitive, and thus a very minimal “signal” or touch is needed for the trained horse to respond. Vicki also says this handmade spade bit is most likely a trophy bit from one of the historic regional buckaroo 'Californios' show. It has “The Californios” engraved on the creek piece. The sage refers to the topography of this Nevada Buckaroo, particularly the high desert sage indigenous to the western states.
