Work In Progress. Phew, this hollowing out business is a real thing!!! I had to work out where to cut open this poor woman(who started out as a coil built vase, but no, the vase did not want to be a vase but a female figure! Again!) So, with all the sculpting and morphing she has now gone through the process of being hollowed and there is a good chance that bits may fall off or explode in the kiln. But hey - I’m just learning!!!! She is pretty tough though as her hairstyle, not pictured yet, is a mohawk. This drawing contains descriptions the sculpture in the video, Pasteurised Future, by restricting myself to working with five-word sentences. The walking stick is an object of loneliness and limitation. Here two are brought together forming not only a pair, but also one understanding creature that observes life with explosive eyes. In our efforts to defend ourselves against the inevitable, we clutch onto humanised wood. The sentences in this drawing read: Camel ribs compliment walking sticks. They dance upon willow branch. Walking sticks grow virgin tones. Ribs sing artificiality and extinction Creature emerges from hoar-frost. Head to tail peculiar animal. Organic body dressed in synthetics. Ghost branches breed gravel skin. The aged everyday foreign bark. Shapes balance a fragile reality. Alien plant seeds second-hand wood. Linear forms feel sinuously drawn. Arched legs sprout life preservers. An icy synthetic hybrid time. Sugar-candy alchemised pastel memory. Faux ripened light painterly object. Endangered historical hook flowers thrive. The Modern recently added “I’m Not Perfect,” a 2014 work by artist Jeffery Gibson (b. 1972, Colorado Springs, Colorado), to its permanent collection. Currently representing the United States at the 60th Venice Biennale, Gibson champions overlooked narratives to create reflections of contemporary life. The artist, who is of Choctaw and Cherokee descent, fuses Indigenous cultures and histories with references to pop culture, art history, and ideas about gender. This amalgamation of source material is evident throughout his installations, paintings, and sculptures. “I’m Not Perfect” was included in the artist’s 2018–19 retrospective “This Is the Day” and is part of his punching bag series. Gibson intricately adorns the found boxing equipment with glass beads and tin jingles. An object typically associated with aggression, action, and emotional release is transformed into a multilayered reexamination of masculinity and Indigenous ceremonies. WHO ARE THE ARTISTS IN THE STUDIO? Mona Hatoum 1952 - Mona Hatoum is an artist, born in Lebanon of Palestinian descent. She grew up in Lebanon and studied graphic design, but found the work of advertising unsatisfying. Whilst on a visit to London in 1975 the Lebanese Civil War broke out, forcing her into exile. There, she stayed in London and studied at the Slade School of Art. Hatoum's work has considered of sculpture/installation and performance, as well as audio. She uses aspects of her own life, the domestic and the body to demonstrate themes of conflict, displacement and violence. Cages, grids and domestic household objects are recurring features of her work, leaving the viewer with an experience that is psychologically charged.

If you've been following me for awhile you know that the overwhelming majority of my work is breaded with oatmeal. This of course creates a lot of empty oatmeal containers. What to do with them? Years back I created an installation piece out of them. The results were a good first try and I may revisit something similar again, but recently I've been trying to think of ways to use these containers as standalone sculptures. The above is a recent new attempt at having a go at this idea. There will be others to come in the future. Shall Not Be Moved #1 The installation that concluded my Southern Studies Fellowship featured 7 fabric forms. These forms were made of rattan, house paint, yarn, hula hoops, floral foam, and used bedsheets sourced from Haven of Rest Thrift Store in Honea Path SC, located just down the street from the former Chiquola Mill. On September 6th, 1934 the superintendent of Chiquola Mill, Dan Beachman, directed strikebreakers to shoot into the crowd of striking workers taking part in the Uprising of '34. 30 strikers were injured and 7 died, Claude Cannon, Lee Crawford, Ira Davis, E.M. Bill Knight, Maxie Paterson, C.R. Rucker, and Thomas Yarborough. Besides being the superintendent, Beacham was Honea Path's mayor and magistrate. Justice never came for the victims and the silence resulting from this massacre has been inherited. See work by Trenton Doyle Hancock in Impact: Contemporary Artists at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, on view at the Sarasota Art Museum in Florida through July 7, 2024. This exhibition hopes to expand upon conventional ideas of art’s impact on our daily lives through the presentation of recent works made by 10 U.S.-based artists. Hancock is featured alongside Diana Al-Hadid, Sanford Biggers, Chitra Ganesh, Todd Gray, Michelle Lopez, Ted Riederer, John Sims, Kukuli Velarde, and William Villalongo. A key factor these 10 artists share in common: over the past two decades, each has accepted an invitation to attend an artist residency at the historic beachfront campus of the Hermitage Artist Retreat on Manasota Key—a unique experience that contributed to each of their creative processes in a variety of ways. An even more evident thread running through their works is a collective desire to explore and reveal the ways in which art can represent concepts and situations that reflect and engage their viewers’ (and their own) experience of the world around them. glow in the dark wildlife!! 🐌🍄🐸🌺🌳🌟 Sadly I didn’t have enough time to include the UV light and glow in the dark features for the final exhibition, but I’m glad I fooled about and painted parts of my sculptures in blue and green glow in the dark paint. Finally compiling photos as I update my website. Here is a little bit about the work Untethered. From 7 sculpted frames 27 glass iterations were created. Elements of birds, keys, ribbons, trees, flowers, and patterns fade from recognizable to crystallized distortion, or recombine and migrate to other frames as multiple shadows layer on the wall behind. The details of our memories float free of reality, losing clarity or finding their way into recollections of other times and places. Memories morph, creating hybrid remembrances, and frayed connections to the past drift without anchor. So at last my 3 bronze sections of my spear-shaped stick “Kuusisaari Totem” were now welded together- so there was brass brushing and lots of smoothing and polishing -basically hours getting ready for enhancing the finish with patina….
