Today we're celebrating Ferron Murphy, who has served as a nurse at Jill's House since August of 2023. Her hobbies include reading and needlepointing and playing with her dog. Thailand provides free education, from primary school to college, for each and every person with disabilities, yet the reality paints a stark picture. Less than 10% of people with disabilities even get around to completing their high school, let alone being gainfully employed. . Even though Thailand has implemented the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Act to ensure all persons with disabilities are employed, only 6.2% of them are actually part of the workforce. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and our team at Anderson Center Consulting and Training has a TUESDAY TIP that might be useful! Autistic and neurodivergent individuals, like all of us, often become very stressed when experiencing sensory overload. There are actually many ways to help "deactivate" the central nervous system - among them: deep breaths. If a child is unable to follow directions, perhaps model the behavior of breathing in and out slowly over the course of two minutes - inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth (have the young person blow on his/her/their hand on the out breath). If breathwork feels like it's not working well, another option is to go for a "mindful" nature walk, pointing out the colors you see and the sounds you hear along the way. If the child is able to verbalize similar responses to the environment, encourage that he/she/they communicate those observations Mindfulness can really help reduce stress, which can make life so much brighter. May children, parents, and caregivers alike all take some time on a regular basis to enjoy meditative activities that soothe the soul! Good Tuesday Morning and this day April 30th is the last day of Autism Awareness Month. As it is the last day of Autism Awareness Month I want to address what this means. I made this to oppose the use of the R word. I don’t even want to tell you what it is but it is a very terrible and foul name for those with intellectual disabilities (including ones with autism) (mainly non verbal autism). Sadly even many scientists would say this word and even some textbooks would too. If you look at my highlights below my profile in the one that says “important” you’d see that I mentioned that my nutrition textbook had that word. Share this post and spread awareness.
