📸 Erinnerungen an Florida. Alligatoren in Florida. Diese beeindruckenden Echsen sind wahre Allesfresser: Zu ihrer Nahrung gehören Fische, kleine Säugetiere, Schildkröten und Vögel. Obwohl sie an Land behäbig wirken, erreichen sie im Wasser Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 32 km/h und schwimmen nahezu lautlos, indem sie selbst kleinste Schwingungen im Wasser wahrnehmen. An Land können Alligatoren bei der Jagd auf kurzen Strecken bis zu 50 km/h schnell werden. Sie klettern sogar manchmal auf Bäume, wenn es keinen flachen Zugang zum Ufer gibt, auch wenn dies selten vorkommt. Alligatoren-Weibchen sind fürsorgliche Mütter, die bis zu 70 Eier an Uferböschungen legen und ihre Nester eifersüchtig vor Fressfeinden bewachen. Die Babys messen bei der Geburt etwa 20 cm und bleiben mehrere Wochen unter der Obhut ihrer Mutter. Sol & Apollo’s babies have moved on and they gave us a fantastic experience for 7 days before moving on to the next phase of their life. Two had fallen to the ground, prompting Jessie and me to intervene since the tree doesn’t have anything easy for them to climb onto from the bottom, and cats were surrounding them. Shortly after placing them back on the tree, they quickly learned and reached Sol in just a few hours. Seeing such rare plants in the wild always feels like pure magic ✨️ Walking though the swamp, I could recognize this funky looking airplant with chalky leaves was something unique that I hadn't seen before, but I wasn't super positive what it was. But with some help from the Florida Plant Atlas and confirmation from @thorny_wanders , I found out that it is nodding catopsis (Catopsis nutans), the rarest of our native airplants! This species is found in other places throught the Caribbean and Central & South America, but South Florida is the northernmost part of their range. In Florida, they are only found within Collier County; a study in 2002 only located one population of them, and a 2007 publication estimated there were less than 100 in the population. Conservation efforts have been made to reintroduce some into the swamps, but they are still extremely rare and coming across this one by chance was incredibly lucky. C. nutans is one of three Catopsis species native to Florida. The other two, C. floribunda and C. berteroniana (one of very few carnivorous bromeliads!), are both more common than this one, but still quite rare in the state. All three are considered endangered in our state because of a number of threats: habitat destruction and hydrologic changes, rampant poaching, and especially the invasive Mexican bromeliad weevil.
