The remains of any wilderness in this stretch of desert badlands are primarily found in petrified form. . Had such a fun time the other day exploring Cherry Creek Trail with my friend Jeremy. My legs were fried and pulled a muscle in my right quad from the day b4 riding the Continental Divide Trail with the girls. But, my WORD is my BOND and when I say I'm getting it done or showing up, there's no excuses! Jeremy has really been wanting to show me this place for a while now and we planned it out a week b4. That morning I kouldnt put any pressure down with my right leg, but my word is my bond and texted Jeremy if he could lug my fat heavy Hog up to the trail Kuz I was not missing out! Damn was it worth it and only reason I made it up was kuz that sweet pedal assist 😍 The views were majestic and I kan't wait to go back and take the girls! Possibly the most noticeable sight beyond the entrance to Fort Selden are the Robledo Mountains. The mountains take their name from Pedro Robledo, a Spanish soldier who accompanied Don Juan de Oñate into New Mexico in 1598. When they reached this area along their north-bound journey, Robledo died and was buried in the vicinity. The 275-square-mile gypsum dune field of White Sands National Park and the surrounding area is the largest of its kind in the world. Gypsum is unlike silica sand because it doesn’t absorb much heat from the sun and stays cool and easy to walk on, making hiking easy in flip flops or even bare feet. White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base surround the park, and the strong military presence in the area is not only noticeable, but can sometimes interfere with guests visiting the park. I got a feel for that firsthand during my visit when I found out about the recent F-16 crash in the park that caused the closure more than half of the accessible areas indefinitely. Only the Playa Trail and the Dune Life Nature Trail are currently open due to the crash. Aside from that recent incident, there are times when the park can be abruptly closed for missile testing, and less than half of the park’s area is regularly accessible to the general public on any given day because the other half is a “zone of cooperative use” with the military and is closed to the public. (Within that zone exists an area of particular geologic importance for the dunes, Lake Lucero.) Despite the few drawbacks, the scenery is well worth the visit.
