With lungs for breathing air, and some species living their entire adult lives in the water, Frog a creature of duality. Frog is also a rain bringing creature in Zuni. The amphibian often makes appearances on pottery, most notably on prayer bowls to ask for the blessing of rain or snow. Frog (Dakkya) is also associated with cleansing, and taking a moment to examine our lives when they appear can help us identify where we may need some extra self-care to replenish our energy reserves. Feeling overwhelmed, overworked, or overloaded may be a sign that it's time to bathe in the healing waters of Frog’s teachings, and take a moment to cleanse yourself of whatever is oppressing your consciousness. Frog medicine gives us support and energy when we need it, like the revitalizing rain and teaches us to balance the conflicting aspects of our lives. I made this painting 15 years ago in my final semester in college. It was springtime, I was obsessed with greens & blues, and I was limiting my color palette in new ways. It was one of my most prolific times creatively, and I still can't believe how much I accomplished in just a couple months. But it's looking at this piece that really transports me. Lately, I can't get this painting & its title out of my head. I keep asking myself the title question, which is somehow less annoying than when I'm asked "where have you been" or "what have you been up to"... these are not bad questions but they bother me because I don't know how to answer them. For one, surely nobody wants to know my honest answer so I stumble with what to say. I've been.... gardening? I've been maintaining. I've been grieving. I've been struggling. But the where? It feels like I haven't gone anywhere at all, but....I have been here. Isn't that what matters? That we're still here? So, where did I go? All the pieces in this series were made with charcoal during the winter. Normally I get really sad about the cold & lessened sunlight in winter but working on this series was a way for me to cope with the changing seasons & face my fears about change. This drawing shows the last light of day--what I call "the witching hour"--peaking through clouds & the skeleton of a pecan tree. The west mesa over-looking the valley where I live is seen in the bottom quarter of the image. She was incredible, and I tried to visit for all of her birthdays since our birthdays were just a few days apart. The last few visits, I made some paintings en route since I wasn't driving, & I consider these to be "plein air" paintings--even though they weren't technically painted "in the open air" they were still made from directly observing a particular place in time. I made this piece in 2014 a few weeks after getting home from a 6-week solo road trip across the Western US. During that trip, I spent at least 3 weeks on the Oregon coast in Lincoln City, where I frequently walked the beaches & explored Siletz Bay. I was particularly fascinated with the driftwood here. As someone from the desert, I was at first so puzzled by all this wood on the beach, whole trunks from other places washed up on the shore after being tumbled in the ocean. I loved their shapes & their visual mystery. I've made several pieces about the driftwood, but this one was recently beautifully framed after I'd forgotten about it for a little bit. And it's now available in my shop!
