UNFINISHED BUSINESS...As part of my home gallery reorganization, I've also been going through my storage area for unfinished work, deciding what to keep and what can be sacrificed. Some flat tires just can't be patched and the stretchers can thus be repurposed, but other unfinished pieces are worth pushing forward, and he is one of the latter. This fella was at Santa Fe's Spanish Market and I was very taken with his attire--isn't it glorious?! I got pretty far into this painting, and decided that it was too wide so I will narrow it to the tape lines. And the next step is to do something more with the environment, the Santa Fe Plaza. I am planning on finishing this painting this summer! All of my figure paintings are of people I have actually seen performing or out and about during the 20 years we've been living in the Southwest. "Beyond The Sea" Chalk pastel on paper April 2009 ~6 ft. Ć 10 ft. This is one of the last pieces I made before graduating college in May 2009. I worked on it secretly in my garage, with this huge piece of paper taped to the floor & 5 sets of chalk pastels torn through. It was included in my solo BFA exhibit at a tattoo parlor/gallery, & has been rolled up in storage ever since. All my work is based on my own experience, & this one is based on a detail from a painting I'd made several months before. Someone suggested I try this as an exercise, & this is one of several pieces I've made based on previous work. "Beyond The Sea" is about geologic time in the desert where I'm from. Not only are we literally "beyond the sea" geographically in the present-day, this land was previously, several times throughout history, a sea-bed. This piece asks us to look beyond the sea, beyond the place where we are, the moments we're in, & consider geologic time. All the pieces in this series were made with charcoal during the winter. Normally I get really sad about the cold & lessened sunlight in winter but working on this series was a way for me to cope with the changing seasons & face my fears about change. This drawing shows the last light of day--what I call "the witching hour"--peaking through clouds & the skeleton of a pecan tree. The west mesa over-looking the valley where I live is seen in the bottom quarter of the image. She was incredible, and I tried to visit for all of her birthdays since our birthdays were just a few days apart. The last few visits, I made some paintings en route since I wasn't driving, & I consider these to be "plein air" paintings--even though they weren't technically painted "in the open air" they were still made from directly observing a particular place in time.
