Introducing Safe Passages - 16”x12”- mixed media on toned paper. This is 3rd in the series of drawing where I am inspired by references from past projects. I am working symmetrically as well as layering the images to create a pictorial landscape. These images represent experiences I’ve had which have helped me grow and develop my sense of self. They are Safe Passages that I have traversed.

This tiger subspecies is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the sixth-largest island in the world. . The Sumatran Tigers are also the smallest and darkest of all the world’s tigers weighing up to about 140 kg male and 110 kg for the females. They are formidable predators, at the top of the food chain and are able to take down an animal as large as a gaur (the largest species of wild cattle), tapir or baby elephant, and will eat smaller prey such as monkeys, birds and fish, but wild pigs and deer make up the bulk of their diet! Introducing, “Reach Out”- 12”x16”. It is the latest in a series of mixed media drawings where I am using previous reference photos and juxtaposing them both symmetrically but also layering them above each other to create almost a visual landscape. These drawings came about from a quick vision I had of a vertical drawing that had a symmetry to it. You never know when inspiration will strike!! The drawings are created on toned Strathmore paper. 1st I did a rough drawing in pencil, brushed on cold press ground in the areas I’d like to have color, allowed that to dry and painted those areas with watercolor, then did my pen and ink drawing, highlighting it with white gel pens over the entirety. Then I went back into the drawing with colored pencils or gel pens (just a touch!) to draw out certain areas.

“Sunset’s Sharks”. -swipe 4- I adore sharks. Having the chance to come face to face with these great predators, especially the white shark, was mind-blowing. South Africa provides some of the most awe-inspiring playgrounds for sharks, and some of the biggest in the world. . While it was observed that many great whites traveled East as killer whales were preying upon them on the southern coast, “Spotters” are now seeing many return to the coast. In return, safe netting is being put up so people can swim right off the beaches in a measured area to avoid any shark attacks. At sunset, they safely pull up the nets. . Sharks play an important role as apex predators in the ecosystem by maintaining the species below them in the food chain and serving as an indicator for ocean health. They help to remove the weak and the sick.
