GROW UP! Read It: 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 How do you know if you’re growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ? How do you know if you’re moving along at the proper rate of speed given the time you’ve known Christ? According to the Apostle Paul, you need to take a close look at your diet and your discipline. The first three verses of 1 Corinthians 3 tell us that what you are able to digest and the way you behave say a lot about your spiritual maturity or lack thereof. Just as it’s possible for our physical development to be arrested and stunted, Paul says it’s possible for Christians to have arrested spiritual development. It’s even possible for Christ’s disciples to start looking and acting like “mere men,” that is, non-Christians. Now some professing Christians look like non-Christians because they actually are. One of my great concerns as a pastor is people who only think they are saved and use the excuse that they are carnal to justify their sins. Joining a church or signing a card does not a Christian make. But there are genuine disciples who have been born again and aren’t living like it. If you came to the nursery at our church in Dallas and saw baby bottles and baby food jars, saw kids fighting over toys or whatever, you wouldn’t think twice on it. Babies need milk and baby food and toys. But if you walked into a class of college-age young people or a class of married couples and saw people drinking milk out of baby bottles and fussing and fighting, you’d first double-check the class name on the door, and then you’d probably check out! Well, that’s what the Corinthian church looked like spiritually. And sad to say, that’s what a lot of churches today look like. Jealousy, strife, and immaturity are as alive and well in the church of the twentieth century as they were in the church of the first century. Do these verses describe you? I sincerely hope not. So it is, that the consequence of the Gospel Truth understood, believed, and acted upon, is the giving of “a sound mind”. This aspect is brought out again by the Master, in the healing of Legion: “they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed of the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid” (Mark.5:15). Here was a man who had severe mental health problems. He was not “in his right mind,” but was mentally disturbed. This case illustrates how that demon-possession was a way of describing mental aberrations, and not the consequence of fallen rebel angels - these were illnesses that could be healed. Hence Peter described: “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed with the devil; for God was with him. The natural spiritual state of mankind is to be of an unstable mind. Believing in all kinds of superstitions and doctrines of men, it seems that the majority will believe anything but the True Gospel! But the preaching of the Word can transform the minds of those who believe it. The natural state is to have a carnal mind, whereas believers of the Truth have a spiritual mind (see Rom.8:6-7). Their minds must be changed, as Paul wrote elsewhere: “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Rom.12:2). The danger of conformity is that we can become like everyone else – the perishing state of carnally minded men. Some wrongly believe that God is an immaterial spirit, without form, body, or parts; with no fixed abode, but is in all places, and in all things. In truth, God is everywhere by His Spirit power (see Psalm 139), but that does not exclude the fact that He has a material existence, and a specific dwelling place. Today’s verse shows: He “only hath” underived “immortality”, “dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto” - which implies a particular place of residence, albeit inaccessible to mortal man; although there are angels “that.. do always behold the face” of the Farther. (Mat.18:10) The Psalmist also speaks in a similar vein: “The Lord looketh from heaven, he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth” (Psa.33:13-14). This states a specific place, styled “His Habitation”. That habitation is said to be “heaven,” which accords with the Lord’s prayer: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name…”(Mat.6:9). God’s precise bodily form is revealed in the doctrine that: “in the image of God created He him” “in the image of God made He man”(Gen.1:27; 9:6). “Men, which are made after the similitude of God”(James 3:9). “Man… is the image and glory of God”(1Cor.11:7). The immortalised “flesh and bones” body of Christ (Lk.24:39) “is the image of God”(2Cor.4:4), “the express image of His person”(Heb.1:3) It is vital to know God in these things as Jesus says: “this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent” (Jno.17:3). 1 Chronicles 22:17-19 “Need for a Team!” What God desired to do in Israel necessitated not only a healthy king, but a healthy leadership team willing to participate in building God’s house. “David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon,…” (18a) He first looks to the faithfulness of God’s presence to work on behalf of Israel to bring them into His promises. Their victories were not attributed to their great skills, but to God’s presence and participation with them in their battles. So, the key to their future success would be rooted in this same basic truth. Therefore, David commanded them accordingly: “Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise, therefore, and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built for the name of the LORD.” (19) God does not need us, but He does desire to use us to accomplish His desires for His glory. Only in the posture of seeking God are we able to accomplish this great project for the purpose of God’s glory! We do not labor according to our abilities, but out of a dependent relationship with Him because what we are doing is not for our name, but for the name of the LORD! Today’s reading: Proverbs 8, 9, and 10. Do you want to be wise? Fear God. Do you want more understanding and insight? Get to know the Holy One named Jesus. So, what does it mean to fear God? It isn’t like a horror movie. Actually, fearing God is all about respecting and revering Him. It’s about honoring Him as God and submitting to His authority. It looks like obedience. Ok, so how do we get to know Jesus? I grow my relationship with Jesus in three ways. First, I try to be consistent with my Bible reading. All Scripture points to Jesus, so I want to increase my understanding. Second, I converse with Jesus in prayer. This is two-way communication. I speak to Him and spend time listening. I have never heard God speak out loud, but I “hear” His voice in the Bible. Or, I receive a deeper peace about my prayer requests. Finally, I try to serve and love the people Jesus loves, which is literally everyone! We can know Jesus more by living and loving like He did. TORTOISES AND HARES Read It: 1 Corinthians 2:12-16 Why is it that some people who have been saved for a relatively short period of time seem to mature faster, grow stronger, and move far�ther down the road of discipleship than other people who have been saved for many years? At least part of the answer is in the discipleship formula I gave you yes�terday. Disciples who break from the starting blocks with a burst of speed and never look back are going to cover a lot of ground in a hurry. You see, if I’m running, and you’re walking, you may start out before I do, but I will arrive at the finish line before you do. Now I know the old story of the tortoise and the hare as well as you do. But remember, the hare lost the race because he kept fooling around and looking back, wast�ing his God-given ability. He would have made a lousy disciple. Make no mistake about it. Jesus doesn’t play favorites among His dis�ciples. It’s true that we differ in gifts and abilities, but the Bible says we all have the mind of Christ. We all have His Spirit. We can all reach the level of spiritual maturity described in today’s reading. So when you see Christians who can’t get their marriages or moral lives together, who can’t control habits or their tongues, who can’t seem to get a handle on their thought processes, who can’t ever seem to get past the nagging problems and upsets that keep them in the dumps—when you see Christians like this, it’s not because God is playing favorites. The problem is that their discipleship mathematics are out of whack. They have forgotten that rate multiplied by time equals distance. The Corinthians were a good example of this problem. Today, tomorrow, and Friday we are going to examine this classic passage in chapters 2 and 3, which talks about where these believers were and where they should have been in their Christian growth.
