Pit Stop by Ellis Mae 3.5 ⭐️ Hot Honey🌶 John is busting his butt to make a better life for himself and avoid his feelings at all costs, while Isamu is managing his PTSD and preparing for his dream adventure. Slowly they form a tentative friendship, but is this just a pit stop or the beginning of a long journey? I loved all the diverse queer and BIPOC representation and the found family relationships these guys have with their friends. I liked how food was used to show care and connection, and the descriptions had my mouth watering. I'm not sure why, but I sometines felt disconnected from these MCs. The writing was pretty good, but I kept getting pulled out of the story. Both John and Isamu are dealing with some hard stuff, which gives the book a more somber tone, but I liked how the characters confront the difficulty and support each other through it. There is a bit of sudden resolution at the end, but I think these guys deserved a break from all the tragedy. I enjoyed it overall, and if you like emotionally charged found family romances with queer and BIPOC themes at the forefront, you'll probably enjoy it as well. Which is a good thing because there are a lot of character perspectives! I was able to easily distinguish between the characters. Most of these characters were unlikeable. I did not realize this was the second in a series when I started reading it. Only realized that when I went to put it in Goodreads. This book does seem to give a good background for what previously happened. So I didn’t feel like I was missing out on much. This is a retelling of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s point of view. The author, who is Black, says that he brought in family history, stories passed down, as did his co-author. Some stories are not in the history books, and that is how the stories of families travel through the generations, when things were not written down. I have always hated stories where the characters are made to speak in dialogue that is not natural for them, that it makes them the other, to whomever is telling the story. Look, how ignorant they are, that they dont’ speak proper English. Kate Beaton gave a wonderful lecture on this very topic where her people of Kate Breton were made to look like country bumpkins by the writers from the main part of Canada. The only time that Jim talks in dialect, is when he is trying to hide from white men who would do him harm if he showed intelligence. I love this retelling. It makes more sense, and the story is told in the present, in the near past, and when the story took place. That may sound odd, but it all works well together. Instead I got something much better - 4 women with real life complexities! The pacing was generally good but felt a bit rushed at the end for me. ✨ Book Review ✨ Private Rites by Julia Armfield Swipe for synopsis! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Well I know I just posted about a potential BOTY contender, but here comes another one. My first read by Julia Armfield, and WOW, the hype is very well-deserved. End of times/climate change settings are usually hit-or-miss for me, sometimes leaning on trope-y stereotypes that take some of the punch out of the message. Armfield’s setting here is one of the best I’ve ever read. Bleak, foreboding, utterly dreadful, but also incredibly, depressingly realistic. I think sometimes there tends to be imagined this absolute chaotic, quick descent into apocalyptic circumstances but sadly, what Armfield presents is probably the most realistic: a slow sinking, many folks continuing about their days as normal, going to work as usual, while the world ends around them. While “The City” is quite literally its own character here and is wonderfully done, our three main characters - Isla, Irene & Agnes - are also incredibly well-written. Isla drove me a bit insane, and I had quite a soft spot for both Irene and Agnes (especially Irene, I felt a bit of a kinship with her, to be honest), but all 3 are so fully realized that I truly had empathy for them all. Plus I’m a sucker for complex, dysfunctional family dynamics. Ultimately, while this is a slow burn horror novel that pays off with a horrifying and creepy finale, it’s also a story of queer love, familial love, the desperation, hope and maybe even salvation found in love during the worst of times. I adored the banter and teasing between Nico and Ramsey, how she called him every N name under the sun, and I literally laughed out loud several times (star spangled banner anyone?)! Ramsey is a ball of fire, but I’m sure she had to be growing up the youngest of seven, all older brothers. And what a family they have! I loved the dynamics and love that shone through the pages and also all the good spirited teasing and competition! Nico is such a good man, and his love for Ramsey is slowly revealed in all its little nuances. This was such a good brothers best friend, fake dating, enemies to lovers romance and I just loved their love! Watching the doubt, heckle, give in, run away, and have all their own separate realizations before coming together was just so sweet! This book was SO amazing! The beginning was a little slow, but quickly picked up and kept my attention the whole way through. I really enjoyed the pacing between travel, meeting each character, learning a little about their kingdom/area, each character having their own troubles (physical and emotional), and the constant worry of being found by Ragnar, the tyrant and evil ruler. The world building and character description was so vivid, but never had me skimming sections to get it over with. This book played like a movie in my head with the way Christine was able to paint a picture with words. There were so many emotional moments. I cried the majority of the time either from the characters past issues, current situations going on, or the shocks and twists that some characters went through. I never suspected anything like what was thrown at me and my heart BROKE for those characters. This is the perfect read for those who enjoy LotR, ToG, Godkiller, and an epic fantasy quest filled with found family, elemental and music magic, finding self-worth, and serious twists and shocks! ARC REVIEW 📖THE MAIN CHARACTER📖 Author: Jaclyn Goldis Genre: Thriller/Mystery Pub Date: May 21, 2024 Rating: 3⭐️ First and foremost, HAPPY CATURDAY! This post brought to you by the main character in my life: Korra 🩵 The Main Character started strong in the beginning and seemed very promising. Starting off with a mysterious death and then going back three days to recount the events leading to that death had me excited. Alternating between 5 POVs, it seemed to have the makings of a fun murder mystery thriller. Despite having a strong start, the pacing drastically slowed in the middle a bit too much for my liking. I thought a couple days had gone by in the story, but as I read, I realized all that I had read had taken place in one day. The pacing and action didn’t pick up until closer to the end of the book. Unfortunately, I felt the story ended quite abruptly and didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Another issue I was having while reading was differentiating between the characters when the POV would switch. I’d find myself having to look at the chapter to remember which POV I was reading. What I did enjoy about this book were the descriptions of the Orient Express and of Italy. The setting is painted in such lavish detail, I could really get a sense of the expensive and ornate details of the train. And the images of the Italian towns were done so well, I could easily picture myself standing in these settings. Goodness...what a way to start a new series! As soon as this book was announced, I was a tad nervous to read it. I was hoping the suspense was realistic and the portrayal of Anson’s former profession was accurate. I am happy to say both were true and I loved this book so much! And I was also blindsided by the villian, which is always fun. We get glimpses of Anson in the previous series, but I really enjoyed his story. I’m such a sucker for a grumpy hero and Anson is the epitome of that. He hides all his softness underneath the surface and Rhodes is the perfect match to bring him out of his shell. Rhodes is just good to the core. She sees the good in all situations and is incredibly kind (to both people and animals alike). Not only did I love seeing her fall for Anson, I also equally loved her relationship with her brother Shep and how they looked out for each other. Both Anson and Rhodes are “damaged” and dealing with a lot of trauma, so they have equal footing when it comes to life. While their approaches to healing are completely opposite, the pair has great banter and that leads to so much tension between the pair. Never backing down even when he puts his walls up, Rhodes would bite back at Anson’s grumpiness so perfectly. She also pushes Anson hard to open up to her and dares him to give in to his own desires. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Rhodes’ found family of foster siblings. I was instantly enamored with each and every one of them and I cannot wait for all of their stories! They’re all so protective of each other, but they also can give each other crap. Their group text messages, along with the clever changing names of the chat, had me cackling. And at the helm of the crew are Nora and Lolli and those two are an absolute hoot. I will gladly accept Lolli’s dick flower art any day! FRAGILE SANCTUARY is a brother’s best friend, enemies to lovers age gap steamy romance filled with found family, forced proximity, and a grumpy, broken hero. When I saw it on NetGalley, I requested immediately and I’m so happy that I did. This is so action packed (exactly like the first one) and I loved reading everything unfold. The new characters that were introduced in this book irritated me but I loved how detailed they were and how much backstory we got, especially for them being new. I love how we dive even more into Winter and Syd’s relationship. All of the losses (ifykyk) hurt me so bad and the way it was written made me so emotional. The first half of the book basically sets up the second half but once the action hits, it hits hard. I read the second part of this so quickly because it was addicting. I need a third book now. The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood 5/5🌟 I was expecting a funny cute romcom which it is but I was not expecting this to hit as hard as it did. Thank you Goodreads giveaways and @berkleyromance for the arc! I don’t want to give too much away as this isn’t realized yet but overall, I need everyone to read this book. We have so many fun romance tropes, as one of our characters is a romance lover, and many references to beloved romcoms. We also have hilarious shenanigans that I experienced a little second hand embarrassment from but all turned out for the best. The cast of characters is unique and lovable and I loved the found family dynamics. The ending hit so close to home for me - I cried so much but I’m also a very sensitive person. ✨✨Blind Spot ✨✨ By: Maggie Smith Pub Date: May 21, 2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Blind Spot was a bit of a slow burn for me that picked up part of the way through. Then I didn’t want to put it down! Though, I will say, that opening chapter, WOW. What a way to start a book! It was a very interesting plotline, an assistant district attorney has a stalker that ends up dead and she is framed for his murder. There is good character development in this book. Of course, there were unlikeable characters. But what’s a book without them? I was suspicious of everyone! I enjoyed getting glimpses of the past just so we could better understand the present. I felt the anxiety and tension Rachel had as she tried to navigate everything while still keeping herself and her daughter safe. And it just amped up as the book went on! There were a few twists that I did not see coming. Overall, this was a good book that I enjoyed. If you love legal thrillers or suspenseful novels, this is the book for you! 3.25⭐️- While I prefer romcoms I usually don’t shy away from a romance, especially when the synopsis sounds cute and flirty. I’m pretty good with most tropes, but the one I simply cannot stand is miscommunication, which is one of the tropes in this book. Emerson and Theo met at their freshman orientation of high school when they were both 14 and instantly clicked- as best friends. During their 4 years of high school their friendship deepened until it morphed into more than friends. They made a pact that if neither were married by the time they turned 28 they’d marry each other. Ten years since high school has passed and at 28 Emerson is now a supermodel and a household name and Theo is a photographer for a Target like store. They haven’t spoken since they were 18 and when Emerson’s reminder app pops up reminding her if she’s not married she’s to marry Theo, she quickly gets herself assigned to Theo’s latest shoot, even though career wise it’s well beneath her. Theo too has been thinking of her, but when someone close to Emerson tells Theo she has no desire to rekindle things with her, he’s confused as to why she’s suddenly on location. The next 5 days are filled with reconnection and confusion as Emerson tries to win Theo back and Theo tries to be respectful of her feelings. This is Betty Cayouette’s debut novel and as a debut it’s quite good. While I enjoyed the writing, I felt like the story dragged on, but that’s because there wasn’t an end of the miscommunication until practically the second to last chapter. I would have preferred to see that get resolved earlier than 90% through. I really loved the characters Ms. Cayouette created and I look forward to seeing what else she writes down the road. Gin is feisty, a protector and caretaker, doesn’t give in easily, smart, and unknowingly seductive. Soren is the rational capo, younger brother, also the caretaker, but when he loves he loves hard and protects those at all costs. Loyalty is everything. When these two are together, sparks fly, tensions rise, and banter is traded. But, for Gin, it’s a hate she thinks she feels, with Soren, it’s an unexplainable mix of attraction and annoyance, but always one of caring. I loved watching both Wren and Boreas (the MCs) grow and work through their vices as the story went on. I also really enjoyed seeing the growth of their relationship. My Rating:⭐️ -Spoiler Free Review- Here Lies a Vengeful Bitch is a dnf for me at 29% page 82, these characters and the mystery in general aren’t holding my attention at all. The characters are boring, nothing stands out about them at all except the cringy and annoying way that they speak to one another. Annie is unlikeable and uninteresting to read about, I found myself not really intrigued to find out what happened to her at all. We do get some thrilling/mystery elements every chapter to try and keep us hooked but the bits just aren’t delivering for me at all. I found the twins and especially Sam to be annoying, the way he’s constantly calling the Annie “baby” despite hardly knowing her makes me cringe every time I have to read it. I know the twins were probably written in a way to be cutesy with there “talking in riddles” type of thing but I find it to be really annoying. This debut novel is the story of many generations of a family that starts out in India, they flee to other countries as the conflicts in each place make it impossible for them to stay. They make lives in these places, and become activists and shopkeepers. They face horrific challenges that test the strength of family. It is beautifully written. But it is very long, for me seemed like it was too much.
