The first day of June, 1533. Westminster Abbey. The coronation of Anne Boleyn as Queen of England. An excerpt from the novel Truth Endures: Anne Boleyn’s Memoirs. …”We entered the great Abbey of St Peter. At once its mysterious beauty overwhelmed me; a veritable forest of stone, its ribbed vaulting soaring heavenward. We glided past ancient tombs, their ominous presence reminding me of my mortality, even on this day. Smoke rose and swirled from a multitude of torches and candles, and the sharp bite of incense burned my nostrils. Lightheaded, I drifted in a semi-hypnotic state while the glorious voices raised in melodic chant faded until all I heard was a buzzing, as if my head was filled with a swarm of bees. I feared I might faint, but somehow my feet kept moving ever forward as I approached the High Altar where I was assisted up several steps and seated in the gold-draped Coronation Chair-the very same venerable relic in which Monarchs of the realm had been crowned for hundreds of years…”. #queens #anne #anneboleyn #westminster #coronations #royalty #henryviii #crownedfalconpress

#otd in 1533 Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England. Henry VIII began his infatuation with Anne 7 years prior. At the time Henry was still married to Catherine of Aragon and wanted Anne as his mistress; Anne famously declined this offer stating she will only be with him as his wife. Henry then spent the next 7 years figuring out ways to end his marriage the Catherine, before splitting from Rome and granting himself a divorce as head of the Church of England. Henry and Anne married in a secret ceremony on 14 November 1532, and Anne quickly became pregnant. 3 months after the birth of her daughter Elizabeth (the future Elizabeth I), the coronation took place and the country longed for a male heir. As we know, Anne was unsuccessful in her mission to have a son. She was subject to allegations and accusations of incest, adultery and witchcraft all in Henry's pursuit of another annulment. Anne was executed just 3 years after her coronation. #onthisday #anneboleyn #boleyn #tudors #monarchy #britishhistory #queen #king #coronation #crown #six #henryvlll #thetudors #history #womeninhistory

OTD: On this day in history Queen Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England. Anne was dressed in robes of purple velvet and ermine fur. She had her hair flowing down back, she wore a circlet of gold atop her head. Anne was heavily pregnant at the time of her coronation with the future Queen Elizabeth I, yet she carried herself with the dignity required of a Queen. She was crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, but what was more significant is that she was crowned with St. Edward the confessors crown. This was a joyous day for Anne, she had waited seven years for this day, all that was left now was to have a prince.. If I could go back in time, it would be to witness Anne being crowned👸🏻 #anneboleyn #westminsterabbey #westminsterhall #tudorhistory #coronation #anneboleynsociety #history #tudorhistory #otd #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory

On the 1st June 1533, Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England. It had been a seven year long battle to get her to this place, but finally, the day her come. The coronation began with Anne alighting from her royal barge at Westminster Hall. She was dressed in a purple velvet gown furred with ermine, the fur of royalty, set against a kirtle of white expertly woven with cloth of gold. She literally would have sparkled, and despite being six months pregnant with the future Queen Elizabeth I, Anne played her part to perfection. A great procession featuring the entire nobility of England, with Anne at it’s centre travelled along a blue carpet from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey itself. Upon arriving at the Abbey, a great fanfare announced the queen as she processed through the nave. Anne was given the singular honour of being crowned with the Crown of St Edward, a highly unusual and unique part of Anne’s coronation. No royal consort before or since has been crowned with the crown of the actual monarch. Exactly why was crowned in this way is not definitively known, but, it seems probable that Henry VIII chose to give Anne this honour, something he had not extended to Katherine of Aragon, as both a way of solidifying her position as his one and true uncontested queen, but also because she carried which everyone hoped was a future King of England in her tummy. By crowning Anne in this way, it could be argued that her baby was also being recognised as the future uncontested ruler. Infuriatingly, the original crown of St Edward no longer exists. It was destroyed on the orders of that no good bastard, Oliver Cromwell following overthrow of the monarchy at the end of the civil war. When King Charles II returned to England in 1660, a new crown was made, which is the one still used today. #onthisday #anneboleyn #thetudors #tudorqueens #queenanneboleyn #henryviii

Tudor carving, Henry Hatch's panel now in Faversham's Guildhall. I've been thinking about this (with the help of historic woodwork guru @yannickchastang). Featuring Catherine of Aragon's pomegranate, Tudor emblems and a cast of unfaithful lovers, it's an allegory worth unpicking. I wrote a little piece about it for @favershamlife but I'm sure there's much more to learn about it - all you Tudor iconography experts. We hear lots about Henry VIII and his six wives, but I want to know what contemporary people thought about them and this seems a good place to start - it was made in the early 1530s for a local merchant here in Faversham. Anne Boleyn is crowned Queen 👑 491 years ago today, the 1st of June 1533, Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen in Westminster Abbey. She was 6 months pregnant with the King’s child, whom Henry was convinced would be born a boy. Anne’s grand coronation ceremony utilized the St. Edward Crown, which had previously been reserved for reigning monarchs. By crowning the visibly pregnant Anne with this specific crown, he was also symbolically crowning her unborn child, his heir to the throne. The very same wooden throne (St. Edward’s Chair) that the current King of England, Charles III, was recently crowned on, is the exact same throne on which Anne Boleyn sat for her coronation. The chair is incredibly over 700 years old. After sitting on the coronation chair, Anne arose and stood before the throne while a mass was performed by the bishop of Westminster. Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, a close companion and supporter of Anne, prayed over the Queen as she lay before the altar. She was anointed in oils before walking back to St Edward’s Chair, where the archbishop crowned her. He then handed her the royal sceptre as well as the rod of ivory, other symbols of monarchy. Anne had reached the pinnacle of her achievements. She was now the Queen of England, crowned and legitimized. She was pregnant with the King’s heir. Anne had defeated all those who had tried to bring her down, and was now on top of the world. What could possibly go wrong… #anneboleyn #henryviii #history #otd #historynerd #16thcentury #queen #coronation #royal

Happy Coronation Day Queen👑❤️ Today in 1533, Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England dressed in white and gold in Westminster Abbey. This was a big victory against all those who had doubted her and stood in the way of her union with King Henry VIII. The Golden Age she wanted to bring in for England could hopefully commence…She aspired to further the Reformation, improve the education of her people, help the poor and give birth to an heir to the throne. One of the pageants featured the Virgin Mary Herself offering a crown. In my opinion, this is not because of Henry VIII but because of how deeply spiritual she was and devoted to Mother Mary (as can be seen by her Book of Hours) and Mother Mary also symbolises motherhood and fertility in spirituality. So, no doubt Anne felt aligned with the Divine, her mission and wished to reform her country’s spirituality but independent from the hold in Rome… Of course this event wasn’t appreciated by those who saw her as a spiritual and political threat but she shad supporters too and people who looked up to this new age with her as Queen with hope…Unlike many accounts wish to credit her for, she was to become a Queen of the people. This song is one of my favourites from Anne Boleyn’s Songbook🕊️💛 Follow @initials_tw_ for daily content and check out the website at the link in bio for articles, reviews and guided spiritual practices✨ #anneboleyn #queensofengland #queenofengland #tudors #tudorstyle #royalty #history #historylovers #reformation #reformists #spirituality #politics #likeforlikes #followforfollowback #followme

👑ANNA REGINA👑 On this day in history 1st June 1533; Anne Boleyn crowned Queen of England .She was led forth from the Palace of Westminster to Westminster Abbey to be crowned and anointed as Queen of England, wife of King Henry VIII and, she assumed, mother of his heir. She, a private gentlewoman from a middle-ranking family, had supplanted a daughter of Spain, and overturned a thousand years of English obedience to the Church of Rome. It was her moment of glory, and the culmination of more than seven years of ambition, frustration, and legal wrangling. Henry VIII had brought about a political, legal and religious transformation of England on a scale not seen since the Norman Conquest, to make Anne queen. He was determined that not just his subjects, but also his European rivals and allies, who had been watching events in England in horrified disbelief, must accept that Anne was to be honoured as his wife and Queen. Her crowning must therefore incorporate every traditional element of medieval coronations. #anneboleyn #annaregina #queen #england #henryviii #thetudors #tudordynasty #history #historicallove #nataliedormer #jonathanrhysmeyers #starz #netflix #showtime #tvseries #elizabethtudor #westminster #london #uktattooartist

#onthisday 1 June 1533 Anne Boleyn's coronation. ◼ Anne was crowned queen in a magnificent ceremony at Westminster Abbey with a banquet afterwards. ◼ She was the last queen consort of England to be crowned separately from her husband. Unlike any other queen consort, Anne was crowned with St Edward's Crown, which had previously been used to crown only a monarch. ◼ On the previous day, Anne had taken part in an elaborate procession through the streets of London seated in a litter of "white cloth of gold" that rested on two palfreys clothed to the ground in white damask, while the barons of the Cinque Ports held a canopy of cloth of gold over her head. ▪ In accordance with tradition she wore white, and on her head a gold coronet beneath which her long dark hair hung down freely. ◼ Afterwards, the usual banquet in Westminster Hall took place. Henry stood apart & watched his new queen from a distance, allowing her to be the sole focus of attention. __________ #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #d1jun #AnneBoleyn #QueenofEngland #QueenConsort #HouseofTudor #Tudor #Monarchy #England #WestminsterAbbey #Coronation #EnglishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #portraitpainting #Otd #BritishMonarchy #Royalfamily #Royalhistory #Historyfacts #Queen #Thequeen #Tudors #Tudorhistory #Westminster #HenryVIII #kinghenryviii #England #London

June 1st - On this day in the year 1533 AD, the coronation of Anne Boleyn took place in London’s Westminster Abbey. Anne’s coronation celebrations had started on May 29th, and had consisted of a procession through the city, pageants and feasting. She also spent two nights in the royal apartments at the Tower of London. However, the night before her coronation was spent in rooms at the new Whitehall Palace. She had an early start the following morning, Whitsunday, as the Mayor of London and aldermen, all dressed in crimson velvet, arrived at Westminster Hall before 8am in order to receive her. Anne herself emerged just before 9am. She was dressed in robes of purple velvet, with her hair free-flowing, and a circlet of gold and gems upon her head. Anne then stood under a Cloth of State as she waited for the cloth that was traditionally laid between Westminster Hall and the High Altar of Westminster Abbey to be unfurled. Once this was done, the procession to Westminster Abbey began. Anne walked barefoot, with her canopy being carried by four of the Lords of the Cinque Ports. Her robe was held up by the Bishops of London and Winchester, whilst her train was carried by the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. After arriving at the Abbey, Anne, who was six months pregnant with the future Elizabeth I, rested for a short while on a chair. The ceremony was then carried out by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. After the conclusion of the ceremony, the procession returned to Westminster Palace for Anne’s coronation feast. The lavish feast, which consisted of several courses, each made up of a generous variety of dishes, was presided over by various members of the nobility. Meanwhile, King Henry VIII, alongside numerous ambassadors, observed proceedings from a side room. Anne was the second, and last, of Henry VIII’s six wives to receive a coronation. Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Katherine Parr were never crowned, possibly due to a lack of funds. #onthisdayinhistory #tudors #anneboleyn

Today in History (1 June 1553), Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England. Pictured here is her portrait at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The museum label reads: "Anne Boleyn, about 1500-36 By an unknown artist Anne Boleyn was courted by Henry VIlI for years but refused to become his mistress. The king showered her with gifts and did not conceal his desire for her, wearing the motto Declare i dare not at a joust. She finally martied Henry in secret in 1533, before his first marriage had been officially annulled, giving birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, later that year. Anne was committed to the cause of religious reform but clashed with Thomas Cromwell. Without a son, her status in the king's eyes diminished and Cromwell moved against her, raising suspicions that she had committed adultery. Anne was found guilty of treason and executed." #OTD in 1533 Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England at Westminster Abbey as the second wife of Henry VIII. She would reign until her execution in 1536 following accusations of adultery, incest & treason which were more than likely fabricated as a way to remove her as an obstacle to Henry's want of a new wife, a wife he hoped would give him his longed for prince. She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth I, perhaps the finest monarch of the Tudor period. #history #anneboleyn #thetudors #historylovers #historyfacts #historynerd #henryviii #henryviiiwives

𖥸· — On this day, 1st June 1533, Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen of England, and it was truly her crowning moment. The coronation marked a new era for England and its people, and was a poignant personal triumph for both Anne and Henry who could finally reap the rewards of their almost decade long struggle to put Anne on the throne beside him. Celebrations in the streets and waters of London carried on from the 29th May, but the main event took place on Whitsunday, 1st June at Westminster Abbey. It was truly a magnificent display of pomp and pageantry, opulence and splendour that celebrated the ascension of Henry’s new Queen. To mark this day, our writer Ashlie will take us back to those days of celebratory, royal brilliance, and show us how Anne Boleyn was finally sitting comfortably on her throne. #OTD 1st June 1533 This was the fourth and final day of Anne Boleyn’s coronation events and the coronation ceremony itself was held at Westminster Abbey. The Mayor of London, aldermen, sheriffs and Council of the City of London took a barge to Westminster at 7am and there waited for the Queen to be. Anne arrived somewhere between 8 and 9am and stood under the cloth of state as the royal court and peers gathered. Once everybody was ready, the officers of arms organised everyone into a procession to make their way on a railed blue “ray cloth” which had been laid from the high dais of the King’s bench in the hall all the way to the high altar of the abbey.

Anne Boleyn's ascent to the throne as Queen of England was marked by controversy and a pivotal reconfiguration of religious and political alignments in England. After King Henry VIII became enamored with Anne, he sought to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, which the Roman Catholic Church refused to grant. This denial led Henry to establish the Church of England, a move that allowed him to marry Anne in 1533. Anne's influence was significant during her short tenure as queen, particularly in fostering the Protestant Reformation within England. However, her failure to produce a male heir weakened her position dramatically. Tragically, Anne Boleyn's downfall was swift. By 1536, amidst accusations of infidelity, incest, and conspiracy against the king, she was arrested and subsequently executed. Her execution marked a grim chapter in English history and highlighted the volatile nature of Tudor court politics. Her daughter, Elizabeth I, would later ascend to the throne and reign for 45 years, overseeing a period known as the Elizabethan Age, renowned for its cultural renaissance and maritime success. Anne’s legacy, though marred by her tragic end, remains significant for her role in the religious transformation of England and as the mother of one of its greatest monarchs. #AnneBoleyn #DidYouKnow

On this day, 31st May 1533, day three of the mega celebrations of Anne Boleyn’s coronation, the woman herself processed through London, from the Tower of London to Westminster Hall. Anne and the citizens of London witnessed pageants, music, dancing and much revelry! Anne was carried under a canopy of cloth of gold. Her hair loose and flowing, the queen wore white cloth of gold, an ermine-trimmed mantle of matching cloth of gold, and a coif with a circlet of “rich stones”. Going ahead of Anne was a colossal procession of many of the most prominent figures of the royal court, organised by rank, the lowest at the start and the closer to the queen you got, the higher in rank those preceding her. All of the recently created Knights of the Bath were there, as were all barons, earls, marquesses, the Lord Chancellor, the Archbishop of York, the Venetian ambassador, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the French ambassador, the Mayor of London and finally Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, acting as Constable of England. The procession passed through many of the most prominent parts of London, and at each stop there were shows, tableau’s, dancing etc. Although London looks completely different now, many of the spaces they passed are still big parts of the city, notably St Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Hall and of course, the Tower of London. After the pageant came to an end, Anne arrived at Westminster Hall, where she and her ladies enjoyed refreshments, notably hippocras which the queen was said to greatly favour. Anne, now six months pregnant, then retired, no doubt exhausted, and conscious of the colossal day she had ahead of her, for the day after, the moment would finally come - her coronation! #anneboleyn #thetudors #tudorhistory #onthisday #henryviii #queenanneboleyn

What a man-sandwich to be stuck between …. King Henry VIII; with his illnesses, tyrannical nature & past marital endeavours….or Thomas Seymour, Baron Sudeley; notorious rogue & power seeker. I don’t think either of them would be for me if I’m honest !! It’s a shame that such a learned woman as Queen Katherine Parr is forever linked to these two deeply disappointing husbands. The stained glass window is from Sudeley Castle chapel, where she was buried. #henryviii #anneboleyn #six #katherineparr #queen #king #tudors #thetudors #sudeleycastle #chapel #stainedglass #beautiful #history #learning #fyp #foryou

📖 book review 📖 The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’m a huge historical fiction fan, but for some reason this is my first Philippa Gregory read. I’ve tended to stay away from historical fiction set in Tudor England because I was taught it so much in school, and tend to prefer more modern history anyway, that it just never seemed like something I’d find that interesting. But I found The Other Boleyn Girl in a free library and decided to give it a go and am so glad I did. This book follows the Boleyn family, as they do anything in their power to gain status in Tudor England, namely by offering up Mary and Anne Boleyn as mistresses to King Henry. Gregory has a really brilliant way of writing historical fiction, where it’s really dense in details, and I felt like I learnt so much, but at the same time it was compulsive reading, and didn’t feel too heavy or boring to get through. I think because this was based on a real family it added so much to the book, because some moments are so outlandish you can’t believe they actually happened. I really loved the central character of Mary, so often Anne is the favoured of Henry’s wives and the one that most people talk about, so I enjoyed learning more about Mary and how her life was forever changed by her family’s unrelenting need for power. If you’re a fan of historical fiction, and for some reason like me haven’t gotten around to reading Philippa Gregory yet, I can’t recommend this book enough. It definitely won’t be my last Philippa Gregory! If you’ve read any of her other books, let me know which ones you’ve enjoyed because I want to read her whole back catalogue now!
