Whilst working on some new pieces in my studio, I'm going to showcase some older work and explore the themes a little more on here. • Ashton Court (2019) was taken from many many trips up to a brilliant and popular public park in Bristol. At the heart of it lies a gothic mansion built in yellow stone, but on the entrance to the park is the arts faculty of the University of the West of England. This particular architectural add on there caught my eye, with it's colour pops and memories of schooling days. Something about it seems way more appealing than the mansion itself for me, the graphic shape and line set amongst the softness of the park (which I purposefully chose to leave from this composition). It's a place I often cycle to now with my children and I love spotting this place which itself has been added to and edited since 2019. That's what I notice about living in the city, how quickly things change and develop. Super excited to have got these paintings into the first @eastquaywatchet open call exhibition. The show runs from 25th May until September 2nd and will show artist's work from Somerset and beyond. Watchet sits on the Somerset coast looking out to the Bristol Channel and South Wales. It's a beautiful spot and well worth a day trip. This #wip painting is part of an ongoing project I've been exploring since becoming a mother. It's part of a decommissioned prison that i visited a few years back. The first time i went i found out that morning I was pregnant with my daughter Ada and the whole experience that day was totally surreal, walking around an empty prison knowing there was new life growing inside me. It's taken me years to realise there's a project in my experience of #matrescence and motherhood, and I'll continue to share work that's inspired by it. Last night I took part in an 'In Conversation' event @rwabristol as part of the Bristol billboard commission that three women artists had the joy of making. Shout out to @lucyjturner @liz.naden • It was a rare treat to be able to talk about the idea's that went into our applications, work and final pieces all together chaired brilliantly by @cleolakecreativity 🧡 • As I went to see each of our billboards yesterday, i realised the underlying theme linking all was Unity. Idea's that celebrated and highlighted our varied and shared experiences within Bristol as women today. • My piece 'The parish of Temple' was a collaboration with my 3.5 year old daughter Ada. Without her I wouldn't have had the idea. We collected lots of 'treasures' together from playparks, beaches, sandpits and carefully collaged them onto the painting. I wanted it to convey what comes before us and what we choose to leave behind for the next generation. • I'm so interested in combining motherhood with my creative work, and this subject matter will continue to be my passion. This piece is a tribute to my daughter Ada and son Evan. Thanks kids, you'll always be my inspiration. I'm over the moon to announce that my commission application was recently selected to create work that would go up on two billboards in Bristol this Summer. It's in response to the current @rwabristol exhibition 'Found Cities; Lost Objects: Women in the City' curated by Turner prize winning artist Lubaina Himid CBE. 'The parish of Temple' is an exploration of the changing landscape of Bristol city as a mother, seen through the eyes of my children. Pieces of 'treasure' as my daughter calls them were collected from the building site and beyond to embellish the painting. The piece explores our relationship with where we live, masculinity & femininity and the legacy we choose to leave for the next generation. The original artworks are currently being exhibited at the RWA, and the billboards are up until 13th August. I am incredibly honoured to have been one of three women artist's to be selected. I felt my idea's were heard and my work seen which means everything!
