On May 18, 2003, I experienced profound grief following the loss of my daughter, Catherine Rose. Despite my flawless pregnancy, fate had other plans for me. Holding Catherine after her passing was a bittersweet moment, made more poignant by the presence of my mother, who had also endured the loss of a child at birth. In that shared sorrow, I realized my mother had never held her own daughter. In a gesture of solidarity, I passed my baby to her, saying, "Let's grieve together." This year, Catherine Rose would have turned 21, prompting reflections on the significance of community and mental health support in times of loss and hardship. This month marks Mental Health Awareness Month, and recently, I was in Colorado attending Robbieโ€™s Hope annual gala. Robbieโ€™s Hope is a foundation dedicated to eradicating the stigma surrounding teen depression and suicide. It's a cause close to my heart, given that suicide ranks as the second-leading cause of death among teens in the U.S. and the primary cause in Colorado, where Robbieโ€™s Hope originated. As we near the end of month #5 in 2024 ... it's a great time to revisit our intentions and goals we had set in January! AND aligns with our topic this week - REcommit - don't QUIT! In January I had sent an intention to "find ME again" in 2024. The end of 2023 was rough for me as a caregiver - I found myself in a familiar place - fatigued, exhausted, and depleted. I longed for a version of myself that felt better - more like my "old" self. As I forge ahead throughout 2024, continually learning and growing as I go - it has occurred to me that this intention was perhaps not very realistic. After all, hasn't my caregiving changed me - in all the ways (for better/worse)? I continually find myself growing in patience, boundaries, active listening and hard conversations. (OR should I say I am continually tested in these by my care-recipients, offering opportunities for growth?) Proper breathing is often overlooked but may hold the key to breaking through your current health, fitness and performance challenges. I'll use Strength Training as an example. Picture thisโ€ฆ you're due for a heavy set of Barbell Squats, 8 reps, midway through you're struggling to hold form, technique is breaking down AND you're unable to catch your breath. Sound familiar? If so, you might be missing out on the benefits of intentional breathing skills specific to Strength Training and even more specifically for Barbell Squats. Here's the lowdown, When exerting force, balance is key. You need balance between 'flexibility and stability' and you need balance between 'breathing and breath holds'. When under load, such as pushing or pulling external weight, this balance creates optimum stability. When you're pumping out body weight reps like pushups, pull ups, or performing cardio like sprints or boxing, how you sync your breath (either in-sync or out-of-sync with your movements) changes the intensity of your movements. When it comes to stretching, mastering your breath can take you deeper into poses, calm your mind, and ease muscle tension. Guilt is a feeling often experienced when we act against our values. Shame is a deeply held belief about our unworthiness as a person. @BreneBrown, shame and vulnerability researcher says it best when she says: โ€œI believe that there is a profound difference between shame and guilt. I believe that guilt is adaptive and helpful โ€“ itโ€™s holding something weโ€™ve done or failed to do up against our values and feeling psychological discomfort. I define shame as the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging โ€“ something weโ€™ve experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection. I donโ€™t believe shame is helpful or productive. Do you ever have those days or moments when you realize you have been holding your breath? We will often hold our breath without realizing it when we are feeling stressed, anxious, excited, or frustrated. Breathing meditations can provide immediate stress relief helping us feel more centered, peaceful, and in control. I've included a couple of my favs below. Try one and take it slow. Box Breathing - In addition to a stress reliever, box breathing can improve concentration and performance. 1. Breathe in, counting to 4 slowly. Feel the air enter your lungs. 2. Hold your breath for 4 seconds. 3. Slowly exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds. 4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 a few times, or until you feel better. Belly breathing - Can reduce tension in the neck and shoulders, massage the heart, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for rest and digest). 1. Place your hands on your belly, thumbs at the navel and fingertips below. And breathe. 2. On the inhale, allow the belly to expand under your fingertips. 3. On the exhale, contract your navel, emptying your belly. โ€ข Sometimes it is helpful to envision an ocean wave. Inhale belly out, exhale belly in. โ€ข As the expansion and contraction become more natural, focus on keeping a rhythmic breathing pattern, where the inhale and exhale are equal. How CAN two truths both be TRUE? Think about how you can meet your thoughts, emotions, and experiences in the MIDDLE. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) the TOM skill can be used. TOM stands for THOUGHT - OPPOSITE - MIDDLE. T - THOUGHT: Notice your thought. "I'm a completely burned out caregiver." O - OPPOSITE: Next, what is the complete opposite of that thought? "I'm a caregiver who is healthy and flourishing." M - MIDDLE: Now, move to the middle. "I'm a caregiver, and I'm not taking care of myself." Sometimes we need to act our way into our beliefs, literally. To change our underlying assumptions, we need to start behaving in ways that reflect what we want to believe. โ€œYes, andโ€ reminds us that there are multiple truths and that we, therefore, do not have to simply reject someone when they challenge our assumptions. Importantly, honoring someone elseโ€™s reality does not mean that we have to agree with it. It means that we recognize and respect their reality. We can then learn from and expand on this reality. The next time you are in a conversation. See what happens when someone says something that might challenge your ideas. In that moment, pause and check in with what you are thinking and feeling. You might be feeling a bit threatened, even angry. You might be thinking of the defensive arguments that you would make to challenge their perspective. Instead, try responding with โ€œYes, and.โ€ What if you started by truly honoring their position? Then, rather than reject it, see how you could build on it in light of your own insights. You know we're huge fans of DBT - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Thinking in extremes, also called polarized thinking or black-and-white thinking, is a way of looking at the world from an all-or-nothing mindset. It doesn't allow us to see the DIALECTIC in a given situation - "the existence of opposites." Dialectical thinking allows us to see BOTH - two perspectives - two truths in EVERY situation. This is REALLY hard for SO many people - most people. With training, for me it was DBT, I was able to SEE both truths. I can listen, seek to understand, and acknowledge/validate your truth for you. I don't have to LIKE it, or adhere to it, I need to see and understand and validate. You control your thoughts; they donโ€™t control you. Stop, take a breath, think about the gray area in between the black and white extremes. Weak boundaries cause emotional pain.. Growing up being conditioned to think, act and fear like your caregivers and peers is not the best when the world is continually changing. I was so naive when I was growing up, I was sheltered because my parents couldnโ€™t afford to socialise. I was taken care of by my older brothers who were physically and emotionally abused. I was actually (and very luckily), the only person in the household that wasnโ€™t physically abused, to a greater extent, but my mistakes and accidents still came at a huge price for a little girl who didnโ€™t understand the world. This creates conditions in your mind that you have to please, be perfect, stay quiet, walk on eggshells and never ever rock the boat. You end up with such weak boundaries that you stop valuing yourself. At 42 years old, I have only just began to say how I feel in most situations. I have only just found my voice enough to not be absolutely petrified someone is going to shout and scream if I say something they donโ€™t like or makes them feel bad. I have only just regained the control of my nervous system enough to speak proudly, openly and honestly about my thoughts and feelings without feeling like Iโ€™m in imminent danger. And that inner peace is the most beautiful thing you can experience when your world has always been filled with extreme chaos. And this is why I have found deep love for myself, and my life, and have surrounded myself with the most beautiful, powerful situations and relationships.
