The parasympathetic nervous system and breathing are connected through the body’s vagus nerve and fight-or-flight response. When someone is under stress, their autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system activates itself to help them escape danger. This causes functions like shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat, and anxiety. Practicing slow, deep breathing informs the body that it’s safe now. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system and returns the body to a relaxed state of functioning. by learning how to breath low, slow and less you are able to determine the outcome of your day. if your breathing is fast and erratic, your day will be too, whilst if your breathing is slow and controlled, everything else will follow. low: into the belly, filling it up like a balloon, expanding the lower ribs and chest slow: in through the nose for a count of 5, out of the nose for a count of 5 less: 6 breaths per minute

I didn’t have a great day, and it has been quite stressful because I had to deal with bureaucracy. I felt some pressure rising due to the current processes I’m involved in. Life can get stressful at times; it’s a fact. How do I usually deal with life’s challenges? I try to step out of it by stopping the mental chatter through exercise (any type of exercise that you truly enjoy can work) and breathing exercises. I also practice self-hypnosis regularly before going to sleep. The key is not to eliminate stress entirely, as we cannot control external circumstances, and stuff happens to everyone. The key is self-regulation in challenging situations. When you feel rattled, your breathing pattern becomes shallow and rapid, which can exacerbate the feeling of tension. Regulate your body’s fight-or-flight response with the physiological sigh technique. 🌬️ Inhale through your nose, take a quick pause and then take another shorter, sharp inhale followed by an extended exhale through your mouth. 🧡 My 3 go to techniques when I or my clients have been triggered or experience feelings of anxiety. 🧡 1. Triangular breathing. Breathe in for one side of a triangle and out for the other 2. Do that 2 or 3 times. For kids, I like to get them to draw the triangle on paper. Colour it in. Decorate it. Pop it on their wall at home and trace their eye around their triangle as they breathe. I always ask my clients to schedule time to practise this, so when the time comes that they could use it, they remember they have it. No point in having lovely calming techniques if you forget you have them. 🧡 2. Butterfly tapping. Create a butterfly with interlinked hands and tap gently on the chest … and breathe. Wonderfully calming and kids love this too. 🧡 3. Get mindful with a warm drink. Feel the warmth of the mug under your fingertips. Notice the steam. Take a sip and really taste it. Notice everything you can see, hear, feel, taste and smell in that moment. Let me know which of these is your favourite.
