UNDERSTANDING CHILD LABOUR? Roughly over 160 million children globally were subjected to child labour at the beginning of 2020, with 9 million additional children at risk due to the impact of COVID-19. This accounts for nearly 1 in 10 children worldwide. Almost half of them are in hazardous work that directly endangers their health and development (UNICEF). As stated in the 2016 Global Estimates of Child Labour, one-fifth of all African children are involved in child labour, this is twice as high as what is obtainable in any region of the world. Estimated 9% of African children are in hazardous work, this is again about the world's highest. The number of children in child labour in Africa is 72.1 million and 31.5 million of this number are in hazardous work. What exactly is child labour? It is "supplementing the present with the future" (Iden 2024). The Minimum Age Convention, 1973 (No.138) set the minimum age for admission into employment or work at 15 years (13 for light work) and the minimum age for hazardous work at 18 (16 under certain strict conditions). The Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182) defines as a "Child" a person under 18 years of ago. These two conventions are to be ratified by countries, you need to confirm if you country has ratified them. Children are fast becoming primary wage earners across countries for a number of reasons and this results in extreme bodily and mental harm & even death. Early admission into work robs children of their fundamental human rights as right to healthcare services, right to education and more with a high cumulative impact whose estimates are unquantifiable. Agriculture sector accounts for the largest share of child labour globally, in Africa, it accounts for 85% and these are mostly subsistence & commercial farming. Most of these children are unpaid and never in an employment relationship contract with a third-party employer, rather they work on family farms and enterprises. For any food you eat, please remember, the labour of an unpaid child somewhere in the world must have gone into it. Happy International Day of Families. We've truly been blessed to have the family we have. Since long before we started Cacao, we have been the pillars of each others' lives, sharing our love and helping each other through the hard times. However, one of the reasons we started Cacao was to draw awareness to those who don't have such family support, namely the children of Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana who work as slaves on cocoa plantations. These children come from desperately poor families who they need to work to support, which makes it easy for human traffickers to lure them away with false promises of pay on cocoa farms. Once they get there however, they work long hours doing backbreaking work for no money and are beaten if they try to escape. All without seeing their parents, brothers or sisters for years, if not longer. Such separation of families is sadly not uncommon, with forced child labour being present in many industries besides chocolate. To make sure you are not unwittingly contributing to this, we recommend downloading the Sweat and Toil app developed by the US Labour Department, which will tell you exactly what common products (including chocolate) are produced using slavery. That way, you can be sure the products you share with your family aren't contributing to the destruction of another.
