Preparing for a car ride and play happened before we left, too. I taped mostly large magnets to the laminated playmat to add the forest animals magnets. They were easily removed to have a clear playmat, as well. Woodland Sounds is part of the great Sound Book series. It was a very rainy day today. We played several games. One of which was Treasure Hunt. It's a counting and coin collecting game. We didn't follow the rules completely, as he set it up. But we still had fun! Then, we moved onto building with additional magnetic tiles. He wanted the people from Treasure Hunt as well as his wooden bees. He first built a house, then a hive, and finally, a tower. Our play today was contained in the portable sand tray. We were in the car part of the time, so the sand tray is a good way to enjoy some play on the go. It is a fun alternative to electronics in the car. We paired the Little Helpers Picnic Sort & Play. The Sort & Play series has felt pieces that go on black feltboard areas. It's Cinco De Mayo and National Lemonade Day today. So we combined them in our play today. We used yellow pompom for a less mess lemonade. We used the different ingredients from the taco food cart to make some meals. There were a few everything burritos served and tacos with only lettuce and cheese. May Day Baskets Have you ever been the recipient of a May Day Basket or given them? Growing up in Iowa, we would make them and receive them from neighbors. The baskets looked different from year to year. It could be a plastic cup, rolled up construction paper, or a more traditional basket. The contents also varied from popcorn, candy, flowers, toys, and other items. But the fun part was delivering them on May 1 without the recipient knowing who it came from. It's a tradition that continues with my boys. It's fun to surprise others or to get them. It's easy to forget or skip doing them. But this is a reminder that if you want to do one, you only have a couple of days to do so. How is it almost May?! @thepurpleelephantbookshop A dragon house with volcanoes was requested today for the play. So we used our dinosaur doll house printable from @practicallyplaying. We used it to match different items found in the Big Book of ABC, stacked rocks, put together tree puzzles, and played tic tac toe. He found fish to be the opponent in tic tac toe. We had dragon play earlier this year from the @tbr.challenge. He has wanted them quite regularly since then. And before that we really had done much with them. It’s a great way to introduce new topics or reinforce part themes. What’s a topic you want to introduce your kids too? We had fun with our fizzy chia seed swamp dinosaur tray. The chia seed goo was a reuse from the pond tray (see yesterday's post). We drained off some extra water. Then, we added baking soda to the chia seed goo to get the fizzy reaction when it was squrited with vinegar. Then we added baking soda and red food coloring to the volcano to get the reaction there. The geode worked as a great scoop. We cleaned up my added all the tray materials into soapy water and clear water a few times. Is anyone else still finishing up taxes? A super easy setup was needed for today. Color changing Cars, water, and the Cars rug were what worked. He loves water and his Cars. So it's often requested! Putting a shower curtain on the rug with ice water and warm helped save the floor from messes. This could be done on the table, too. But since I wanted to use the rug, we did the floor instead. We did a space tray focusing on the solar eclipse. The boys enjoy all things space! So they are happy to have a space inspired tray! I often think of baby animals and new life when it's spring. We had some baby animal themed fun. The Mirror Mirror series is so sweet for babies but also not lost on toddlers and preschoolers. My son had fun looking through pages at the mirrors, making faces, and acting like the animals. Then, also use the figures in the mirror. It's Holy Week. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. We used The Easter Story in the Usborne Book of Bible Stories. It has simplified biblical stories. We talked about Palm Sunday and Jesus riding on a donkey through the resurrection and the reason for Easter. The 3 part Easter set, finger puppets, and wooden set helped with it. It's Women's History Month, so today we did a tray with Famous Women. It also works for @tbr.challenge this week. It can be a great introduction to many famous women. It has too much information for a toddler/ preschooler. But we just summarized the selected ones and talked about the pictures. And it will be a great book for them to explore, as they get older! Yesterday was Mar10 Day. So we had to have some Mario fun in our play today! My three boys are huge fans! They've even drawn me in. We used a variety of Mario materials that we gathered up to make the play. The boys helped gather the materials and have input on what needed to be there and what could go. We needed to add a small race track for our version this time of Mario Kart. It's a mix of Lego and figures that have been part of various gifts.
