Die Gila Cliff Dwellings liegen nicht direkt am Continental Divide Trail. Es ist aber nur ein kurzer Umweg von etwa einer Meile von der Gila River Alternativroute, auf der wir unterwegs sind. Für uns ist klar, dass der Besuch dieser historischen Höhlenbauten einfach dazugehört. Schliesslich wollen wir auch mehr über Land und Leute lernen während der Wanderung auf dem CDT. Von Doc Campbell's Post aus wandern wir zuerst 4.5 Meilen entlang der Strasse bis wir die Gila Cliff Dwellings erreichen. Wir sind extra nicht zu früh losgelaufen und trotzdem ist noch alles geschlossen. Die Ranger nehmen es sehr genau hier und ein Besuch der Cliff Dwellings ist wirklich erst ab 9 Uhr möglich. Es ist noch kalt und so vergeht die Dreiviertelstunde bis 9 Uhr sehr schleppend. Dann ist es soweit. Genau um 9 Uhr bekommen wir vom Ranger ein kurzes Briefing für den Besuch der Gila Cliff Dwellings. Das Zugangstor wird geöffnet und wir dürfen auf den Pfad zu den Höhlen. Unsere schweren Rucksäcke dürfen wir bei der Ranger Station deponieren und so sind wir leichtfüssig unterwegs. Nach einem kurzen Aufstieg durch eine kleine Schlucht erreichen wir auch schon die Höhlenbauten. Zusammen mit zwei anderen Hikern, Silver und Timo, hören wir gespannt den Erklärungen des Rangers zu und können auch Fragen stellen, welche sehr kompetent beantwortet werden. Bei unserer Rückkehr zur Ranger Station stehen über 10 Rucksäcke von anderen Hikern bei der Ranger Station. Wir kommen gerade noch rechtzeitig für den Ranger Talk zu den Gila Gliff Dwellings. Wir lauschen den Erzählungen und lernen noch mehr über die Höhlenbauten und deren Bewohner der Mogollon Kultur aus dem 13. Dec 2021: Mesa Verde, an archealogical and natural wonder filled with fabulous cliff dwellings, tree houses, and other housing and storage structures! The area was inhabited since c.7500 BC by the Lithic Peoples (the first peoples to have entered the Americas), the Archaic people, the Ancestral Puebloans, and finally by the Pueblo people until 1285 AD. During my road trip in Arizona I visited some ancient cliff dwellings built by the Sinagua indigenous people between 1100-1400 AD. 🏰 The Montezuma Castle is nestled some 90 feet up in a natural limestone rock alcove. 🏜️ It is not really a castle, but a prehistoric apartment complex consisting of 20 rooms. More from our trip to AZ/CA this past February. Spent a morning exploring Walnut Canyon National Monument, Flagstaff, AZ. The trail down into the canyon and along the canyon wall allows you to get up close to Sinagua cliff homes more than 800 years old. The name Sinagua is Spanish for "without water" due to their ability to turn a relatively dry region in a homeland. The Cliff Dwellings in Bandelier National Monument. Preserved homes of ancestral Puebloans. They built homes into the cliffside, using the rock to hold up their wooden roofs and extending it out using clay walls. The storage and communal spaces are built with an entrance only at the top, where they had to climb in. To get up to the high space in the cliff side we had to climb a series of wooden ladders.
