Progress!! Despite the corruption at the EPA, the agency is finally stepping up and doing its job to protect Americans from harmful levels of PFAS in drinking water. Enforceable standards have been announced, with the rule setting limits for five individual PFAS chemicals in the parts per trillion (ppt). Nearly $1 billion of new funding is available for PFAS testing and treatment at public water systems, and to help owners of private wells address PFAS contamination. Everyone should have access to clean water - it's a basic human right! Public water systems will have five years to address their PFAS problems – three years to sample their systems and establish the existing levels of PFAS, and an additional two years to install water treatment technologies if their levels are too high. This is a huge step in the right direction. PFAS contamination has been brewing for over 75 years and unfortunately, there is no quick fix for this massive problem. PFAS are a class of very toxic, man-made chemicals known as Forever Chemicals because they don't break down in our environment or our bodies. PFAS are carcinogens and endocrine disruptors that are linked to a myriad of health harms. Meanwhile, our most reliable filtration option for removing PFAS at home is reverse osmosis.
