If you say you care about children, then that means you need to care about their mothers, too. If you say you care about mothers, but do not support an end to all occupations and empires, then you do not care about mothers or children. If folks really care about what is best for children and their families, invest your time, money, and resources in supporting mutual aid and groups working to provide access to housing, nutrition, healthcare (this includes mental health support), income, childcare, and related needs. For instance, please for the love, don’t ask how you can adopt a Palestinian child. Instead, ask how you can support an unconditional ceasefire and an end to the gen-O-s1de. You can donate to the @thepcrf. You can educate others. You can also support the work of @stopcopcity and donate to the @atlsolfund. Because truly, it is all connected. There are so many actions you can take that help support and create communities that are empowered to take care of each other. Abolishing the adoption industry and ending family policing is about ending economic exploitation. It’s about ending the oppression that creates the circumstances that cause family separation. It’s about building support and community care for all families, not just the wealthy. Stop asking, “what about all the kids who need families?” and start asking, “what about all the families that need support?” #decolonize #adoption #abolition #adoptionsurvivor #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

A vital part of reclaiming autonomy as adoption survivors is finding the language that accurately communicates our lived experiences. You have every right to feel angry. Adoption isn’t a cute story. It’s violent and traumatic. When we give ourselves permission to speak honestly and truthfully, we free ourselves to be authentic and whole! #decolonize #adoption #abolition #adopteecoach #lifecoaches #holisticcoach #adoptionsurvivor #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

Can you see the different subjects mixed together? Watch the live on @stichtingaran regarding the three motions that have been submitted and accepted recently. During the live, they generously spent time explaining what's so problematic about the binary of the so-called happy and unhappy adoptee. Something the media is complicit in, they added. #adoptienederland #commissiejoustra #adoptie #whitesaviorcomplex #decolonizeyourmind #kinderhandel #decolonize #adoption #abolition #adoptionindustry #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #asianadoptee #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adopteestories #adopteesspeak #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adopteemovement #adultadoptees

Many people love to single out cases where the adoption seemingly turned out well. Please pay attention that you need to hear this straight from the mouth of an adult adoptee themselves. Most importantly, however, is that you know that adoption is an industry and not a tiny business in selling babies, while these of course also exist. The reality is that adoption is a 24 billion dollar industry (in the US). In today's post I want to highlight how people in power (goverment, adoption agencies, ngo's, adopters etc) get to decide what is good and bad: That there is something good about buying and uprooting babies. It's like some people in the West decide which foreigner is welcome and which isn't. And they decided that adoptees are wanted, welcome. That is until, if you're an adoptee, you have your first experience with discrimination or r4c1sm. Then you learn that you're a *insert slur / assumption*.  I think that many adopted people start to wonder at one point what being 'wanted' means. What 'love' means within the adoptive family. Is it good to be wanted? Who does it benefit to be wanted? Many reactions I get from people in the West is that adoptees benefit greatly from living in a wealthy, developed and morally high country. It's exactly this belief which reflects the c0l0nizers' mindset that people of colour are savages who should be tamed and shaped into what they deem right. Positive discrimination is still discrimination that stems from a (white) svprem4cist belief. The model minority myth doesn't benefit Asian people. And being exoticized or fetishized as an Asian woman is, in fact, a dangerous thing. At last, the text under translation, of course, refers to the Dutch treatment of refugees/ asylum seekers (of colour). And maybe some of you have picked up on this already, but Jason Bhugwandass did a research into the experiences of Dutch youth in the Zikos department of the child welfare institution iHUB. The white text is something that Franc Weerwind said. But, if a child is better off in the Netherlands due to available special health care for example, there's still no need for the adoption industry nor the practice of adoption to exist.

Adoption is always in the interest of anyone who makes money off of our bodies. For example, the people working at adoption agencies, mediators etc. But it's also important to let you look at adoption as a market or industry and that these exist within larger systems of oppression. Most evident is capitalism. Do you think it is only natural that people in the west can afford to buy a baby from the global South, and therefore is allowed - even stimulated - to do so? Do you believe it is fair to the parent(s) of the children in the global South? That it is right towards the child themselves? To make sense of this all, it is, therefore, really important to understand oppressive systems in general, and even the political and societal situation of the countries involved.  There are many ways to talk about the adoption industry. You will find many Instagram accounts that stress the inherent trauma of being separated from your family and the consecutive risks of trauma of being raised in a society that denies your lived experience. When I think of the adoption industry right now, I mainly see the hypocrisy of adopters who hide behind the white saviour narrative. Are they raising their voices, do they use their whiteness, to speak about the children in P4l3stine? Is their empathy and compassion (or even interest) towards children genuine?  Or maybe only when it comes to fulfilling their own wishes? I believe we live in a time when masks are falling off, and we finally see the true faces of people who call themselves civilised and think of themselves as righteous and superior.  The adoption industry is a disgusting existence that makes a lot of money with our bodies. If I remember correctly: adoption in the United States is a 14 billion dollar industry! Everyone involved is complicit and perpetuates trauma, which, mind you, can be prevented. The answer is abolition. I don't expect people to advocate for adoptees, but that's also not necessary. In my opinion, as long as society understands the oppressive systems we all live under, and tries to dismantle and decolonize from one of those, that would be a good start. Because it is all intertwined.

Language matters. Words matter. For too long the adoption narrative has been written and controlled by the buyers and sellers. A vital part of reclamation is asserting sovereignty of your story and your identity. Regaining autonomy and agency in how you choose to understand your experiences. I intentionally choose to call myself an adoption survivor, because adoption didn’t save me. Adoption sold me. And everyday I’m on this earth, I am surviving being a sold and bought person. We deserve to tell our own stories. You deserve to choose your own words and to define your own experience. #decolonize #adoption #abolition #adoptionsurvivor #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

This observation was shared by my 10-year old daughter last night during a car ride. It started with her asking me out of the blue, "Do we know anyone who has ever been in prison?" She knows I'm an abolitionist, and we have had plenty of conversations and participated in actions addressing the harm caused by policing and the prison industrial complex. But she had never asked me this specific question before. I answered her honestly that yes, we do know people who have been incarcerated, including her haraboji (Korean grandfather/my Appa). I explained the context of my adoption, and that his imprisonment was one of the reasons I was forcibly removed from my Omma and Appa, and then subsequently sold. And while I am using her observation to highlight the systemic injustices that adoption exploits, it's also just as important to remember that the work of liberation is rooted in the personal, in the desire to liberate us all from the suffering caused by systems of oppression, of which adoption is part. Yes, adoption is a tool of oppression. Adoption is also personal. The impact of adoption is daily and long-term, intimate and intergenerational. #decolonize #adoption #abolition #prevention #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

Let’s be honest. Adoption does not exist to support families and communities. It exists to separate and commodify families and communities. Child Protection Services is not here to protect families. Repost from @the_empress_han • To all the adopted kids out there who wish for a world where their eyes look like their mother’s, this is for us! There are no illustrations, because I am not an illustrator. Lol. But here at least is text that I created, if I were to imagine a children’s book that offered a narrative rooted in a decolonial understanding of adoption. I am limited to 10 pages here on IG. And I wrote this out in probably like an hour or two. But given more time and space to explore and imagine (and an awesome [adopted] illustrator), there would be so much I would include. In fact, maybe some day I’ll be able to have that time and space (and funding, lol). Let's keep adding our decolonial adoption narratives! If you have a story to tell, please share it with our community!! Your experiences are important! I’ve had so many conversations with so many adoption survivors over the past 2 decades about the connection between narcissism and adoption. Adoption is self-selecting for narcissistic adopters. I’m not saying this is happening on a conscious level. Those with clinical NPD are not self-aware. But the adoption industry benefits narcissistic adopters by providing access to vulnerable children. It took a dear friend gently supporting me for years to even recognize my own situation. Eventually learning how to set boundaries for myself also played a vital role in reclaiming my autonomy and authentic self. If you haven’t already, check out my new podcast @adoptionisalie for an in-depth exploration of the adoption myth. #decolonize #adoption #abolition #npdsurvivor #narcissistawareness #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

I am not here to be happy. There are so many f$cking gen-0-sides happening on this land and around the world. The obligatory utterance of “Happy New Year” is a reflection of Amerikkka’s dominant culture of denial, erasure, toxic positivity, and willful ignorance forced upon the populous by the demands of capitalism. I’m not saying we can’t experience joy and meaning. In fact, we must cultivate and imagine radical joy and lasting meaning as part of our journeys toward liberation. However, it’s vital to understand that the pursuit of happiness is the antithesis to finding joy, meaning, and most of all, Liberation. Happiness is fleeting and meaningless. Safety, connection, and love are true and everything that humanity needs. I’m not going to pretend that I even know what all of this looks like or that I have all the answers, because we know that no one does. But I do know we are all connected. And I know that I want to pursue Connection. I know that I want to pursue Liberation. I know I need to evolve and grow and stay open while remembering who and what matters to me. #decolonize #adoption #abolition #freepalestine #ceasefirenow #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

I’ve been quiet this month. Quiet so that my body can speak to me, and I can hear her. I wrote this poem as a way to process what my body is telling me. This time of year is when I was taken from my motherland. For the first time in my life, I am allowing my body to share her memories with me of what she experienced when she lost everything all at once. Her memories of loss, grief, terror, fear, loneliness. My body has been telling me that when I was sold and taken away from my motherland, she did not know if she was going to survive. Some days, I still don’t know if I’m going to survive. Yet somehow here I am. #decolonize #adoption #abolition #poet #bodymemories #somaticawareness #adoptionsurvivor #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

This is the final episode of 2023, titled “Adoption Lie #4: Love is Enough.” Link in bio! Adoption is not about love. Adoption is about power. Particularly, in the midst of the holiday season, there is a heavy focus on love and gratitude, which can be loaded concepts for Adoption Survivors. In this fifth episode of Everything You Think You Know About Adoption is a lie, we confront the lie that “love is enough.” If Adoption was truly about Love, then it would use Power to strengthen and empower families to stay together. Instead, Adoption leverages Power and weaponizes Love to surveil, destabilize, coerce, and exploit families for the commodification and procurement of children to benefit and profit the privileged. EPISODE 2 of my new podcast @adoptionisalie is available on Spotify! (LINK IN BIO) Today begins the dreaded #NAAM! November is National Adoption Awareness Month, or what I call National Adoption Survivor Month. Each week for the month of November, I will be publishing a new episode @adoptionisalie. To kick off the month, in this second episode, tilted “The Orphan Myth (Part 1),” I confront the lie that I was adopted because I needed a family. The truth is that I already had a family. But it was more economically and politically expedient to sell me across the world than to provide my Korean family with access to the support and resources to stay together. At the core of deconstructing the adoption myth is learning to ask the right questions…Instead of asking “What about all the children that need families?,” we need to be asking, “What about all of the families that need support?” #decolonize #adoption #abolition #prevention #naam #orphanmyth #adoptionpodcast #podcast #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

Hi Community! The first episode is now available on Spotify! Link in bio! In the context of the ongoing gen0c1d3 in Palestine, it remains so crucial to decolonize the adoption narrative. During times of invasion, occupation, disaster, and gen0c1d3, family separation and adoption are weaponized as tools of empire and oppression. Adoption is not the answer. Stop asking, “What about all the children that need families?” and start asking, “What about all the families that need support?” Follow @adoptionisalie to stay up to date with new episodes, related content, and opportunities! In this introduction episode titled “The Call,” I share about the the moment I received a phone call that my Korean parents had been located, and what unfolded in the aftermath. I also explore the reasons and purpose for creating this space. Everything You Think You Know About Adoption is a Lie is a collection of insights, truths, personal anecdotes, poetry, reflections, and thoughts intended to provide a more complex counter narrative to the dominant and overly sanitized and romanticized adoption narrative. The content is a step toward deconstructing common myths used in popular society to uphold and perpetuate the larger Adoption Myth. It is also a call to know the truth about the systems underlying not only the circumstances of my adoption but the historical and geopolitical circumstances of oppression of which adoption is an extension. I hope by sharing what I have learned that together we can continue to tear down the curtain of lies, so that the truth may thrive and grow within our hearts and our communities as we envision and create a future that allows us all to know love, safety, and liberation. #adoptionisalie #adoptionpodcast #decolonize #adoption #abolition #adoptionsurvivor #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familypolicing #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

But I’m sharing it again because it remains ever relevant, particularly in light of the recent closure of Dillon International and the lack of accountability and transparency regarding access to our own adoption histories and files. Please sign the petition (link in my bio) demanding FREE long term access to our adoption history and records. Exile is defined as the state of being expelled or barred from one's native country. Adoption = exile. As a result of being stolen from our Motherlands, and forced to undergo ethnic erasure through the severance of access to our families, language, culture, and origins, Survivors of the Global Adoption Trade are forced to live in exile. I was taught that because I was adopted, aka sold and bought as an infant that I didn’t have any trauma…that I was a blank slate with no memories of my Omma… Now I know that was 100% BULLSHIT. Register for our discussion this Thursday May 25th from 830-10 PM ET. (Link in bio.) @linaleadswithlove (co-creator of @rescriptingthenarrative) @shantalo (founder of @7525impact) and I (@the_empress_han) will be diving deeper into the ways the myth that “Adoption is God’s Plan” has perpetrated profound harm, oppression, and violence upon families and communities. We each bring unique experiences and perspectives having been impacted by white saviorism perpetrated through white American interpretations of religion and spirituality and forced to assimilate into Judaism, Catholicism, and Evangelicalism. #decolonize #godsplan #adoption #abolition #prevention #church #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

Repost from @the_empress_han • Hey Everyone!!! Join @linaleadswithlove and I along with our special guest, Shanta Loecker on May 25th from 830-10 PM EST for our fourth session of our ongoing series, "Everything You Think You Know About Adoption is a Lie." This session we will explore the myth of "Adoption is God's Plan." (You can register using the link in my bio!) Being that May is AANHPI Heritage Month, it is important to acknowledge the profound impact that the Global Adoption Industry has had on AANHPI communities, particularly in the context of the export of colonialism and white saviorism through invasion/war, Christian missionaries, and religion. Yet our experiences and voices as Survivors of the Global Adoption Trade are often missing from the narratives and stories being discussed and shared about the realities of AANHPI communities. In this context, we will be featuring special guest, Shanta Loecker! Born in Kolkata, India, Shanta (she/her/hers) identifies as a transracial international adoptee, immigrant, South Asian American, and Queer cisgender woman. Visit @7525impact or 7525impact.com to learn more about Shanta's work. You cannot justify that some white (evangelical) people in the global north take advantage of poverty and crises (war and disasters) in another country, to buy and kidnap their babies. We saw this in Afghanistan and Haiti. It happened way back in 2004 when Indonesia was struck by a tsunami. There's violence in the fact that rich nations who make war in another country, are the very ones that send their "white saviours" after damage has been done. This continuation of exploiting other countries and people is colonialist and racist. People justify it because of the false saviour narrative, which is a white christian colonialist invention. Even worse: people truly believe that whiteness has the right to destroy and exploit. Racism is at the root of this belief, something white people love to approach as an opinion. It's the same with child trafficking. Time and again non- adopted (or kept) people feel the need *and have the privilege* to say to bought and displaced people: but what about? What if? As if we're not human too. Defending the trafficking of babies just blows my mind. But we are proof of racism and colonialism. And we experience it on an everyday basis. This always strikes me as very odd. And it happens almost every time I mention that I'm adopted. Did you know that adoptive parents do this a lot? And of course, politicians & everyone who likes to use us for their own agendas. It's called infantilization (and continued exploitation) because we can only exist as a concept, an idea that's imprinted in people's brains because of adoption propaganda and whatnot. Actual people with lived experience speaking out at the risk of being bullied and abused takes a lot of courage. Many of us were (are) silenced within our own adoptive families because of whyteness, racism and whyte saviourism. Something else that's often used against us is toxic positivity: why can't you just get over being adopted? Why can't you just be happy? Which, of course, says everything about the depth (🫠) and meaning of happiness to the perpetrators and deniers. To all adopted, sold & bought and displaced people: keep in mind that oppressors want to keep you small and silent. During Suhoor Stories Fitria Jelyta asked if I could explain what colonialism has got to do with current adoption malpractises. I explained that in order to colonize Indonesia, the Dutch tried to destroy the culture by separating children from their families (among other means). Something that is also happening in intercountry adoption. To be more specific, the narrative spun to give the colonizers a false sense (and plight) of morality became powerful christian propaganda: missionaries saving a child from a terrible existence. Here, you can read white superiority towards Indonesian people & culture that they deemed uncivilized. The Dutch also saw and treated Indonesian people as less than human (dehumanized). Much more can be said, but to return to the adoption industry: the same christian propaganda is being used for 'adopting' brown babies. We also call it white saviourism. But who is being saved? And from what? While some things are different now (child trafficking is legal), what stays the same is that families are being destroyed, and children are being displaced to be raised by the white race. And, again: much more can be added here. CW, TW: child abuse, adoption trauma The adoption industry does not make children safer. We need to stop treating adoption as if it’s a “solution” to infertility, abortion, or abuse. When I think of abusers like the Hart women, Brian O’Callaghan, Denise & Thomas Atkocaitis, the Zulocks, I feel sick and enraged. The adoption industry creates more problems. Real solutions address systemic oppression & inequity by creating access to housing, income, healthcare, nutrition, healing, counseling, childcare, parenting support, and education. #adoptionistraumaand #decolonize #adoption #access #abolition #prevention #adoptionindustry #sold #bought #transracialadoption #familyseparation #familypolicing #familyregulation #familysurveillance #familypreservation #adopted #transracialadoptee #internationaladoptee #internationaladoption #adoptee #adoptees #adopteevoices #adoptiontrauma #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #adopteerights #adultadoptees

@the_empress_han and I will be hosting another talk on Tuesday, March 21 at 830PM ET. Register at the EventBrite via our bios. If you missed the inaugural session, you can catch the second session of his new series, " Everything You Think You Know About Adoption is a Lie." Considering that March is Women's History Month, in this session, Mila Kokomos and I are going to discuss the myth that adoption is an alternative to abortion. In the context of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, adoption has again once again been thrust to the forefront of the abortion debate. Too often the Voices of Survivors of the Global Adoption Trade are sidelined, if not completely erased from the conversation. Reproductive Justice disproportionately impacts women and birthing people, yet it is an issue that ultimately has profound repercussions for everyone. #adoption #discussion #transracialadoption #internationaladoption #transracialadoptee #decolonize #familypolicing #familysurveillance #suicideprevention #adoptionistrauma #adoptionisanadversechildhoodexperience #familypreservation #familypreservationissuicideprevention #adoptionistrauma #trauma #grief #loss #msw #familypreservationissuicideprevention #adversechildhoodexperiences #adultadoptees #adopteerights #adopteemovement #adopteevoices #abolition #livedexperience

You may have never thought about the fact that adoption is not just a one time event and that it impacts families intergenerationally. Separating families creates intergenerational loss, grief and trauma. It’s time that we start having this conversation. Let’s not forget adoption is preventable trauma. No family should have to experience this loss, grief and trauma. #familyseparation #familydestruction #humanttafficking #familysurveillance #adoption #intergenerationaltrauma #trauma #grief #loss #adoptionistrauma #decolonize #adoptionisloss #familyloss #motherloss #identityloss #transracialadoption #transnationaladoptee #displaced #transracialadopee #boughtandsold #adopteemovement #msw #rescriptingthenarrative #adopteevoice #adopteerights #adoptionispreventabletrauma #familypreservation #familypreservationissuicideprevention #adoptionisanadversechildhoodexperience #genocide

2/28/2023, 4:13:08 PM

It’s important to think about the language we use to frame conversations. How differently is a conversation framed when family separation, human trafficking, family destruction, displacement and genocide are used instead of adoption? Language is powerful and power and it can be empowering or disempowering. Society very carefully uses certain language around adoption because it paints a certain picture and the word is “comfortable.” I have had adopters and non-adopted peole get mad at me when I don’t use the word adoption. That’s indoctrination and lack of accountability or wanting to deconstruct, unlearn, have empathy and listen. Just remember the lived experiences of adopted and displaced people is beyond the discomfort or anger that you feel. Having our voices heard can be life saving & also life changing. If we truly care about other people then we must be willing to sit in discomfort and listen to the lived experiences of others. We also have to ask why are we angry and uncomfortable. #adoption #humantrafficking #displacement #familyseparation #genocide #msw #rescriptingthenarrative #adoptionistrauma #trauma #grief #loss #adopteevoices #adopteevoice #transracialadoption #transracialadoptee #transnationaladoption #transnationaladoptee #familypreservation #familypreservationissuicideprevention #adopteemovement #adopteetoadoptee #adopteerights #languagematters #adoptionisanadversechildhoodexperience #aces #leadwithlove #decolonize #familysurveillance #reclamation #adopteestories

It's no coincidence that many bought and displaced babies grew up in a religious adoptive family & community.
