Thanks to a flood mitigation program, designed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Union Beach has had drastic improvements to its waterfront. The new sand dunes are 16 to 18 feet high, the beach sand is fresh and there is easy handicap access to this gem of the bayshore. The new dune grass is especially cool. This low-tech processed based restoration (LTPBR) utilizes soil and a variety of native willow species rolled in erosion control blanket which are then staked along the streambank to mitigate erosion while fascines installed in the channels will help reduce velocity during high flow events. Urgent call out! If anyone has the funds to help support a #CommunityBuyOut 🙌 We have managed to raise 137k in less than a week, but we still need to raise another 100k by tomorrow to make an offer for this land. Parts of this land have fields that have been untouched for 15 years and would make excellent wildflower meadows with a huge amount of diversity with the right ongoing management of the site. Other parts could potentially be good for community veg growing and ponds to help prevent flooding further down valley. The land has only been on the market for 1 week, but there's already an offer for it, and the vendors want all offers in by the end of this week. As it's all on very short notice, there is no formal agreement for what would be done with the land, but the driving force for this is to protect these beautiful wildflower meadows as they are a valuable asset in ecological terms. This is from Plantlife: "Species-rich grasslands are extraordinary ecosystems, with native wild plants at their heart. Soils bursting with life, fungal networks covering unknown thousands of miles, carbon uptake, flood mitigation, nutrient-rich additive-free grazing, and the inspiration for iconic artists and writers over the centuries – meadows and grasslands are simply magnificent in many more ways than first meets the eye. Yet a staggering 97% of wildflower meadows and 80% of chalk grasslands have been eradicated since the 1940s, now covering less than 1% of UK land. Of the remaining three percent, 75% exist in small fragments, making them especially vulnerable to eradication. This really is a habitat on the brink." If we're successful with buying this land, the site will have a full botanical survey to help shape and plan the future for this site. Several drains, manholes, and cross culverts were cleaned along Fontabelle, St. Michael over the weekend by contract workers from MTW’s Drainage Division. A team from the Drainage Division also cleaned manholes and drains along Broad Street in the City. While our teams periodically visit districts to clean drainage systems, it is important that you play your part in keeping drains clean and clear of bottles, food containers, plant cuttings, appliances or other garbage. You are also reminded that building in drains can cause blockages which could restrict access to the drains, making it more challenging for our teams to clean. Severe flooding along both forks of the San Jacinto in early May resulted in a bout of finger-pointing among local officials who clashed over poor flood control and mitigation plans. “My neighbor to the north, Montgomery County, needs to do more on flood mitigation because every drop of water that flows from Montgomery County comes into Harris County through Precinct 3,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey said. The commissioner, whose precinct stretches across the top of Harris County, from Tomball to Spring down toward Baytown, said Liberty and Montgomery counties should adopt policies that align with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Atlas 14 study, which helps provide precipitation estimates for areas across the country. The accusation drew quick rebukes from Montgomery and Liberty leaders, who said their counties adopted Atlas 14 guidelines back in 2019. Amid a national push for flood control after Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the Texas legislature ordered the first-ever state flood plan to be created in 2019. Lawmakers tasked the Texas Water Development Board to spearhead the initiative, which split the state into 15 regions. Each area submitted a flood plan last January and then approved in July. For 4-years, EP has been working with the @town_of_provincetown to provide stormwater flood mitigation and resilience to a low-lying area on Court Street. Flood waters in this area are affecting nearby property owners, and vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle access during frequent intense storms. EP completed a complex Hydrologic-Hydraulic 2D Model to size and verify the stormwater pump station size and the surrounding stormwater system. The proposed system consists of stormwater catch basins, stormwater overflow control chambers, 25,000-gallons of underground storage, a prepacked 4,000-gpm stormwater pump station with, and a 16-inch force main that ultimately will discharge into Duck Pond, approximately a half-mile away. The stormwater system on Court Street was integrated into MassDOT Transportation Infrastructure Program (TIP) funded project on Shank Painter Road and Route 6 that EP is currently designing. From rural landscapes to urban centres, flood risks are on the rise in Kenya. Land degradation in sub-Saharan rangelands is omnipresent, with over 90 per cent of rangeland degradation reported in Kenya’s northern drylands. A second year of work has wrapped up for the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia—an ambitious endeavor aimed at reclaiming lost ground and restoring the marsh to its former footprint in an innovative and sustainable way while, among other goals, combating sea-level rise and coastal biodiversity loss. The benefits of marsh restoration extend far beyond ecological renewal, and includes coastal flood protection. After, and before. The transformation of Hanlon Park/Bur’uda from concrete stormwater drain to meandering natural waterway is one of the best examples of regeneration we've seen. This was always a bold project, rethinking traditional flood mitigation strategies (concrete stormwater drain) to create a space that much more closely resembles a natural floodplain. The area has also undergone extensive "rewilding" and has ultimately become a green space destination and community hub. The project has received several awards, and it's a must-visit for any landscape architect or urban planning nerd. Congrats to all involved in this remarkable regeneration project. 🙌 Feel Good Friday 🙌 In the heart of the French River community, something incredible happened. It wasn't just about sandbags and water levels; it was about people with purpose coming together to proactively protect their neighbours' homes and livelihoods. For days, our dedicated Greyshirts, alongside the Fire Department and Public Works, kicked into high gear and put their backs into it, lifting and filling wet, heavy sandbags in the pouring rain. Each bag was a labour of love, knowing it meant another family would be safe from the rising waters. In just a few days of unwavering dedication, our volunteer-led operation made a monumental impact on the community. Together, our team filled a staggering 1,536 sandbags, totalling 53,760 lbs (or 2048 feet), ensuring the safety of four homes! Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way. Wednesday evening, Valerian staff joined with the ICON Engineering team and the City of Broomfield for a community open house to share the draft design for floodplain, stormwater, and multimodal improvements on the Nickel St., W. 3rd Ave., and Garnet St. project in Broomfield. This project seeks to reduce flood risk to existing properties in Broomfield Heights, while improving the pedestrian environment in the project area, by establishing safer walking and biking connections to neighborhood destinations. This draft design builds on alternatives developed in 2023. The DRBC and @pemahq held the second round of in-person Planning Implementation and Grant Development (PIGD) Workshops last week for the Middle Delaware project. The purpose of the workshops is to increase the knowledge and capacity of local governments in Bucks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton and parts of Luzerne counties to tap into federal resources for flood and other hazard mitigation.
