Completed this Mughal tile pattern homework for the 3rd week of my ‘Colour in Context’ course taught by @lisavalkyrie, @jyotikapurwar and @schooloftraditionalarts, experimenting with various approaches. Using Indigo, Cadmium Yellow, Permanent Carmine, Helios Turquoise, Sepia, and White challenged me to work with 7 colors, including bright yellow and orange, which I typically avoid. Defining blue and black from Indigo was particularly challenging. So glad to complete this final homework of this beautiful tile pattern from Shah-I-Zinda Mausoleum, Samarkand before the new series of course starts. Without hesitation, I used turquoise blue, indigo, sodalite, zinc white and leftovers from the previous works. After some hours of work on this one, in and out of a zoom class, I decided to give up. A3 was too small for the many components, and my screen, even at optimal settings, didn't show the lines in a way that my poor eyesight could convey to my brain. Fortunately the phone camera did allow a closer look, but I got further and further behind. It was a learning experience, of course. As a result, I won't be jumping into big projects. So, what is it about this geometry that appeals to me? The challenge of developing a new skill, the chance to use colour, the pleasure of completing a page in a sketchbook (or other small project), being part of a community engaged in this niche subject, the meditative joy of using paint... Catching up slowly ongoing course “colour in context” by @lisavalkyrie and @schooloftraditionalarts, this is the course I have been longing for years. I did a blue colour comparison using primary blue, ivory black and Gofun (similar to white gouache) as core base and tried to add yellow orchre (left side) and red orchre (right side) to see the differences these create. Small changes rise from what seem like big decisions. I'm happy with this now, but it was a different story along the way! The pix are in reverse order, so let's start at the end, pic 5, which is actually the beginning. "Pale black" (ie, grey) - sometimes not pale enough. Sometimes with a drop of another colour mixed in, not enough to be noticeable. Lesson learned: don't stop halfway; when you revive the dried paint it can be tricky to get the same dilution. On, with muted turquoise and very pale ultramarine. "Tone does the work and colour gets the credit" - in this case, no credit to colour because the tone isn't working! Halfway through painting the huge, bald hexagons I tried breaking them up with a simple line shape, and went back to the finished ones with a water brush to remove paint - a subtle effect, not related to the rest of the geometry. Bringing in light between shapes was part of the original plan. With the "sparks" of ultramarine, the pattern started to come to life. The next decision was: more blue on the others, or black? Now, a thin layer of bright turquoise on the four-pointed stars, to make them more visible. Done! This gave me lots of practice with consistency of colour and amount of water on brush. I quite like it now, despite the spiky, planaria-like grey shapes. What gave me the most pleasure was solving the tonal problem - I was ready to give up on it, but one of my precepts is "take it to the end".... Thank you Dr. Katya Nosyreva for teaching brick patterns from the Kharraqan Towers in northern Iran at @schooloftraditionalarts. (For all the process photos please see the previous reel). I modeled the central six units off of the main pattern we learned last week and then transitioned to the alternate pattern we learned at the end of class for the exterior units. I ended up having to sketch it out to figure out a color sequence which ended up requiring four colors. (Now I want to try the rounded ends. They were drawn this way to speed things up but I like the results.) I made a mistake midway through drawing the under-grid and accidentally doubled one of the line sets. Rather than call it a loss of time, I used them to create some of the bejeweled color variations. #geometryathome #bejeweled

Two versions of the recent pattern from Al-Azem Palace - switching negative and positive. Scale (and extent) makes a difference too. The greens are mixtures of phthalocyanine blue (PB15:6) and Naples yellow (PY154, PY65, PW6), Mijello "mission". This mahogany towel rail was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh as part of a guest bedroom suite he created in 1917 for Mr and Mrs Sidney Horstmann of Bath. The design of the towel rail is very similar to one he had made for @78derngate the previous year. This towel rail is currently on display at the @vamuseum in the ‘Crisis and Conflict’ section of the Design 1900-Now gallery. GALLERY LABEL Prisoner-made furniture During the First World War, the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea held one of Britain’s largest internment camps for foreign prisoners of war. To reduce boredom and make use of cheap labour, the prisoners were put to work making furniture and other goods.
