The Robert Mondavi Reserve To Kalon Vineyard 2021 is among the last great Napa wines of the vintage to roll out. Executive Editor Jim Gordon tasted it today and loved both that wine and a tiny production new cabernet made solely from Mondavi heritage clone vines. Winemaker Kurtis Ogasawara and Blake Wood, director of vineyard operations, toured Gordon around the entire 460 acres of vines owned by the winery here in Oakville. 2002 Dominus in spectacular form last night, The star, of course, of the Mouiex new world staple, and Cali sister to the iconic Pomerol, Petrus. As bullish as this red tried to be from the off, it was tempered with a subtlety and poise that kept everything in place, manifesting pure elegance in the glass and inspiring deep conversation amongst its drinkers. Wild dark fruits mingling with almonds, underbrush, and eastern spices. Soft leather, tobacco, and very dark chocolate sitting underneath. An undeniably bresaola characteristic coming in wafts at the half way point, complimented by the Provençal herb aromatics that seemed to season the whole thing, quite profoundly. Tannins perfectly integrated by now and everything else effortlessly corresponding on the palate. At least a 1000 descriptors could have been noted for this wine - a truly special bottle of monumental complexity and unanimous applause at the table. Finn ett fel 🧐 -eller snarare ”en Malbec bland tre Cabernet Sauvignon”😅 Gårdagens blindprovning var en utmaning. Uppgiften var att identifiera druva, land och region. Extra utmaning när tre var på samma druva fast från olika länder och alla fyra (!) hade tydliga toner av svarta vinbär… ett vin var också en blandning. Jag förutsatte att alla fyra var på samma druva (cab sauvignon) iom svartvinbärsdominansen, så började leta markörer för att identifiera land. Det var ju ett misstag visade det sig, iom att nr två var en malbec😆🤯… De tre första släpptes precis på tillfälliga sortimentet. Väldigt trevliga viner allesammans, det fjärde 👉Black Stallion (cabernet sauvignon från Napa 🇺🇸) är ett klassiskt blindprovarvin 🍷🤓. Kul, lurig och utmanande blindprovning, man förutsätter ju att alla antingen är på samma druva eller på fyra olika druvor vilket man såklart inte ska göra! Vinerna: 1.
