Did you know that there is a population of Barn Owls in the wild here in New Zealand? This was indeed news to us!! Thought to have crossed the ditch from Australia as wind-stragglers or stowaways on ships, they can be found in pockets across the country including Kaitaia, West Coast and theyāve even been spotted in Christchurch. Gerard McCabeās āSleeping Barn Owlā is not quite the āodd one outā in his suite of bronze birds currently on show in āFeather / Floraā. Keeping company with Tui, Korimako and Huia (among others) in our space, this magnificent creature has quite the presence. Resting peacefully, eyes closed and one leg tucked away, an endearing pose beautifully realised by this highly skilled sculptor. āRecently, a tourist stayed with my family and she enquired as to why I donāt paint the landscape around me. My reply was that it is too familiar. Leading up to exhibiting at the Westland District Library, I decided to investigate this feeling of familiarity more. My paintings are usually about myself within the landscape. When I look at the mountains surrounding Kowhitirangi, I associate them with many people. My family has lived in the area for many generations. Inter generational stories about family and community and the feelings attached are passed along to me. The mountains of this area hold stories about many people. Iām reminded of their stories when I consider painting the mountains here and it can be overwhelming to think of their feelings associated with this place - love, grief, determination, conflict, sorrow, greed, happiness etc. It is challenging to consider Kowhitirangi without associating it with people who have shaped this place. Initially, I planned to paint the Diedrichās ranges and Mt OāConnor, which backs onto my familyās farm at the Hokitika Gorge. I wanted to share a story about this place. I started drawing out the image and it felt right to stop at the end of the drawing process. By taking away layers I get back to the skeleton or bones of the image. Kind of like taking layers of emotional baggage out and thinking of a simpler time. Keeping it simple seemed appropriate and the right thing to do. I feel that the mountains around Kowhitirangi hold too much emotional energy for me to paint. It is not the right time to tell the story that I wanted to share and perhaps Iām not the right person.ā Written work that accompanies my drawing currently exhibited at the Westland District Library in Hokitika.

NEW IN THE GALLERY >ā ā Bannisterās large steel sculptures, encouraged to naturally oxidize, exude a warm patina rich in earthy ochres, reflecting a sense of time and place within the elements. The initial form is meticulously moulded and then incinerated in a kiln. Casting bronze into the resulting negative space creates a unique replica of the original work, symbolizing the cyclical nature of life.
