Thank you to SCAD fibers alum Tori Myers and Hannah Langford from Perennials and Sutherland, for a Virtual Visit with the SCAD fibers department! Tori Myers, Product Development Designer for Rugs and Hannah Langford, Senior Product Development Designer for Fabrics visited our FIBR 337 Business Practices for Fibers and FIBR 418 Collection Development classes. Tori and Hannah sent our students physical samples of fabrics and carpets, to allow students to have a hands-on experience during the virtual visit. Students learned about the dynamic roles that the designers at Perennials perform in both rugs and fabric. We were all impressed on many levels and were excited to see how much enthusiasm and passion that Tori and Hannah have for their jobs at Perennials. Tori and Hannah also shared information about a summer internship at Perennials. The application deadline is March 15 and decisions will be made in early April. “Fragments in Process” came down last night… the processing can continue. These dyed fragments of natural fibers (cotton, silk, linen, wool) are put in relationship with natural dye materials (madder, weld, indigo, osage, goldenrod, onion skin, logwood, brazil wood, and more) and then are put in relationship with each other through careful hand stitching (Korean Bojagi style seams). At the time of making this work felt about nature and nurture. About relationships—coupling, marrying, building family. The pairs we choose. As well as those we’re paired with, our siblings and our parents. These at once life giving and often fraught relationships, attended to with slow repetitive conversations that bond. And then there are the apparent stacks we wait in, sidelined, but almost more beautiful sitting there, full of possibility. Holding their color in folds from the harsh light that fades it. Every time these fragments are processed through new dye baths and stitching they take on the other’s complexity. We’ll see how these end up—what they need, what they’re drawn to. Internship Spotlight with SCAD Fibers Bea Campbell - This summer I worked at URBN headquarters as Anthropologie’s Home Print and Textile Design Intern. My responsibilities as an intern included coloring prints according to trends and seasonal color palettes, and designing original artworks and repeat layouts for all home categories - including textiles, tabletop, decorative accessories, and décor - appropriate for the concept direction of the brand. I also co-maintained vintage archives and the swatches and samples for print & pattern. One of my favorite things I did this summer was research trends in print to bring ideas to the table, especially for dishtowels. On the more technical side, I worked with Pantone library, color-matching for briefs. I also used Photoshop to make mockups and color adjustments per concept & design team needs, and to recolor CADs for design presentations. The classes that best prepared me for this internship were FIBR 276: Digital Surface Design, FIBER 318: Print and Pattern Development, FIBER 412: Collection Development, and FIBR 448: Fibers for Hospitality Markets. My screen printing classes - FIBR 312 and 412 – also prepared me, because my training in drawing placement pieces and screen printing them onto clothes translated into engineered prints on surfaces that I designed. The biggest takeaway from my internship at Anthropologie this summer was learning more about all that goes into the design process at a corporate company. I found it impactful to meet with different departments while I was there, like the display team, buyers, and apparel designers. Studio Production is a part studio and part seminar class in which students develop a collection of products with a focus on methods of making multiples. Students will also develop their business knowledge in brand development, marketing, pricing work and making a business plan. It's a great class for students that may want to start their own company or work as a freelance designer. The projects in this class are designed to be applied to any niche within fibers, including apparel, accessories, home goods or fine art. Zenith Exports Ltd @zenithexportsltd Role: Print and Pattern Designer This Summer I got an amazing opportunity to intern with a textile company in the South of India, Bangalore, called Zenith Exports Ltd. I have been creating multiple prints and patterns in their studio, alongside the design team. I have been to their factory and seen all the embroidery machines in action and the hand embroidery process as well. I have visited many temples, museums and textile stores that sell the beautiful sarees that all the women wear on a daily basis and for special occasions. Chai time is a religion in India, and it is just too delicious! I brought the best recipe back to keep the tradition going! The food, although it is very spicy, was a delight. I have immersed myself into the culture taking up the traditional classical Indian dance Kathak, characterized by intricate footwork and rhythmic patterns. Learning the art of yoga has been an incredible journey and experience I have gained so much knowledge and insight in the textile industry. Congratulations Kaitlyn Jones (@kj.danae) for the winning cover design for the ITA Cover Competition. This competition is hosted by the International Textile Alliance Educational Foundation. The cover competition chooses a Print, Dobby or Jacquard design that will be applied to the cover to the ITA Showtime Market Show Guide. This design is part of a larger collection called Spatial Opaline that Kaitlyn made in Fibers 418 Collections class Winter 2023. The collection contains both carpet and wallpaper pieces that focus on patterns used in architecture and space. Since graduating, Anne Gates has been a freelance graphic designer working with startups and small teams, within various industries from restaurant menus to branding space tech, fashion to genomics. Course Spotlight: FIBR 410/728 Professor Liz Sargent This advanced textile materials and processes class is only offered once a year! This can be substituted for a directed elective. Textile construction techniques are timeless, occurring throughout various cultures simultaneously through history. We will research and explore various textile structures, all the while considering how to produce responsible materials with potential for creative solutions to some of the issues, we are facing in our culture today. Looking to the future, students will research possible modes of production through machinery or collective communities. From the minimal to the maximum, how can materials be embedded with properties of longevity, hygiene, empathy, and care and how can we as designers participate in these processes? LEE, a Kontoor Brands Company, Greensboro, NC Job Title: Lee Female Denim Intern “Interning at Lee was an extremely fun and knowledgeable experience that will be very beneficial to my career growth. I not only grew my knowledge of the fashion industry, but also the importance of working as a team and building connections.” Most Exciting/help/surprising/fun… The most exciting thing was being able to intern at a global apparel company and to see all that goes into developing multiple clothing/fashion lines. It was fun being able to interact with other interns and people in different departments to see how their roles affect the creating/development process. The most helpful thing was that my team encouraged me to ask questions, give my opinion, and allow me to help make decisions, while also taking their time to explain everything along the way. Anthropologie/ AnthroLiving at URBN in Philadelphia, PA Role: Home Print Design Intern This summer I worked with Anthropologie’s Home Print team, who creates artwork across the home categories. I assisted the team with concepting, research, color matching, editing, and creating artwork digitally and by hand. I also created an original print collection for my summer intern project, which allowed me to use the skills I learned during my time there and from SCAD. The print team consisted of two amazing designers who I could shadow and work closely with. My manager is a SCAD Fibers alum, so it was amazing to talk to her about her experience and get to see what she is doing post-grad. I expressed my interest in the production side of design, so they gave me the opportunity to sit in meetings with buyers and manufacturers to see the full design timeline. Any other interest I had within the home department, I was able to explore by meeting with teams in concept, artist collaborations, and even the creative director. I think my biggest takeaway is to say yes to every opportunity. Also, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Talk to everyone, there are so many people with different backgrounds and talents which lead to other opportunities. You never know who you’ll come across so network and connect! I had an amazing time and am so thankful for the opportunity. Meet Allie Dettmann @dettmanndesigns, a senior fibers major from Yarmouth, Maine Where did you intern? Belted Cow Company, Cumberland, Maine Role: Lead Design Intern This Summer, I worked with the Belted Cow Company’s print and pattern team primarily designing ribbon for pet accessories, belts, flip-flops, and tote bags. My responsibilities included color forecasting, market research, and creating artwork that could be translated into woven ribbon. Most exciting / relevant experience: The most exciting part of this internship was all of the creative challenges along the way. Through hands-on experience, I learned about the revision process for designing ribbon products from start to finish. For example, taking physical artwork and translating it digitally, selecting thread colors, outputting the ribbon design, and finally producing the finished product. It was beneficial to intern with the Belted Cow Company to gain the perspective of print and pattern through the lens of a small business. Key takeaway: Because of my internship, I am currently freelancing my design work and collaborating with the Belted Cow Company to create a Dettmann Designs x Belted Cow Company line. V Magazine and VMan, New York, NY Role: Fashion Assistant Intern “This summer, I interned as a fashion assistant at V Magazine and VMan. As a fashion assistant, my responsibilities included coordinating press samples from designer brands, researching trends to plan photo shoots, and making pulls from designers as to what will be shot for V. The team at V is very small, which allowed me to get to work in multiple areas outside of the fashion department. This included international distribution research, fulfilling orders for the magazine, and creating magazine displays at stores throughout downtown Manhattan. In addition to working at V, I also was hired on for a week-long job as an intern to assist Madonna’s stylist, Eyob Yohannes. This involved using the skills I had learned at V to assist the stylist in a fast-paced environment, where we put together looks for press engagements, editorial work, and personal engagements for Madonna. Since the end of the summer, I have transitioned to a remote editorial intern for V, which allows me to write digital fashion coverage of relevant fashion news as well as show coverage during fashion month. Meet wHannah Sandler (@art_shtuff), a senior fibers major from Toronto, Canada. Where did you intern? Anthropologie at URBN, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA Role: Design Intern - Print and Color Most exciting/relevant experiences: Exploring a new city and work environment was exciting and eye-opening. Working in the Navy Yard, meeting all of the different interns and other creatives from various areas of the company outside of print and color was inspiring, from design, embellishments, and sustainability lenses. I’ve even made connections with a handful of SCAD grads! Being able to work on relevant industry related tasks to print and color gave me a more well-rounded and realistic understanding on the inner workings on translating design to product. The pace if very quick with short turn-around times for design, so it constantly keeps you on your toes. Simultaneously, I had the opportunity to work on a 10-week Intern Project where I created original prints with colorways, print board, color story boards, CADs, color palettes and applications to production through print packages and matching CSI and Pantone. Key takeaway: My biggest takeaway from this summer is to not be afraid to ask questions. There is so much excitement in the unknown, and you have to just put yourself in new situations and always say yes because no matter the outcome, you will be learning something at the end of the day. My weaving final was the Marvelous Mr. Pepo Worm! This is a THIRTY FOOT LONG worm I sewed, stuffed, and woven into a 56” x 40-something inch weaving (it’s been a bit since I wove it!). This piece currently lives in SCAD’s Pepe hall in the weaving room! Final color lab samples! 🤍 I had so much fun exploring all different kinds of techniques this quarter. For my final project samples I focused mainly on color exploration, playing with texture, and technique.
