Pentru mine, arhipelagul acesta care ține în poala lui adâncă 64 de insule și insulițe, este oglinda fidelă a închipuitului meu paradis lumesc. Pe cele mai poetice plaje, de un alb geamăn cu pudra de cretă, am ajuns după o călătorie cu barca-păianjen, urmată de o scurtă plimbare cu caiacul și apoi de o contorsionare a corpului protejat de vesta de salvare. Nu de alta, dar trecerea prin scorburile ascuțite ale peșterilor pentru a ajunge la plaje-lagune nu este chiar o glumă. Am uitat însă subit zgârieturile, cucuiele și frisoanele date de gândul că una dintre peșterile traversate fusese folosită drept loc de înmormântare de către înaintași, când ochii-mi au întâlnit apa aceea caldă, clară, blândă, felurit pigmentată-ba în tonuri de albastru pierdut în verde, ba cu irizații îndrăznețe de turquoise și pete permanente de indigo ițite pe alocuri. Full disclosure: I don't care much for the original "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" song, mainly due to hearing it WAY too much, but listening to the first two remixes on here kind of gave me a new appreciation for the song. You know you’re getting old when you try to do a milk mustache and it just looks like your natural hair color. 😒 #Aerosmith was basically a multi-media conglomerate by the time 93’s #GetAGrip arrived. Like #PermanentVacation and #Pump this is a busy and somewhat overstuffed brain-trust of big-name writers, producers, engineers, and performers - everybody from #JackBlades and #JimVallance to #TommyShaw and #TaylorRhodes to #DesmondChild and #DonHenley drop in to lend a line or a lick and I bought into the hype just like seven million other fans. I rarely spin this album now but I definitely played the shit out of it back then. Sound-wise “Get A Grip” (“GAG” for the unbelievers) trades the polished pop-metal production values of the previous two blockbusters for something a bit grittier and more classic rock chic - but let’s not kid ourselves, there’s nothing edgy or dangerous about any of this stuff. In fact, the songwriting is even more meticulously assembled than before - especially the ballad-heavy back-half with its trilogy of commercial creamsicles: #Cryin, #Crazy, and #Amazing - all of which found a grip on the Billboard Top 40 and all of which I could go the rest of my life without hearing again (along with the monotonous #LivinOnTheEdge). OK, I actually dig “Amazing” but I’m over the rest. These tunes were a road to riches, of course, but there are plenty of potholes in this pavement as well - mostly in the form of middle-of-the-road rockers like #WalkOnDown, #GottaLoveIt, and the Shaw/Blades co-write #ShutUpAndDance which is proof that everything those guys touched didn’t always turn to gold. It’s not all bad though. I still think #EatTheRich, #Flesh, #LineUp, #Fever, and the title track kick ass - just not quite as much as say, #YoungLust or #MonkeyOnMyBack. You can’t argue with success though. This bird perched itself atop the Billboard 200, sold in the multi-millions, and introduced Aerosmith to a whole new generation of kids. No other 70s/80s arena-rock band had anywhere near that level of crossover appeal in the mid-90s. I made a 4 hr set for the great people at 8 Day Montreal ✌️ For this one I was really channeling the 2016 era of dance music, which had a huge impact on my musical journey. That year I attended Melt Music Festival in Germany. One standout performance was by Diynamic’s DJ Phono on the Gremmin Beach stage. His set was a masterclass in slow, deep and vocal infused melodic music. I’d never heard anything like it. Fast forward 7 years and house music has evolved with the times. Social media and the need for instant gratification has led to tempos increasing and unfortunately with that this sound faded slightly. As of late the sound is definitely picking up steam again, so it felt right to bring it back for this set. #Pump is my favorite #Aerosmith album of the 80s and probably my favorite since “Rocks” as well. This one’s a big, shiny pop-metal beast; darker and heavier than #PermanentVacation but filled to the brim with the same kind of hi-tech studio gloss that was all over albums by Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Motley Crue, and Def Leppard at the time. Like “Vacation,” there are songs here I’ve heard more times than I can count but unlike #DudeLooksLikeALady and #RagDoll I still get a jolt from tracks like #JaniesGotAGun, #OtherSide, #WhatItTakes, and especially #LoveInAnElevator with its massive and totally uncharacteristic “Bon Leppard” backing vocals. This will definitely spark some debate but I’ve always considered “Elevator” to be the band’s #BohemianRhapsody given all of its intricate twists and turns. Lyrically it’s cheese but musically it’s like a sleazy little back-alley opera. Anyway, beyond the commercial gravy you’ve got some of the band’s hardest hitting rockers in ages. Anybody who claims these guys got soft once they signed with Geffen really needs to reacquaint themselves with #FINE, #MonkeyOnMyBack, #YoungLust, and #MedicineMan which is the much tougher cousin to #LivinOnTheEdge. By my count there is only one dud here and had the guys dropped the rockabilly influenced #MyGirl and kept #DeucesAreWild the album would be close to perfect. This was the first Aerosmith release I bought and the one I feel truly defines the second half of their career. “Get A Grip” and “Nine Lives” were both huge but I think the band has always been chasing this particular purple dragon. 7x Platinum and deservedly so. Lights, camera, action! 🎬 #PermanentVacation is the album that turned #Aerosmith into Beantown’s version of #BonJovi thanks to a behind-the-scenes dream-team that included #JimVallance, #BruceFairbairn, #DesmondChild, #BobRock, and #HollyKnight. The first five cuts are a total fireworks show of big-bucks marquee-level arena-rock circa 1987. I’ve heard #RagDoll and #DudeLooksLikeALady enough for ten lifetimes but #HeartsDoneTime, #MagicTouch, and #Simoriah still pop the celebratory cork for me no matter how many times I play them. Then, of course, you have #Angel - that dewy-eyed pomp-dipped power-ballad that spawned seven or eight more just like it over the next 15 years. I dig the song but I’ve always felt it was a little too on-the-nose for Aerosmith (see also: Motley’s #WithoutYou). Speaking of Crue, this album (and the next one) have a lot in common with “Dr. Feelgood” not only because Tyler did the backing vocals but also because both bands were apparently clean and sober for the first time in years which I guess is why everyone sounds so reinvigorated. Hell, even Steven has a new and improved vocal delivery. There’s filler, of course, but it’s vibrant, Hi-Fi filler (although I do think The Beatles cover and the instrumental should have been B-sides). All said, it’s just a huge, slam-bang party platter that totally revived the band and the brand and gave them their biggest seller since #ToysInTheAttic twelve years earlier.
