Photograph from Glasgow by Raymond Depardon (2016, Seuil) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! Forty years ago, French photographer Raymond Depardon was commissioned by The Sunday Times Magazine to travel to Glasgow for a feature on its rich and poor. The photos he took were never published. Instead, his bleak but sympathetic depictions of people living among urban deprivation and decay languished in Depardon's archives for more than three decades until dusted off for an exhibition and a book in 2016. The photos, taken during trips in autumn 1980 and the following spring, are now hailed as a unique and outstanding photographic record of a Glasgow that has largely disappeared. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #raymonddepardon #magnumphotos #streetphotography #documentaryphotography #colorphotography #glasgow

Bertien van Manen — A Hundred Summers, Hundred Winters (1994, De Verbeelding) Saddened by the news of Bertien van Manen's passing earlier this week we're taking a look today at what is probably the most well-known book she made. ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! “(...) Through her excellent photographs and her inquiring and humanistic temperament, and with powerful artistic expression, Bertien van Manen shows what historians, writers, sociologists and political scientists argue, that there exist at least two Russias. There is the official, imperial and external Russia, known to us from newspaper headlines, and the one within, the hidden, poor Russia of the anonymous, ordinary people of whose existence Bertien van Manen's moving and revealing album tells.” — Ryszard Kapuscinski #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #bertienvanmanen #femalephotographer #documentaryphotography #streetphotography #colorphotography

Thomas Struth — Portraits (1997, Schirmer/Mosel) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! German photographer Struth is among the artists from the celebrated Düsseldorf School who studied under conceptualists Bernd and Hilla Becher in the 1970s and 1980s. Their rigid, deadpan style of uniform picture making proved a rich starting point, and in maturity Struth’s work excavates the nature of photography itself. Portraits, published on the occasion of Struth’s one-man exhibition at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, contains the artist’s psychologically loaded frontal images of his human subjects. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #thomasstruth #portraits #portraiture #portraitphotography #documentaryphotography #germanphotographer #schirmermosel

To continue the „Teilchenbeschleuniger“ series, I’m happy to announce the launch of the third edition. This time I added two completely new chapters and a new cover I did together with @m3gic3lp8is8n . I also had the opportunity to display the series within the exhibition „Transmit! Publishing as artistic practice“ curated by Luise Arndt @bigcar.smallwheels . The „Teilchenbeschleuniger“ series is about the curiosity and fascination to discover the world around you. For that, the experiment plays a central role. Devices are built, nature is documented, stars are counted, chemicals are mixed, and rockets are lit. In other words, research is a journey into unknown new worlds. Therefore the medium of photography offers very extensive opportunities to explore new dimensions and make discoveries. Far becomes near through astronomy, microscopically small becomes big, and invisible becomes visible through X-ray photography. For the TB series, each chapter follows a visual narrative, which should be explored and researched by the viewer itself, without any given text or content. Third Edition Published by Comsec Books 20,5 cm x 28,2 cm Four booklets /each 16 pages Cover Silkscreen (design with @m3gic3lp8is8n) Pages Riso Binding Bookscrews Each booklet can also be purchased individually 15,- or in the bound version 35,- To order write a mail to [email protected] or DM me #comsecbooks #photobook #photobookjousting #photobookcollectors #photobookcollector #selfpublishing #selfpublished #artistbook #teilchenbeschleuniger #cern #science #sciencebooks #sciencebook #graphicdesign #graphic #graphics #cover

Deanna Dikeman — Relative Moments (2024, Chose Commune) New arrival! Highly recommended. ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! After publishing Leaving and Waving in 2021, which presented only a glimpse of Deanna’s Dikeman’s 3-decade journey to document her family, Chose Commune is proud to introduce the photographer’s larger series in an exhaustive 300-page book: Relative Moments. In Relative Moments, Deanna Dikeman chronicles ordinary moments of her family’s activities. From gardening to cutting cake, from filling up the bird bath to mending a piece of clothing, from mowing the lawn to picking rhubarb, one gets to discover an everyday that might otherwise go unnoticed. In this book, which was generously edited and sequenced — 200 photographs in total — one is not only meant to see the moment shot in one photograph, but all the moments that compose the story. This project captures a visual history of the photographer family’s life, yet, there is an ongoing narrative embedded in these photographs that conveys larger, more universal truths about American culture, familiarity, and the endless source of everyday wonder that surrounds us. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #chosecommune #documentaryphotography #blackandwhite #bwphotography #deannadikeman #femalephotographer #americanphotographer @deannadikeman

This is a signed copy too! ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! For the last fifteen years, Gregory Halpern has been photographing in Omaha, Nebraska, steadily compiling a lyrical, if equivocal, response to the American Heartland. In loosely-collaged spreads that reproduce his construction-paper sketchbooks, Halpern takes pleasure in cognitive dissonance and unexpected harmonies, playing on a sense of simultaneous repulsion and attraction to the place. Omaha Sketchbook is ultimately a meditation on America, on the men and boys who inhabit it, and on the mechanics of aggression, inadequacy, and power. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #gregoryhalpern #omahasketchbook #mackbooks #documentaryphotography #sketchbook #americanphotographer #magnumphotos

Carolyn Drake — Internat (2017, Self published) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! This work was made in collaboration with a group of women who were labeled as disabled as young children and grew up isolated in a Soviet-era institution on the edge of a forest in western Ukraine. Not allowed to leave the premises, we worked inside the classroom where they spend their days and in front of the concrete wall surrounding the facility. The photographs imagine ways to transcend the physical boundaries of place, invoking fairy tale while rooted in the details of documentary reality. The project explores questions about gendered power, freedom of the imagination, and the construction of normal female behavior. The artwork that opens and closes the book was made over the pages of a book about Taras Shevchenko, a 19th century Ukrainian artist, ethnographer, serf, peasant, poet and imprisoned political figure who is widely revered today. Forbidden by from making photos on several of her visits, Drake instead invited the women to paint on the artwork made by Shevchenko and his male contemporaries, re-imaging the published pages of history with their own hands. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #carolyndrake #internat #selfpublishbehappy #documentaryphotography #americanphotographer #femalephotographer

What started as a five-year project ended up lasting 15 years and came to be the book España Oculta (Hidden Spain) published in 1989. Check it out! ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! "The body of work, States of America, is the photographic legacy of one of the UK’s leading photographic talents whose untimely death in 1991 ended prematurely the highly promising career of a distinctive and powerful photographic voice. Michael Ormerod was born in Cheshire in 1947. He lived in Newcastle, but spent many years travelling America. Fascinated by the American image, and following in the footsteps of Robert Frank, Ormerod took to the American West to find a washed out dream of capitalism. His images capture a strange juxtaposition of an American beauty tainted by a hidden sense of menace and corruption. The photographs are understated, but show an unseen America, where the industrial heartland is decaying, highways stand empty and towns are deserted. The subjects of Ormerod’s work are the disenfranchised. A teenager cycles through her neighbourhood wearing a Halloween-style hockey mask, a Native American man stands in a graveyard, their expressions are unreadable." #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #michaelormerod #britishphotographer #americanroadtrip #streetphotography #documentaryphotography #americanwest

Chris Killip — Skinningrove (2024, STANLEY/BARKER) Now in stock! We're very happy to have a few copy of Chris Killip latest book. It's a lovely book and comes highly recommended! ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! The village of Skinningrove lies on the North-East coast of England, hidden in a steep valley it veers away from the main road and faces out onto the North Sea. The photographs that Chris Killip made of its, fiercely independent hard working-class community, between 1982 and 1984 are possibly Killip’s most intimate work. “Like a lot of tight-knit fishing communities, it could be hostile to strangers, especially one with a camera. “Now Then” is the standard greeting in Skinningrove; a challenging substitute for the more usual, “Hello.” The place had a definite edge, and it took time for this stranger to be tolerated. My greatest ally in gaining acceptance was Leso (Leslie Holliday), the most outgoing of the younger fishermen. Leso and I never talked about what I was doing there, but when someone questioned my presence, he would intercede and vouch for me with, “He’s OK.” This simple endorsement was enough. “I last photographed in Skinningrove in 1984, and didn’t return for thirty years. When I did I was shocked by how it had changed, as only one boat was still fishing. For me, Skinningrove’s sense of purpose was bound up in its collective obsession with the sea. Skinningrove fishermen believed that the sea in front of them was their private territory, theirs alone. Without the competitive energy that came from fishing, the place seemed like a pale reflection of its former self.” — Chris Killip #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #chriskillip #skinningrove #stanleybarker #britishphotographer #streetphotography #documentaryphotography #blackandwhite

Nick Waplington — Living Room (2024, Jesus Blue) They're here! Very excited to have our hands on this republished edition of Living Room. Published under his own imprint, Jesus Blue, the new edition is faithful to the old design but carries a completely different edit and a number of different photographs. "In reaction to -- as Nick Waplington puts it -- "the grainy, downtrodden, black-and-white interpretation of working-class life" one generally sees, Living Room offers lushly coloured glimpses of the communal spirit, fired by the joys, mishaps and adventures of family life. Over the course of four years Nick Waplington became intimately acquainted with the working-class families in Nottingham, England. He spent countless hours becoming part of the boisterous chaos of their lives, photographing them with sympathetic spontaneity. This unusual volume, which opens from the top up, takes the reader to Israel’s Dead Sea, the Mali River in Niger, the North Sea of Iceland, South Korea and Biarritz, as Gruyaert’s sensitive photos record the subtle chromatic vibrations of the edges of the Orient and the Occident. Photograph from Invasie Praag 68 by Josef Koudelka (2008, Mets & Schilt) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! The events leading up to the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia were, for many observers looking back, inevitable. After two decades of oppressive Communist rule under the auspices of the Soviet regime, the country was ready for radical change. When Alexander Dubček was elected as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia the politician seized the opportunity for democratic reform. A period of ‘liberalization’ known as the Prague Spring was enacted, allowing an expansion of citizen civil rights and liberties, partial democratization, and decentralization of the economy. Restrictions on press freedom, travel and free-speech were also loosened. All much to the vexation of the USSR, who, in between failed negotiations with Dubček, watched closely. On August 21, 1968, forces from five of the countries grouped in the Warsaw Pact invaded. Tanks flooded Prague’s streets as residents buffered the sidewalks and buildings, protecting the Czechoslovak Radio Centre and destroying street-signs to misdirect the Eastern Bloc invaders. During the political turbulence, Josef Koudelka was moved to document his country during the upheaval. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #josefkoudelka #invasion #documentaryphotography #streetphotography #blackandwhite #bwphotography #magnumphotos #czechrepublic

Robert Adams — From the Missouri West (1980, Aperture) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! These views of the American West, made by Robert Adams between 1975 and 1983, evoke a wide range of memories, myths and regrets associated with America’s final frontier. In the nineteenth century, that frontier began at the Missouri River, beyond which lay a landscape of natural grandeur and purity, challenging the spirit and promising redemption. At the time the pictures were made, the hand of man had not so much disfigured as domesticated that paradise, leaving its mark of intrusion almost casually, with the assurance of absolute triumph. Adams recorded this intrusion with neither judgment nor irony; the land he shows has simply been changed, reduced, made ordinary. Yet a second look makes it apparent that the hand of man has, after all, its limitations. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #robertadams #blackandwhite #bwphotography #americanphotographer #landscapephotographer #aperture

Mark Steinmetz — Past K-Ville (2018, STANLEY/BARKER) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! Mark Steinmetz’s Past K-Ville continues the poetic journey that began in 15 Miles to K-Ville. This new collection of photographs dates from the mid-1990s and was made on road trips throughout the American South: Memphis, Atlanta, New Orleans, Chattanooga, and Athens, Georgia. Spray-painted rumours of romance punctuate a world comprised largely of teenagers and young couples. The work was made while Steinmetz received support from a Guggenheim Fellowship. "I love the South for its warmth and chaos. The vegetation down here grows rampant; the light is softened by humid air. The people are for the most part friendly and they are comfortable in their bodies. They tend to be more open to being photographed by a stranger. The unexpected happens here a lot." — Mark Steinmetz #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #marksteinmetz #pastkville #documentaryphotography #blackandwhite #bwphotography #americansouth

Ruth-Marion Baruch & Pirkle Jones — Black Panthers 1968 (2002, Greybull Press) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! In 1968, FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover vilified the Black Panthers as the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States. That same year photographers Pirkle Jones and wife, Ruth-Marion Baruch, documented the Black Panthers for an exhibition at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Their hope was to expose the public to the Panthers as they saw them-symbols of pride and strength-rather than the way they were being portrayed in the media. Jones and Baruch were given unprecedented access to the inner circle of the Black Panther Party. At intimate meetings, family gatherings and public demonstrations, we witness, through these incredibly moving photographs, a unique crusade for dignity and self-definition. Black Panthers is a historic documentation of this fascinating movement, so challenging and controversial to our culture that it was virtually erased from established texts and American history books. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #ruthmarionbaruch #pirklejones #blackpanthers #documentaryphotography #bwphotography #femalephotographer #filmphotography

This catalogue, designed by Koudelka, was published to accompany exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Athens and London. The book of Koudelka’s photographs is entitled Periplannissis: Following Ulysses’ Gaze. Periplanissis is the Greek word for wandering. In the book’s introduction, Alain Bergala, who was working at Magnum Photos at the time, writes of beginning to receive Koudelka’s images: “Slowly, as the days went by, some of us began to dream of a totally new, imaginary film based on those photos, an illusory elliptic, sublime film. This meant of course that when it was shown to us we were the worst viewers, the least receptive to the beautiful picture Angelopoulos had directed. No film, no matter how real and complete, can resist a phantom one put together dreamily out of a few mystical photographs, most of which did not have a direct bearing on the shooting.” #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #josefkoudelka #documentaryphotography #filmphotography #movie #periplanissis #panoramaphotography

Luigi Ghirri — The Map and the Territory (2018, MACK) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! Through the course of the 1970s and 1980s, Luigi Ghirri pursued his extraordinary project, open-ended and mercurial, marked by empathy for the changing everyday spaces of his time. Over the course of his short career, Ghirri would produce a vast body of photographs without parallel in the Europe of his time and numerous writings which would have an indelible impact on the history of photography. The focus of this project is on Ghirri’s quietly compelling project to create a new kind of geography, located in his fascination with representations of the world, in the form of reproductions, pictures, posters, models and maps. The mediation of experience through images in an Italy poised between the old and the new was, for Ghirri, an inexhaustible terrain to survey – “a great adventure into the world of thinking and looking, a wonderful magic toy that miraculously manages to combine our adult awareness and the fairy tale world of children…a never-ending journey through great and small, through variations and the realm of illusions and appearances, a labyrinthine specular place of multitudes and simulation." #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #luigighirri #italianphotographer #documentaryphotography #streetphotography #colorphotography #italy #mackbooks #mack

Gilles Peress — Telex Iran (1997, Scalo) We got another copy! ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! "Gilles Peress has intransigently documented the darkest chapters of modern history, from the Troubles in Northern Ireland to the mass graves in Bosnia and Rwanda. In 1979, he went to Iran to photograph the revolution at its height, during the hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. He captured the chaos and the contrasts between the various political and religious circles of influence, the turmoil in the cities, but also everyday scenes of trivia, irony or violence. This work, in a reflexive, very controlled photographic language, resulted in the book Telex Iran (published by Aperture in 1984), now considered a major work in the history of photography. In it, Gilles Peress plays on categories and genres, juxtaposing images and texts in such a way as to create a dialectic that is at once tense and open, and reveals political and civil reality in all its complexity. Republished in 1997 by Scalo, the book has lost none of its seismic and incisive character and has remained highly topical in light of the most recent episodes in Iran’s turbulent history." #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #gillesperess #telexiran #magnumphotos #magnumphotographer #iran #documentaryphotography #streetphotography #blackandwhite #bwphotography

Garry Winogrand — Winogrand Color (2023, Twin Palms Publishers) Last copies! ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! "“We have not loved life.” Winogrand made the photographs in this book in defiance of this self-appraisal. A loving spirit charges and elevates picture after picture, riding an emotional circuit that sweeps from empathy to affection to outright elation, extending across two decades of work made mostly in broad daylight, on the street, on the road, at the beach, in color. Garry Winogrand is known primarily for his spontaneous and energetic street photography in black-and-white. What is lesser known is that Winogrand also shot more than 45,000 color slides between the early 1950s and late 1960s. These photographs were often taken between assignments, when the photographer, working on his own, developed and refined an approach to his medium that was increasingly open, independent, and radical. He routinely photographed with two cameras strapped around his neck, one loaded with color film, the other with black and white. Winogrand Color presents 150 photographs selected from the archives at the Center for Creative Photography by the American film director, Michael Almereyda and former Museum of Modern Art curator, Susan Kismaric. It is the first monograph dedicated to the artist's rarely seen color work." #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #garrywinogrand #streetphotography #colorphotography #filmphotography #winogrand #americanphotographer

Gruyaert opposes the hustle of the city with a pared-down, yet intense, nature. Van Manen’s restless imagination has, in the past, taken her to Russia, China and the Appalachians. Beyond Maps and Atlases continues, and deepens, that sense of a continuous journey into place and belonging. During her visits in Ireland she stayed in the homes of strangers, mostly other photographers living across Ireland, who became friends with van Manen and made work alongside the her. Photograph from Images à la Sauvette by Henri Cartier-Bresson (2018, Steidl) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! The Decisive Moment—originally called Images à la Sauvette—is one of the most famous books in the history of photography, assembling Cartier-Bresson’s best work from his early years. Published in 1952 by Simon and Schuster, New York, in collaboration with Editions Verve, Paris, it was lavishly embellished with a collage cover by Henri Matisse. The book and its images have since influenced generations of photographers. Its English title has defined the notion of the famous formal peak in which all elements in the photographic frame accumulate to form the perfect image. Paired with the artist’s humanist viewpoint, Cartier-Bresson’s photography has become part of the world’s collective memory. This new publication is a meticulous facsimile of the original book. The people rendered at 1000th of a second, are working through the night, pushing towards a smartphone driven modernity. “I kept feeling as though I could have been in any number of other countries at a given time. Though the windows I felt the past and future collide. The contradiction, beauty, chaos and hope. Photograph from Hardtack by Rahim Fortune (2024, Loose Joints) ✖️ For availability & more details, please visit wolf-books.com or check the link in bio! Flour, water, and salt. These are the sole ingredients that make Hardtack: a Civil War-era food long-associated with survivalism, land migration, and its extremely long shelf life. Drawing from this history as a metaphor for the long-enduring nature of Black culture and traditions, Hardtack uncovers the roots that tie Fortune's native landscape to the conflicts and nuances associated with the post-emancipation Americas. In the follow-up to his breakout monograph I can't stand to see you cry, Fortune borrows from the language of vernacular and archival photography to interrogate the historical relationship of his community to photography; rooted in the landscape, Fortune often uses sites of historical and cultural interest as a guide but not a subject, implying the deep ties that bind modern Black communities resiliently to their regions, in the face of both adversity and joy. #photobookjousting #photobookcollector #photobooklovers #photobook #bookstore #rahimfortune #hardtack #loosejoints #documentaryphotography @rahimfortune
