Super excited to display a selection of commemorative miners’ plates from my collection at the best bar in London Town @thesociallondon. British culture has a curious and creative link with commemoration, and there is no more visual or idiosyncratic example of this than the commemorative plates of mining communities. Often used to mark everything from historic coal production milestones to championing their collective successes in their communities, these ceramic plates on show served their political struggles. With a distinct vernacular and unique visual aesthetic, these plates subvert their original purpose of commemoration into activism. Oh what a night! @roughtradebooks brought a joyful celebration of their literary world to Southbank Centre last weekend and completely dispensed with the formal structure usually associated with such events. @fran_thakorlal kicked things off with a terpsichorean treat while @marceldzama's Pink Moon looked on, brought to life by @studio_dialect and addressing the crowd with a voice that could only come from Jarvis Cocker. And then there were captivating readings by the best poets around, namely @sha_ray_ray1, @okwonga, @salenagodden and @richardjphoenix before @imightbesheenapatel and @mark.leckey presented an audio re-modelling of video I’m a Fan . Then it was the turn of @gwennosaunders and Women Against Pit Closures Choir with a powerfully moving rendition of Women Of The Working Class that took me right back to the bitter struggle I witnessed up North before Jarvis Cocker vividly took me back to my nights out in Sheffield in the 80s. (More of that shortly!) This left @heartnsoulart's Electric Fire to close proceedings and they succeeded in getting people up on their feet for a boogie. Amazingly, all of this was compared completely brilliantly by Southbank Centre's own @lilyblacksell. Bravo to you! Flashback to Flashback: Parties for the people, by the people ⏪ In 2020 Uncultured Creatives ‘Flashback’ built a digital archive of ‘acid house’ activities manifesting in Blackburn and East Lancashire from 89-91. The archive contains over seven hours of oral histories, exclusive photographs, flyers and ephemera, intended to function as a future archive of a working class phenomenon; in the model of the short films of Mitchell and Kenyon which created a time capsule of 1890’s Northern England. Uncultured Creatives extended this research in collaboration with Rough Trade Books and designer Craig Oldham, through a publication that was released during the 2021 British Textile Biennial. Inviting writers to respond to the Flashback archive, this publication also features an exclusive collaboration with design studio ‘Dorothy’ who produced a limited edition print mapping the location of Blackburn parties. Contributors include Adelle Stripe, Fergal Kinney, Jamie Holman, Alex Zawadzki, Anna Wood, Emma Warren and Bob Singh. Artist Jamie Holman’s most recent show at The Second Act, ‘24 Hands’ was an offshoot of the research conducted during this time. Some of the photographs used as references for the painted horses in this show were taken by a police photographer who was interviewed as part of the Flashback archive. Visions’ (Curators Hanne Hagenaars, Gijs Assmann, Wouter Prins and Johanneke Uphoff). This would not have been possible without the loan of the amazing Patricai Berger, who generously lent Museum Krona three embroidered works by Madge Gill. And infinite thanks to Sophie Dutton, whose book ‘Madge Gill by Myrninerest’ lovingly and enchantingly unlocked Madge Gill’s work...: Nothing but gratitude! Madge Gill created drawings and embroidered tapestries. She is undoubtedly one of the world’s most highly regarded self-taught artists. Inextricably linked to Gill is Myrninerest, her spiritual guide. On March 3, 1920, at 38 years old, Gill was first ‘possessed’ by this spirit with whom she remained in contact for the rest of her life. During these trances, she made frenzied improvisations with an almost hallucinatory quality and produced an extraordinary number of works of art, mostly drawings in ink on paper. -1; Madge Gill. The birdhouse in my soul is still currently a bit echoey and full of old nests...and probably bird poo. So I've been turning to my poetry shelf because that's always a lifesaver. This poem by the beautifully insightful and honest Salena Godden really spoke to me today, and I think/hope will be a hand on the shoulder for a few of us who are struggling. He collaborates with musicians and artists on installations, sound art, spoken word and performance projects in places such as a submarine dock, shipyard warehouse, derelict townhouse, cobbler’s shop and boating lakes and he’s a collagist and assemblage maker. Rough Trade Books recently published his pamphlet, ‘Deliria’ which tells the true story of one wild night in Porto where things got slightly out of hand. The sequel to Ghost Town is out in 2024 and after that he’s going to attempt/ fail to write Lucid Dreamer, the definite hallucinatory history of Liverpool’s counterculture. Some very proud news. In Loving Memory of Work: A Visual Record of the UK Miners’ Strike 1984-85 is now available via @roughtradebooks. This book is probably the most personal piece of work I’ve ever done and epitomises so many things impossible to list here. I’m proud of it and more importantly proud of the community and class it represents and is for. I’ve been fortunate that Rough Trade Books support this book and have allowed me to revise and expand upon it. It now features a lot more material from my collection including a special series on repurposed physical objects that are some of the most creative pieces of protest I’ve seen. There’s also a new essay on recent events such as Brexit and the Red Wall and how these are linked to the loss of industry in northern working class communities. If you can please support. La storia è frammentata e non segue un arco narrativo cronologico. Si affrontano, in maniera informale, tempi quali il razzismo, la prevaricazione all’interno delle relazioni, sesso e precarietà. La protagonista sbatte in faccia al lettore la supremazia bianca nel mondo dell’intrattenimento, la sottomissione volontaria alla quale si sottopone e l’egoismo di un essere umano.
