The name of this particular plot “Amoureuses” means “Lovers”, which gives birth to all sorts of romantic ideas. Nobody today can really give a convincing reason for the nomenclature of the vineyard. In 1948, however, Camille Rodier stated: In Burgundy, a wine containing the word amour must be a great aromatic wine; full of fire and sap. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses covers 0.53ha with the oldest vines in the vineyard which are over 60yrs old. Their youngest vines were planted in 1966, while the other majority were planted between 1954 and 1956 with soil primarily made up of a layer of red clay of about 30 to 50 cm in depth lying over a compact limestone “slab” with very little fissuring. Domaine Jean-Yves Bizot was technically founded by Jean-Yves’ grandfather, who bought up a small 2.5 hectares of vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, on the side to his career as a doctor. His son followed suit in career, and it wasn’t until 1994 when Jean-Yves decided to take on winemaking as a full-time job that the domaine came into its own. Having added an extra hectare in 2007, Jean-Yves now cultivates his wines in his own unique style. The first thing he did once getting into the wine maker’s shoes was to “unlearn” everything he learnt at school. He adopted a very minimalist winemaking approach. All the domaine’s wines are vinified as whole cluster and the fermentation is done in brand new wooden vats from Tonnellerie Rousseau at as low temperature as possible. He uses in most cases no sulfur at all and his first vintage without sulfur was 1998. All the wines from all appellations (from generic Burgogne to the Grand Cru) are aged in 100% new oak and the wines are bottled barrel by barrel without assembling blends. Domaine Bizot, Vosne Romanee 1er Elise Fermouche 2018; An ultra small cuvée of 398 bottles produced for this vintage only. Bizot’s Elise Fermouche is only made in certain vintages using one of their two Echezeaux lieux dits plots - Les Treux and Les Orveaux, but for his commercial reasons, it’s not labeled as Echezeaux. Most often, depending on the yields, only the wine from Orveaux is marketed as Echezeaux. André Cathiard originated from Savoie arrived in Burgundy to work with the imperious Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Domaine Lamarche, which forged its glorious reputation later when he started his winery, Domaine Cathiard in the 1930s when their fruit was sold to local négoçe as was common back in those days. André ran the estate from 1969 until 1985 with his son,Sylvain, where he began to separated with his father to start his own small domaine until his father’s retirement, Sylvain could take back the family vineyards on a renting agreement before taking over his father’s own vines in 1995. Since 2006, Sylvaine’s son, Sebastien has joined him at the domaine with solid resume of training in Chablis, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte and in New Zealand. Sebastien’s first vintage fully in charge was 2011 and during these years he oversee the construction of a new winery and cellars which were completed in 2008. Sebastien’s philosophy has always been that hard work in the vineyards is the key parameter for making great wines. Once arriving to the domaine, the fruit is completely destemmed after rigorous sorting. Following Sebastien’s belief that less new wood would create more terroir-driven wines, the use of new oak in all Cuvées is being reduced gradually except for the RSV where 100% new wood is still being employed. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard & Fils, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts were made from 0.75 ha vines that were planted in 1972 in deep red clay soil, vinification were done with 100% de-stemmed, 10-day cold maceration and 10-20-day ambient yeast fermentation in tank with no added SO2. During his mid-twenties, Jacques Seysses left his family-owned biscuit manufacturing company to pursue an exciting life as a winemaker. Jacques began his new career as an apprentice to Gérard Potel at Domaine de la Pousse d’Or. With just two harvests there, Gérard Potel taught him the essentials of his craft and also introduced him to some of Burgundy’s most revered winemakers such as Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Charles Rousseau of Domaine Armand Rousseau. In 1967, Jacques Seysses purchased Domaine Graillet in Morey-Saint-Denis and renamed it as Domaine Dujac. From only 5 hectares in 1968, the estate gradually expanded to 11 hectares in 1977, and then reached 15.5 hectares in 2005. Since 1986, with the desire to protect the terroir and improve quality, Domaine Dujac has been in lutte integer, a viticultural regime that combines practices from organic farming, biodynamics and IPM which allows each vineyard to produce the finest fruit possible while preserving organic balance and the integrity of the land. Jacques also developed his own proprietary protoco by using traditional winemaking with modern techniques such as maximizing the unique terroir of each site in the vineyard and exploring innovative methods in the winery to preserve the exceptional fruit that his vineyards produced. As the estate is transitioning from one generation to the next, Jeremy Seysses gradually took over from his father Jacques after he started working at the domaine in 1998 together with his wife, Diana and his brother, Alec. Domaine Dujac, Clos de La Roche Grand Cru comes from 1.46 ha plots of vines that are grown on soils of Clay & limestone which have been organically farmed since 2001, lying between the village of Morey-Saint-Denis to the south and Gevrey-Chambertin to the north. Domaine Rene Engel was founded in 1921 by Rene Engel. The Engel family were an extremely famous winemaking family in Burgundy with 3 different generations of winemakers. The first-generation winemaker, Rene Engel was an vinification expert in Burgundy and had taught a large number of famous winemakers such as the legendary Henri Jayer. The second-generation winemaker, Pierre Engel took over the winery in 1949 and founded Groupe des Jeunes Professionnels de la Vigne de Bourgogne to promote the development of the wine industry and served as the mayor of the Vosne-Romanée village for two terms. Philippe Engel, 3rd generation winemaker entered in 1974 and officially took over the winery in 1981, other than adhering to the family’s traditional vinification methods such as fully de-stemmed and restricting the usage of new barrels, he also adapted to some of the new concepts to further improve the quality of the wine like applying a sorting table, having a lighter extraction and limited production. Rene Engel, Clos-Vougeot 2004 was the flagship of the domaine which came from a 1.37ha single plot, very well situated on the upper-mid slopes just south of the domaine itself and the last vintage made by him.
