🌸 Breaking the Barriers of Shame🌸 For South Asian women, emotional guilt and shame can be major barriers to prioritizing their own needs. Shame is influenced by the concept of honor and the fear of stepping outside the community’s belief system. Speaking up about individual needs or breaking away from traditions often leads to questions like: “What will people say?” Being told they will bring shame and dishonor to the family. Women in South Asian culture carry the heavy responsibility of this shame. From early childhood, the idea of shame is instilled in them, often through subliminal messages. Even if not openly stated, the pressure is clear. Held responsible for upholding the family and community’s honor. Shame is deep-rooted and impacts the very identity. Overcoming it requires deep, internal healing work. Brene Brown explains that there is a profound difference between shame and guilt. Guilt is adaptive and helpful—it’s holding something we’ve done or failed to do up against our values and feeling psychological discomfort. In contrast, shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging. Shame convinces us that something we’ve experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection. Shame is not helpful or productive. In fact, it’s more likely to be the source of destructive, hurtful behavior than the solution or cure. 🌼 Strategies to Overcome Guilt and Shame: ➡️ Mindfulness & Self-Compassion: Be aware of your emotions without judgment and practice self-kindness. ➡️ Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize your needs without feeling guilty. ➡️ Seek Support: Connect with supportive communities or therapists who understand your cultural context. ➡️ Reframe Self-Care: Understand that self-care makes you a more present and effective caregiver. Self-love is a responsible choice, not a selfish one. Let’s recognize the need for self-care and begin the journey of healing. 💪❤️ #healing #selfcare #selflove #mentalhealth #southasianwomen #southasianwomenempowerment #shame #therapist #therapy #guilt

Ckikankari work from Lucknow, a capital city Uttar Pradesh state of India. This intricate work from artisans primarily hand embroidered goes all the way back to 200 years, flourished in Mughal Court. One of my favourite embroidery work, specially in pastels colours, there is not a single color which I can say that I didn’t wear in #chikankari . However I never wore the saree in chikan work so that in my list if anyone is making notes about gift ideas to me.😊 One elegant saree and painting in black, beauty in itself. TWO ROADS - This weekend ! "Afreena lives in Woodley, a little suburb nestled in between Hyde and Bredbury. Bredbury is where she goes to christenings at St Mark’s Church. Aside from the hotel currently housing asylum seekers, Bredbury is pretty white. Once again, most women who are married or even in relationships are single mothers. Most of the child raising is done by the mother instead of the father. The father doesn’t change diapers, feed the kid, help with homework. All the labor division is just given to the mother while the father gets to go on living his life on his own terms without any responsibility of raising the child. [Down the Drain, Julia Fox]

Do you struggle to lose your mid section? As desi women, we know our mid sections can be a real insecurity. This is exactly how my client was feeling. Frustrated with a lack of confidence. 5 months in. She is now a desi woman who has really changed her mindset and body too. She had the ‘typical’ desi body where the majority of the mid section holds fat. With some structure, routine and accountability. We are now dress sizes smaller and still eating sabji and roti 2-3x a week! With my 1:2:1 coaching, I supported my client throughout her journey, taught her the sustainable way to lose fat and how to manage her new routine and structure. If you are ready to reduce your mid section fat. Today is Sita’s birthday. Sita’s enduring legacy has shaped Indian culture for generations, portrayed as the perfect wife, the definition of devotion. In the original, she was kidnapped, taken to Lanka and held hostage until Ram, Hanuman and his army of monkeys save her. Why would a Goddess need to be saved? This powerful question called me to create Sita’s Story, an immersive, narrative audio experience that reframes Sita as a figure of immense strength who ultimately defines her own meaning of devotion. I had the honor of voicing Sita in this project, and with a stellar cast, including @shezi.sardar @gayatribahl @nitinmadan212 @radhikarao77 and the only and only Jaiden Patel, we together show how Sita’s transformation is one that we can all learn from. You can listen to Sita’s Story in the link in my bio or sitasstory.com. It’s 51 minutes of beautifully produced audio - listen on your next walk and if you like it, please share. This was a passion project, funded by me and @lata.patel.376 as a gift for all #southasianwomen. ❤️✨

🌟Here's how career-focused and ambitious South Asian can reclaim their voice and authority, one phrase at a time. 🌟 👩🏽‍💼 The very first thing I teach my clients is to drop the word "feedback" from their vocabulary. Let me explain why. 🧠 Smart and intelligent people always look for ways to grow and improve. They ask their peers, bosses, and leaders for their insights. There's nothing wrong with seeking advice. However, I take issue with the word "feedback." The moment you ask for feedback, you're tipping the balance. You're projecting yourself as someone seeking validation rather than someone seeking perspective. 🤔 When you ask for feedback, you unintentionally imply that you see the other person as the expert and yourself as the novice. This dynamic can lead to others assuming a higher position and potentially patronizing you. 🌟 Instead, try these empowering phrases: "Hi John, I would like to get your perspective on this flowchart, specifically steps 5 & 8." "Help me understand what you are seeing that I can't." "What insights can you give me regarding working with Linda? "Based on your experience, reflect back to me, what you would do differently and why." "Can you share some tricks and tips to put my findings persuasively?" NOTE: Be as 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 as you can be when asking for insights. That positions you as an expert who is looking for only a few things to make something better vs. being perceived as someone who is unsure of herself. 💪 By shifting your language, you shift the power dynamic. You're not seeking validation; you're seeking valuable insights. You're not saying, "I'm not great at this," but rather, "What insights can we uncover together that I may have overlooked? 🚀 Let's reclaim our voices and our authority in the workplace. Your intelligence and expertise deserve to be recognized and respected. Remember, you are not looking for validation; you are looking for perspectives that will help you grow even more. #Empowerment #SouthAsianWomen #ProfessionalDevelopment #ConfidenceCoaching #ChangeTheConversation #Leadership

Punjabi princess, possibly from Patiala state (Hand-painted by Carl Vandyk, Circa 1900) Patiala was a self-governing princely state of the British Indian Empire, one of the Phulkian States, and was founded by Ala Singh in 1763. Ala Singh passed away two years later, leaving the throne to his grandson Maharaja Amar Singh. The painting likely dates from the reign of either Maharaja Rajinder Singh (reign 1876-1900) or Maharaja Bhupinder Singh (reign 1900-1938). Patiala State acceded to the Union of India upon Indian independence and partition in 1947. Photograph: Peter bance collection Caption: @thepunjabarchives ______________________________________ #patiala #punjab #indianprincess #indianart #punjabart #indianroyalty #patialashahi #oldpunjab #sikhart

The wonderful and talented Malinda Kaur @malindakaur will be a guest speaker at my artist talk on Saturday 1st June at 2pm at @orleanshousegallery I’m really looking forward to hearing about her films, stories and experience. Please do come along, free event. Malinda Kaur is a British Sikh filmmaker from Bradford, whose work centres around diverse stories that rarely get told. She has made several Bafta accredited short films focusing on the complexity and emotional strain on today’s south asian females in modern Britain. Malinda looks at ancestral baggage, tradition and culture and the struggle to change when it is embedded and entwined within history. Her most recent short F.O.G (starring Kiran Sonia Sawar & Adeel Akhtar) is a BBC Film funded project that looks at a nuanced portrayal of a south Asian mother-daughter relationship. It draws upon a mother’s expectations of a dutiful daughter and explores family obligation and associated guilt that comes with it. It won best Yorkshire Short at Leeds Film Festival 2023 and will be screening at more festivals this year. Images : stills from F.O.G #artisttalk #london #southasianwomen #film

#MentalHealtjAwarenessWeek 📌Where did you learn German? Or which language did you have to learn, depending on which country you moved to? "Moving to Germany with my husband was a big change. Learning German was tough, and I often felt homesick and lonely. But I joined helpful Deutsch classes at the local Volkshochschule for people like me who are new here. They made learning easier and I met others... It was so refreshing to meet people from so many different backgrounds. Each with their own story. My tip: Try joining classes made for newcomers like us. Learn the language and meet other people going through similar things. Don't hesitate to ask for help; we're all figuring things out." #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek Do you relate to this? "As a South Asian woman in Germany, the pressure to excel professionally and maintain familial expectations weighed heavily on me. I often felt isolated and misunderstood, which exacerbated my anxiety. My turning point came when I joined a local support group for South Asian women. Sharing my struggles with those who understood my cultural background was incredibly therapeutic. My tip: Seek out community groups that resonate with your cultural identity; finding people who understand your unique challenges can be a huge relief." "P' Software engineer aged 28. #Arabiannights dinner with the sis I #love it when I go to a place and can effortlessly soak up the cultural vibe there...almost like I am on #vacation in that part of the world. #arabstreetsingapore is one of those places and I am so glad it's always bustling with goodvibes . 😊 Ending this post off with a quote that I probably have shared on this page before but still is of great importance in my life When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change .( #waynedyerquotes ) Literally just saw a man on the train I am on calling out to another who walked out to walk back into the train to get the bag he accidentally left behind. So glad that kindness and honesty still exists and is visible everywhere!💜 #wayshower #wanderlust #starseeds #travelsingapore #sgig #spilledink #lifestyle #mindbodysoul #singaporefoodie #weekendvibes #starseed #spilledink #southasianwomen #selflove #beboldbeyou #bethechangeyouwanttosee

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health concern that affects many new mothers, including those in the South Asian community. Cultural expectations and the stigma surrounding mental health can make it particularly challenging for South Asian women to seek help. 🔹 Signs & Symptoms to Watch For: - Intense worry about the baby’s health that goes beyond typical concerns. - Disturbing thoughts of harm to the baby or oneself. - A profound decrease in enjoyment, which feels like more than just new mother adjustments. - Feelings of detachment from reality, or even experiencing hallucinations. - Periods of excessive energy, followed by sudden and intense bouts of sadness. 🔹 Impact in the South Asian Community: Studies suggest that South Asian women may experience postpartum depression at higher rates than the general population, yet they are less likely to seek treatment due to cultural stigma and lack of awareness about mental health resources. 🔹 Seeking Help: It's crucial to address these symptoms early with professional help. Mental health is as important as physical health, and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. JiVA specializes in supporting this community and we are here for you. 🔹 Support & Resources: 1. Talk Therapy: Engaging with a JiVA therapist who understands cultural nuances can be beneficial. 2. Community Support Groups: Connecting with others who have similar experiences can provide comfort and reduce isolation. Look out for our webinars coming this summer. 3. Medical Consultation: Sometimes, medical treatment may be necessary, and a healthcare provider can offer guidance and management strategies. 👉Let’s break the stigma and support our mothers. And there’s more but let’s start with this 👀 Understanding the impact of family systems, collectivist culture values, gender roles on our relationship with money helps us identify WHY you’re struggling with budgeting, saving and paying off debt. We need to go deeper and explore this in a safe and non-judgemental space - as not every financial expert will be as understanding (you’ll never catch me going back to a bank to talk to an advisor there again). In episode 6 of Friday Talks: Not Bad For Some Immigrants (our last of the season!), I’m chatting with Arti Patel (@artipatel1) about the barriers to entry South Asian women face when trying to break into creative fields (think: everything from family expectations to the way these industries are actually structured), why we belong in these spaces and what it feels like to provide today’s young women with this type of support and encouragement through Didihood (@didihood). 🔗 Head to the link in bio to watch our whole conversation! These weight loss programmes don’t accommodate for us desi’s. But desi women still do them… Why? For the most part, because it’s cheap. (Only being honest) Yet it doesn’t teach you how to still eat desi food, so you can make sustainable changes. So what’s more important than a cheap programme? Value and also doing a programme sustainably! #jasminfitness #desicoach #desiwomen #uksouthasian #ukfitfam #desifitness #fitnessfordesiwomen #culturalstigmas #southasianfitness #southasianwomen

I love talking to and meeting the elders in my community. Any community. So many powerful and lovely stories, like how this resilient Tamil/Kannadiga woman met and married her husband within 6 months of meeting him while she was getting her masters in the US. A love marriage in the late 60s/early 70s was beyond uncommon. Geetha Iyengar, 77, stands at the entryway to her home at Priya Living in Santa Clara, Calif., on April 15, 2024. This Mother's Day, as we honor the resilient mothers and mother figures in our lives, we also acknowledge the silent struggles shaped by intergenerational trauma within South Asian communities. ✨It's a profound time to initiate healing and transformation rooted in cultural understanding and compassion. 👉Culturally Specific Tips for Healing Intergenerational Trauma: 🔸Acknowledge Cultural Stigma: In many South Asian families, discussing mental health issues and emotional vulnerabilities is often taboo. Start by gently opening up conversations around mental health, using language that respects but challenges these cultural norms. 🔸Celebrate and Critique Cultural Narratives: Reflect on the narratives that have been passed down through generations. While many stories carry wisdom and values, others might perpetuate harmful stereotypes or expectations. Discuss these aspects with family members to foster a broader perspective. 🔸Integrate Cultural Practices: Embrace and incorporate healing practices that resonate with our cultural heritage, such as yoga, meditation, or Ayurveda. These can be powerful tools in managing stress and emotional well-being, serving as bridges between generations. 🔸Encourage Intergenerational Dialogue: Create opportunities for stories and experiences to be shared between older and younger generations. This can help younger family members understand historical and cultural contexts, while also allowing older generations to see the shifts in societal attitudes and norms. 🔸Utilize Community Resources: Leverage community resources that cater specifically to the needs of South Asians like JiVA Mental Health. We are here for you! ✨This Mother's Day, let us embrace the journey of healing with empathy and understanding, honoring our mothers by breaking the cycles of trauma, and paving the way for a healthier, more aware future. #MothersDay #SouthAsianMentalHealth #HealingJourney #CulturalHealing #BreakTheCycle #southasianrelationships #southasianwomen #SouthAsianStrength #srilankangirl #SareeNotSorry #southasianamerican #southasianstigma #brownmentalhealth #browntherapy #browntherapistnetwork #SouthAsianCommunity #southasiantherapy #ji

💞 My Inspiration — My mom! Our careers & lives are very different, coz she didn’t have a choice. It’s because of her sacrifices (which she never once made us feel like it was a sacrifice) I’m able to do what I do today. She’s a first-gen immigrant who raised my sister & I on her own in The Netherlands, a country where she had NO ONE. A single mom from when I was 4; sis was 6. AND she even took care of her mom. Raised us with very strong Indian values. Making sure we didn’t just learn to speak Hindi, but also read, write & cook Indian food. Friday night was movie night at home. We’d watch whatever latest Indian movie was out and available. She worked as a receptionist for close to 40 years. We didn't take yearly holidays. Instead, she got us through private, international schooling + invested in real estate, whilst in.this.one.job. But, even though she was close to completing her bachelors she didn’t get to sit her final exams, coz my granddad had to move countries for his job. Women were not supposed to work, so their studies weren’t seen as important. Just a pass-time till you got married. She made sure we did - my sis became a doctor & I did my masters in business. Because of his job she has lived, apart from India, in Australia, Syria, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan & Holland as the final destination. She still understands basic Farsi & Arabic (why I have such a soft corner for these languages & culture). She’s a cancer survivor & ongoing fighter. I’m super aware that every extra year we have with her is special. A bonus. She worked full-time to raise us. Yet, I ALWAYS felt she was there. Before the era of mobiles, the home phone would ring exactly 5 minutes after we reached home from school. Then continue to do so every hour till she left work. Today, she’s still the backbone of our family, always helping everyone out. Never asking for anything in return (maybe even taken for granted). She’s the all-time favourite of my girls. They’ll leave me for her. I’m proud to say that.😃 If I do even half of what she did for us, for my girls, I’ll feel like I have done a good job. 🥰 Happy Mother’s day Mumma. Love you to the moon, back & sooo much more.
