As a creativity practice, I made some watercolor splotches on ATCs and turned them into creatures. I made so many, but this was so ridiculously difficult for me that these are the only three I feel ok enough about to post. I'll be creating a swap to send them out soon hopefully. Life got so messy just out of high school that I completely stopped taking the time to make anything artistic for over a decade, and it's felt since I picked it up again, that I'm learning from scratch. Living in a dissociative state for nearly my entire life has made climbing out of it feel like traversing an endless mountain, but I know it's not really endless, and I'll find something new and beautiful on the other side. The young Splotchafish was afraid to swim the entire length of the pond until she befriended a trio of koi fish, who reminded her of the nearby lotus flowers. They told her how the flowers had to grow through the mud and the muck at the bottom of the pond before having the strength and the will to surface at the top and share their beauty in full bloom. First we used droppers to add liquid watercolor to our paper, then we tilted and shook our papers to move the paint around the page. After adding a few colors and layers, we used our imaginations to think about what we saw in the paint markings. Monsters? Dragons? Faces? Animals? Mermaids? In a recent post, I mistakenly thought a Splotch Monster named Dewey was the first one that @krisloyaart and I worked on for the Stop and Smell the Flower series, and while he was one of the first, it was this guy, Harold, who actually started it all. Kris, who wrote the stories, most of which were spontaneous and unedited, saw how Harold was chasing a butterfly, with what looks like a somewhat worried and anxious expression on his face. She decided that he really wanted to fly like the butterfly, but he overlooked the fact that he was the “fastest runner on Splotch Monster Island”. I loved how she was able to derive this from the image and made it very much relatable to how we, as people, tend to think as well, oftentimes comparing ourselves to others while overlooking our own individual and unique endearing qualities. Kris also painted all the flowers and plant-life in each image, and when I jokingly asked why Harold had a big pink flower on his butt, she shrugged and said, “I don’t know, it just looks good”. You’re looking at the calm before the storm. Yesterday, after work, on a semi-rainy northern Virginia evening I stopped by @king.street.coffee to install work for the May Flowers exhibit. Only a couple of folks sitting at a corner table, finishing their coffee, curious about the art I was hanging, asked me a few questions about how it was made, etc, before leaving. Today, thousands of people will be descending upon the historic town of Leesburg for the big, annual Flower and Garden Festival, and this place will be jumping. The timing, however, could not be more ideal, and having this small but mighty little show is like a sort of homecoming for me, and of course, the Splotch Monsters, who are so happy to be back after first invading this space over a dozen years ago. No rest for the wicked, apparently. While this will be a little show, its significance is huge. Kris and I were the first two artists to exhibit at @king.street.coffee when it first opened thirteen years ago. We used to frequent the place when it was called the Coffee Bean, and always thought they should show art there. One day, when driving back from a vineyard, we saw the place being renovated, so we stopped in to get a look. The place’s then, new owner, Kimberly said they were almost ready to reopen, but she was looking for artists to display their work there. We told her that she was looking right at them! While attending a friend’s opening exhibit last December, I was asked if I would want to show there again, and the answer was a no-brainer. The work will be going up this evening in time for the big Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival, and hopefully I’ll see folks at the opening next first Friday, 5/3, from 6-8pm. Here’s another one from the Stop and Smell the Flowers collaboration with @krisloyaart, and a fan favorite, so much so that I can never not sell out of prints of this one. I actually participated in an artisan’s market at the NAEA conference last week, but didn’t have the time or opportunity to grab a single picture. I was glad to sell out of all the books I brought, which meant a lot less luggage to haul back. It also meant that me and Kris’ story of our artistic journey made it into the hands and hearts of more people from more places, which is very much a good thing. Dewey was one of the first Splotch Monsters born out of the Stop and Smell the Flowers series of collaborative works between @krisloyaart and I, made at the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Kris wanted to cheer people up who were stuck at home, and bring a smile to the faces of people who were worried or nervous about what was going on at the time. Right away she started offering free online workshops and open studio sessions, and got me to do a few as well. It was Kris’ selfless and loving nature that spurred on the creation of Dewy, and twenty other 5” x 7” pieces that ended up getting sold (at the request of the public), and adopted into the homes of folks far and wide. She even made little certificates of adoption to accompany each one, which was a brilliant idea. Another series I made to shake up my creative process, was numbers - Splotch Numbers, to be precise. All of them were made using a base of India ink, and later drawing over them with black felt markers, Sakura Pigma Micron pens, and my not-so-secret secret weapon, white Jelly Roll pens. The number twenty-two was one of the more successful of the bunch, and a personal favorite. I never really exhibited or did anything with the series, after making them, until including this one in the recent solo exhibit at @beachkraftgallery. To my pleasant surprise, Twenty-two SOLD to a young fan, who also happens to be one of my wonderful students! There will be a closing reception for the show on Saturday, March 30th, from 5-7pm. When creating Splotch Monsters, it can be a fun challenge to sometimes switch things up a little, and try some different approaches. This one is from a series I made on 6” x 4” postcard-sized paper, where I made the paint splotches touch at least one edge of the paper. I decided on making faces out of them, and focus primarily on facial expressions. This monster is clearly not amused to have woken up to a couple of osprey who decided to nest on his head, but eventually he came around to having them as company. I personally love osprey (or sea hawks), which are fairly common in local areas with large bodies of water. Their nests are a sight to behold, and watching them glide across the surface of the water to catch fish is some of the best entertainment around. Imagine a world where greed and personal gain took a backseat to helping those who could use a hand. Imagine a world where we attempted to examine the viewpoints of others through their own personal lens, and respected our differences as part of the richness that is humanity, while recognizing and celebrating what we’ve got in common. Imagine a world where civil discourse and debate replaced violence and hate. It’s not always easy, and oftentimes requires work, and the way things have been going lately (and for so long, now), it can seem futile, impossible, and naive, even. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless, but it’s the small things - the littlest gestures and acts of kindness that ultimately add up - that’s where peace begins. It’s not too late. I decided to show a few selections from the Endangered Kingdom Meets Splotch Monster Island series at the @beachkraftgallery exhibit, including the Hawksbill Sea Turtle. I worked on this series alongside a weekly portrait I’d draw of an an endangered animal for an entire year, as I was curious to see what it might look like if Splotch Monsters and real animals from Earth somehow met in an alternate universe, or something like that. If anything, it was a fun creative experiment that challenged me as an artist and expanded my visual vocabulary (and brought some attention to endangered animal species!). For the portraits, designing a crown for each animal (see second image), originated from a lesson plan I do with my fourth grade students in art class, where they can choose from a variety of endangered animal species, depict them in portraiture style, and design a crown that visually conveys the animal’s natural habitat, physical characteristics, or both. One thing I haven’t done yet is post some of my new Splotch Monsters, as still images. I’ve shared the process through time lapse, and as fun as it is, I’ve got mixed feelings about it because it almost seems to cheapen the process, reducing what can take an hour or two or three, down to a minute. That said, it also gives a quick glimpse into how a piece is made. So, I’ll start with one of my favorites, the Cherry Blossom Beast. For these new ones I’ve been using Kuretake GANSAI TAMBI Japanese watercolors, which I love. They’re so vivid and easy to use, and I’m thinking this will be my go-to brand for the time being. I recently got my larger Splotch Monster works professionally photographed, including the Illuminated Light Dragon triptych, and thought I’d post it here. Before I forget, I must give credit to my good friend @emscottart, who initially suggested I do something Splotch Dragon-themed. He’s very much what we refer to as an “artistic accomplice”, and spent nearly an entire Saturday at my home, working on some of his own art with me, as I laid down the foundation for these larger works. It’s amazing how a good friend’s presence can be hugely beneficial and inspiring. Endangered Kingdom meets Splotch Monster Island series, 34: Grand Cayman’s Blue Iguana. This, and a handful of others from the Splotch Monster series I made featuring endangered animals, will be shown alongside an array of other types of Splotch Monsters as part of a solo show at @beachkraftgallery, during the first weekend in March. We’re still working out whether or not it’s happening on Saturday or Sunday, but as soon as I get the details, I’ll be sure to spread the word.
