The reason I started painting abstract art? It was a freeing way for me to express myself during the pandemic, and one of the only things left that had 'no rules' to it! 😍 I'm a self taught artist that picked up a paintbrush for the first time at the end of 2020. Sometimes we want to escape from life. A place that doesn’t feel like our everyday life. We need comfort, rest, peace. We daydream of where we want to go and what it’ll feel like. We imagine that sense of ease and freedom. These landscapes that show up in my work from time to time seem to be where my mind is going for rest. They’re never planned. I've started to make plans and take action towards using 3D materials this year as I've wanted to explore sculpture and installation for so long! Today, I've been a full-time artist for 3 years and a part-time artist for 17 years. That's 20 years of making stuff since graduating from the MA Fine Art course @nottinghamtrentuni What have I learnt? 🏵In the beginning, say yes to everything 🏵Always expect to get paid 🏵Taking risks in the studio feels like play 🏵Doors are meant to be walked through not to keep people out 🏵Natural light in a studio is the best 🏵Don't force yourself to know the answer in one sitting 🏵The birds are routing for you 🏵Remember why you started 🏵Get lost in the zone where you don't need to eat or wee 🏵New hard things can be stepping stones to something better 🏵Other people can sometimes translate your ideas into reality better and quicker than you. Let them, credit them and then pay them. 🏵If you get stuck and frustrated, walk away and do something else 🏵The excitement of learning how another artist has made something (and it not being as impossible as you first thought) 🏵If you don't sell at art fairs or exhibitions, it doesn't mean your work is shit.
