Do you have a paragraph (or a whole scene) that doesnโt need to be there? Have you told yourself that itโs there to create atmosphere? To develop the characters? To establish the world of the story? Ask yourself this: does your reader need it or even want it? Maybe they donโt. Is it really there because you fell in love with your own power with words? Are you emotionally attached to this part of your story even though it does nothing for your readerโs experience? The way to improve your novel on a developmental scale is often to โkill your darlingsโ. Get rid of that backstory that isnโt needed. Conflate background or supporting characters into a single character when thatโs simpler. Lose that massive chunk of writing about what your character looks like and what they do in every situation in their day. It can be hard to lose part of a story that you love. So, there's every possibility I'm a little bit obsessed with this idea? I started it last Thursday, it is now Tuesday evening for me and I'm done writing for the night. That's a little over 6500 words a day on average, except about three of those days have been 9000 plus, and the other 10000 is the in-between stuff I'd say it's going well? I have so many ideas and no idea how to put them in in a way that will do them justice but I'm absolutely loving having a specific playlist for it because it means I get so much written and so much put together and so many ideas? I just need to add more songs to it because right now it's less than an hour long which is bad, because I tend to write for longer than that. My issue with writing is the sitting down for it. The moving away from whatever I'm doing and going over to where I'm set up to start writing, picking the best song to start with knowing it's only going to randomise from there, and then the first few words. After that? I have been writing since I was very young, and I have been typing up my books since I was first given access to a computer. I type very, very fast, and as long as I can get into the flow of writing? I can write a lot in one sitting. It's important to remember that Every Word Is Progress and you should celebrate that! If your monthly goal is 1000 words a day, don't be discouraged when you write 500 words one day instead. You still moved forward with your book, and that's important to recognize. Definitely celebrate if you reach your monthly goals or whenever you finish a big milestone, like a complete draft (that's amazing), but if you don't meet your goals, celebrate that you tried, that you managed to write X amount of words or that you wrote every day, even if it was just one word. Fun fact: I used to draw and paint when I was little. For this first novel I have been thinking if I should include a drawing per chapter. A decision yet to make as it takes time to draw something meaningful for each chapter. This flower was a bit simple, so it only took me about an hour. (NOT part of this novel). My plan was to draw something important to symbolize the uniqueness of every chapter. On the other hand, the final version might be without any drawings to leave it open for interpretation. By doing this, the readers will have to use their own imagination. Most likely it will end without images, so read carefully and open your mind. To the writer, what does it mean to pause? If you're a storyteller like me, then you know a pause doesn't only follow punctuation; it will happen whether you've planned, plotted, or otherwise. I mean, of course, a life pause. A few days ago, I published a workbook as a token of gratitude for my email and Substack subscribers. It's called "Fill Your Cup: Focus on YOU." In it, I share an activity called "Gifts of the Magi, " during which I encourage using The Magician card and asking questions around the needs of your heart, body, mind, and spirit. My heart, body, mind, and spirit have needed rest... and I mean more than a nap. I've needed to take some time off for a while. I always schedule an extended break in the winter - from social media, Substack, and email - and that time is lucrative for my creativity and my mental health. After returning in February and shifting into a high-gear marketing plan for my new book and deck, I've been wide-open, running on all cylinders, and enjoying a multitude of new connections while also chipping away at my goals for my new fiction series. Writers: Running full-steam will eventually empty your cup. And if you don't schedule small pauses every now and then to refill and reframe, your heart, body, mind, and spirit will do it for you. This weekend, my family and I had planned on a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains. An unexpected back injury kept my Uncle and Aunt at home, so it's just Shederal and me up here in these mountains... and having the time of our lives. There's power in the pause. Whether that looks like a day of doing nothing but lying on the couch and binging BRIDGERTON, or escaping to a cabin with your sweetheart, pausing is necessary for refilling your cup. Consider this post a sign that you need to pause and focus on YOU. Refill your cup. If you don't take care of YOU, your creativity will suffer.
