Look who's all finished! Except not really, she's just drivable now. Teething issues came with the hood (which is Montego blue, don't look too closely) not lining up correctly, which required new hinges, an uncooperative coolant hose, and some unhappy coil packs. And what a fun car to drive...the car is just about everything I expected. She, and Miss Dorothy and Christine, are now lined up and ready for post rebuild inspection. Fuck it, appreciation post for the BMW 1 series. The E8x BMW 1 Series is one of the cars I have recommended the most throughout the years to people who want something sporty but practical. I'm sorry, but I don't think this can be beat. The 1 Series is such an incredible value for money that you can't help but appreciate it. And they come in so many different flavours! Hatchback (3 and 5 door), coupe, convertible...you can have it with a manual or automatic, and a variety of different engines. In North America, we only got the E82 2 door coupe, which is fine. You can import the hatches now, and I have seen a few arrive on Canadian shores from Japan. You'll mostly find them here in three flavours; 128i, 135i, and 1M. For me, I tend to recommend the 128i to people. I think the BMW driving experience is best summed up by a naturally aspirated straight six and a manual transmission. If you want more power (and potentially more headaches), go ahead and get the 135i...but never buy a cheap example. And the 1M is a different beast entirely (I've only ever sat in one, but mannnnn...). I love, love, love the 1 Series, so much so that I would happily buy one tomorrow with no regrets. It's the perfect car that would get me out of my old car buying habits. I'd find myself a nice 128i coupe with a manual, put on an exhaust so I could hear that lovely N52 3L inline six, and go from there. I love how dorky and upright they look, and how small (relatively speaking) they are. It's the true successor to the BMW E30. Maybe that's why I'm so drawn to it, as a former E30 owner. A few from the 128 teardown last week. The damaged hood, radiator, core support and air box came out, along with the nasty ass headlights that contained at least a few gallons of water. The new radiator and core support went on that evening, and in the time since, the car has gotten a new valve cover gasket. The new used headlights in the last image are apparently missing the crucial tabs they need to actually stay attached to the front end, so now we need... a different set.
