I feel compelled to share this & bring awareness! 🧡 Through the fabulous art community, I was led to the #215shoes project led by @hilaryamoses & @artsiobhan. The goal is to gather 215 drawings or paintings of children shoes to remember the #indigenous lives lost. 🧡 The Indian Residential School Survivor Society (IRSSS) is a provincial organization with a twenty-year history of providing services to Indian Residential School Survivors. (www.IRSSS.com) 🧡 #215pairsofshoes represents the number of remains of #IndigenousChildren found on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on Tk’emlups te Secwépemc First Nation in Kamloops, B.C. 🧡 These Indian residential boarding homes began in 1879. The last one closed in 1996. DID YOU READ THAT?! 1996!! 😳🤯 This isn’t the ancient past y’all! Insane. ➡️ Are you still with me here? I know it’s a long post🙏, but seriously guys, I’m sad and disappointed that I was never made aware of this until recently. Awareness NEEDS to be spread. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡 ❓What were residential school? (Valid question and I’m ashamed to say I didn’t know until recently, so here’s the info:) * Between 1831 and 1996, thousands of First Nations, Inuit and Métis children were taken from their communities and forced to go to boarding schools across Canada called residential schools. * The schools were funded by the Canadian government and run by Christian churches or provincial governments. * The schools attempted to strip children of their Indigenous culture. * They were not allowed to speak their own languages or practise their traditions. On the eve of #nationaldayoftruthandreconciliation the courts of Canada upheld the human rights complaint instigated 14years ago by Gitxsan activist @kstockcindy762d Cindy Blackstock. With 52% of children in the foster care system in Canada being of Indigenous descent the practice of removing Indigenous children from their families is still with us. Many refer to it as the Millennial Scoop. The ongoing discrimination of Indigenous children needs to end.Marking this day officially is a small step. Les is a photographer and has grown up in Fort Providence NWT where he spent a lot of time with his camera. They were worn as you can see and I assume the ancient woman offering them for sale had no more grandchildren that needed them. I handed them off to a young couple with two small children from Fort Providence that will undoubtedly wear them until they no longer fit. One of the keys is the disclosure of the institutional records. These records would reveal medical histories, deaths, injuries and the western names that would have been forced on the children. As Raymond Frogner head of archives of the #NCTR states it - They are the documents of lives lost and provid more proof of what occurred. We have seen what the discovery of #unmarkedburials has done. While the church has been slow with this the Federal Government has tried to prevent the creation of digital statistical reports. Stunning shoe contribution from @j.klassen.artspot These are painted on 12"x12" canvas with acrylic and gold leaf.👏 The death rate of children at residential institutions was so high that the officials asked for the government to create day schools. The initiative failed due the the lack of support of the Catholic Church. The Church ran 60 % of these institutions which operated for more than a century. Despite their commitments of $25 million as part of their settlement to the survivors they have only paid $3.7 million. The net assets of the Catholic Church in 2019 is $4.1 billion. One in every $20 donated to charities goes to the Catholic Church. WHY ORANGE? Orange Shirt Day was established in 2013. It was inspired by Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation author Phyllis Jack Webstad. A residential institution survivor Phyllis shared her story of her first day. She was six and was stripped of all her clothes including the orange shirt her grandmother gave her. Another 182 unmarked graves were discovered on traditional First Nation territory near a former residential school in BC’s interior. These 182 souls are suspected to be part of the Ktunaxa Nation. The number keeps growing (215 in Kamloops & 715 in Saskatchewan) and it marks a dark chapter in Canada’s history ⚫️ Native kids were separated from their parents, forced to cut their hair, wear western clothes and forbidden to speak their own language, not to mention be subjected to all sorts of other abuse 💔 The Vatican & Catholic Church need to step up & release the records they have associated with these schools. 182 unmarked graves have been discovered on the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation at the site of the St. Eugene's Residential School. It was run by the Catholic Church from 1912 to the early 1970' . These 182 souls are believed to be members of the Ktunaxa Nation. The #NCTR was gifted the spirit name bezhig miigwan which in the language of the Anishinaabe people means "one feather". The name is a reminder that every Survivor needs to be shown the same respect and attention that an eagle feather deserves. I was pondering a painting worthy of honouring the children taken from their homes/families and of those, the many so tragically abused and/or killed in residential schools as well as all those who continue to be hurt by the actions taken. 💔 I came across a challenge on @carrie_is_artsy and started by @hilaryamoses and @artsiobhan (thank you to each of them) encouraging donations to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and working to collect #215 drawings/paintings of orange children’s shoes. I painted these shoes, reminiscent of shoes I was blessed to wear as a child - mine were red. Please donate, if you are able, to the suggested North Vancouver organization and/or one closer to home like Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre. Please take a moment this #nationalindigenouspeoplesday to consider the systemic oppression, inequalities and discrimination from which indigenous people continue to suffer. It’s been hard not to think about the discovery of the mass grave since it hit the news. I sent my kids off to school and welcomed them home at the end of each day. I didn’t realize what a privilege that was … I chose to draw the “motorcycle“ boots I found on consignment at Beansprouts on Main.
