Some early PA history! The Moon-Williams log house in Historic Fallsington, Bucks County. The oldest portion (in pics 1+2) was built in 1767 and the “newer” portion (pic 3) built in 1780. It was the home of Samuel Moon in the late 1700s and early 1800s - he was a carpenter skilled in making Windsor chairs. Apparently there are many Windsor chairs by Samuel Moon in regional museums, including Winterthur in Delaware. Check out that 250 plus year old joinery in pic 4!! At 11th and Nedro we find this train signal tower at the Fern Rock Transportation Center. The Broad Street Line opened in 1928, so I imagine this tower was built in the 20s. Originally the northern end of the BSL was Olney, while Fern Rock served as a maintenance facility and storage yard. In 1956 subway passenger service was added here and Fern Rock became the new northern end of the BSL. The tower was named in honor of John LaForce in 2013 - he had died in 2012 after 58 years (!!) in Philly transit. He began working as a streetcar operator for the former Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC) in January 1954. Over the years, he moved up through the ranks at PTC and SEPTA, holding positions as a bus, subway, and trolley operator, signals specialist, chief engineer of power, and deputy chief engineering officer. I love how even a utilitarian structure like a signal tower was built with beauty! According to the website, Joe’s began in 1949 when the original owner Samuel “Chink” Sherman opened a steak shop in NE Philly that originally sold only steak sandwiches with or without onions. Philadelphia was once known as “The Workshop of the World” for its diverse industries like textiles, shipbuilding, railroad car/engine manufacturing, hat making (think Stetson), printing and publishing, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, machine tools and hardware. In Olney (6th and Tabor) we see one remnant - the Proctor & Schwartz Electric Company. This was built in 1920, but the company had roots in the Philadelphia Textile Machinery Company, which was founded in the 1880s (see pic 5 that shows the dates of 1883 to 1922). Proctor & Schwartz merged with the Silex Company in the 1960s, to form Proctor Silex, a home electronics company still thriving today (toasters, coffee makers, etc.). Ladder 16 firehouse in Port Richmond is a Beaux Arts beauty! According to the Fireman’s Hall Museum, Truck (now Ladder) 16 was organized in 1912 in a new 2-bay station on the northeast corner of Belgrade and Huntingdon Streets. It was one of two truck companies in the city to receive the first motorized apparatus in 1913, a gasoline/electric tractor with an 85 foot wooden aerial ladder operated by a crew of 12 (see pic 5 for a screenshot of a photo from the Firemen’s Museum website). I am loving the sculptural entablature (roofline - architrave, frieze, cornice), the balustrade on the roof, and those lion heads!
