Unzip your mind for national zipper day. A couple days ago was national zipper day, whatever that is. So to pay our respects, letโs celebrate Zipperhead for a minute. A beloved punk clothing store from 1981 to 2005, their iconic logo was restored by Sky Neon. It can still be seen inside the original space at 407 South St.โwhich is now a sort of community center and South Street Museum. Therein are earthy photos from pushcarts to punk. The neon job was originally bent by Carol Falone, a benderโs Bender, who came from a family of tubebenders. She looked at the zipper pattern, specifying 12 mil coated ruby and said this should not be done in Neon. But she bent it anyway. There was lots of spacey Neon at Zipperhead, but even funkier were the giant ants on the facade of the building. They looked like monsters from a Tokyo comic book sent here to eat South Street. if you got through this much of the rap, then you deserve to be rewarded (penalized?) by this philosophic part of the rap: If you learn to unzip your head, you can 1. Located in a less traveled area of Valley Forge National Park, the imposingย stone Weatherill Barn was built in 1826 and doubled in size in 1845 (see all 3 photos). The massive barn sits on land known as Walnut Hill, a large parcel owned by the Pawling family in the 1700's and then the Wetherill family in the 1800's. At 11th and Nedro we find this train signal tower at the Fern Rock Transportation Center. The Broad Street Line opened in 1928, so I imagine this tower was built in the 20s. Originally the northern end of the BSL was Olney, while Fern Rock served as a maintenance facility and storage yard. In 1956 subway passenger service was added here and Fern Rock became the new northern end of the BSL. The tower was named in honor of John LaForce in 2013 - he had died in 2012 after 58 years (!!) in Philly transit. He began working as a streetcar operator for the former Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC) in January 1954. Over the years, he moved up through the ranks at PTC and SEPTA, holding positions as a bus, subway, and trolley operator, signals specialist, chief engineer of power, and deputy chief engineering officer. I love how even a utilitarian structure like a signal tower was built with beauty!
