Joe’s Steaks at Frankford and Girard giving off appropriately mid century vibes with its orange and aqua color scheme! The colors and the typeface are reminiscent of Howard Johnson’s to me - what do you think? According to the website, Joe’s began in 1949 when the original owner Samuel “Chink” Sherman opened a steak shop in NE Philly that originally sold only steak sandwiches with or without onions. After the death of the original owner, Joe Groh (who’d worked in the shop since he was a teen) bought the business in 1999. Philadelphia was once known as “The Workshop of the World” for its diverse industries like textiles, shipbuilding, railroad car/engine manufacturing, hat making (think Stetson), printing and publishing, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, machine tools and hardware. In Olney (6th and Tabor) we see one remnant - the Proctor & Schwartz Electric Company. This was built in 1920, but the company had roots in the Philadelphia Textile Machinery Company, which was founded in the 1880s (see pic 5 that shows the dates of 1883 to 1922). Proctor & Schwartz merged with the Silex Company in the 1960s, to form Proctor Silex, a home electronics company still thriving today (toasters, coffee makers, etc.). Ladder 16 firehouse in Port Richmond is a Beaux Arts beauty! According to the Fireman’s Hall Museum, Truck (now Ladder) 16 was organized in 1912 in a new 2-bay station on the northeast corner of Belgrade and Huntingdon Streets. It was one of two truck companies in the city to receive the first motorized apparatus in 1913, a gasoline/electric tractor with an 85 foot wooden aerial ladder operated by a crew of 12 (see pic 5 for a screenshot of a photo from the Firemen’s Museum website). I am loving the sculptural entablature (roofline - architrave, frieze, cornice), the balustrade on the roof, and those lion heads! Lovely carving in a marble lintel on a house in Powelton Village (this is at 3800 Spring Garden Street). The house is a contributing property in the Powelton Village Historic District and thanks to the PV Civic Association historic map, I can tell you the house was built in 1878 and was originally occupied by John Kelly, a widowed roofer born in Ireland, and his six children. Glorious Kensington National Bank has been presiding over the intersection of Girard and Frankford (I’d incorrectly identified the street earlier - this is an edit to correct that) in Fishtown/Kensington for almost 150 years! Built in 1877 in what I believe is granite, designed by Frank Furness. If a building can be muscular yet also delicate, this is it - solid, hefty details (see pics 3 and 4), with delicate ornamentation and lettering on the engraved sign (see pic 2). There was a HABS (Historic American Building Survey) done on this building in the 1970s (PA-1773) with photos by Jack Boucher (I see his name on so many HABS reports!). Pretty brick house with a *very* fancy bonnet in Fishtown (Jefferson Street just west of Frankford) - see pic 2 for a view of the cornice and be prepared to rotate your phone. It’s tempting to think this is a row that has lost its neighbors, but looking at historic maps at the Phila Geohistory website revealed that - while there was no house at all here in 1875 or 1895 - in 1910 we see this house on its own on the corner. The former Diamond Theater on Germantown Avenue (2119, close to the intersection with Diamond Street) shows its history if you look closely enough! The Irvin R. Glazer 1986 book “Philadelphia Theaters, A-Z” says that the theatre opened in 1920 as the Cohooksink with 630 seats and was designed for silent films. It re-opened as the Diamond Theatre in 1923 and the brick and terra cotta front to the theatre was topped with a large pediment which contained a wedding cake type sculpture. A fanciful electric sign featuring a swirling bulb diamond shape topped the electric signboard, all flat against the building. The theater was renovated in 1928 and 1937, adding a marquee designed by David Supowitz. There’s a smaller 1994 collection by Glazer about Philly Theaters, with photos (“Philadelphia Theaters: A Pictorial Architectural History”, done in conjunction with the @philaathenaeum). I have a copy of this as well, and you can see pics 5 and 6 for my photos of photos from that book. They are from 1937, and the entry in the book states, “The wide cove-lit interior of the Diamond shown in this photo [pic 6] still displays evidence of the silent era: the ubiquitous artificial-flower baskets, illuminated clock and theater pipe organ—all anachronisms in 1937.” I am sure that 80 and 100 years ago, theaters like this were amazing wonders to behold, with their ornamentation and incredible lights!
