Every year we have six months (October 1 - March 31) to prune Elm trees. Pruning in the dormant season reduces the risk of attracting Elm bark beetles which can carry the fungus known to cause Dutch Elm disease. Warm weather has arrived in Southern Alberta which has plenty of gardeners itching to get outside to prepare for spring blooms! It's best to wait for consistently warm temperatures of 10 degrees before you start cleaning out the garden. Leave plant materials intact to insulate perennial crowns and protect overwintering insects. Here are some things you can do while you wait for warmer temps; 1. Pick up garbage that has blown into your yard. 2. Put away any holiday decorations that were frozen to the ground. 3. Pick up animal and pet scat in your yard. 4. Clean up and remove plants that were damaged or browsed on by rodents or deer. 5. Cut down any overgrown shrubs to allow them to rejuvenate (re-grow) this season. 6. Clean out flower pots from last year. 7. Organize the garden shed. 8. Start select seeds indoors for a jump on the growing season. 9. Review your garden journal, if you have one, to determine your previous successes and failures. 10.
